For some of us we will buy what we need when we want to or when we can, whether it’s a bit of paint color for the walls or something else to refresh the place. That makes us lucky because we can all basically buy anything including our best mattress at any time. However, who’d have thought that buying a new mattress can be best at a certain time of year? Whether it’s the sales, a good time to buy ‘last season’, or looking out for overstock or closing down sales then you can find a deal as long as you have the patience.
We came up with a little bit of advice from Unclutterer so that you can find the best mattress at the best time of year that has the most impact – mainly on the price you pay for that perfect mattress.
So if the time of year you buy something for your home has a significant impact, then the time they go on sale gives you a huge advantage if you want to save a fair few dollars – but only if you can wait until the time!
Here are some ways to save when you’re considering buying your new mattress. We’ll walk you through a few important things that should help you save money so you have spare to spend on the other important things.
So, let’s take a look at buying your next best mattress at the best time to save you dollars but not compromise on the quality mattress you really want.
Retail vs Online
Online
Buying online is a popular choice and the biggest way for the majority of manufacturers to get an over on their competition. It gives them an online platform and a prominent presence to ensure that they are closer to their customer. This is the same for the smaller mattress manufacturers as well as the larger ones – there is competition everywhere and they all want your business.
Largely, they know that you are less likely to move mountains and travel miles away to first view and then collect your mattress from in-store.
Online buying means that you get the perks of getting a mattress directly from a retailer or manufacturer, without going to the hassle and effort of shopping instore. Plus arranging collection afterwards. The online manufacturer gets your attention much faster than if you were travelling around the local specialist stores – everyones at an advantage.
And, there’s more. By cutting down the competition and the need for high cost property rental related to having a large, inviting showroom, prices online are generally thought to be lower than buying from the high street.
When you look at it, the manufacturer captures a much wider audience than if they depended solely on a bricks and mortar showroom. This gives them the opportunity to keep the price you pay for your new mattress lower.
Significantly, you can order online and have your new mattress delivered to your doorstep.
Let’s put it this way, you are less likely to travel to another city to visit a store and much more likely to look online first then place an order.

In-Store
The old school way of shopping is the preferred option for many of us. Whether you are looking to feel the sensation of your best memory foam mattress when you lay on it, or how it compares with others, buying in the retail shopping environment gives you a great experience. It’s that simple – you can try before you buy.
Typically though, having a retail property to exhibit beds and mattresses is costly. As is paying the training fees and the salaries of the staff who show you around the store. Generally the extra costs are passed down to the consumer – you. So although buying a mattress this way is a great shopping experience, buying online can mean lower pricing. It’s good that you get to feel the sensation of a variety of best latex mattresses or find your next best firm mattress but making the purchase online can save you money. It really is that simple.
What Does a New Mattress Cost?
There are so many different types of mattresses that this one is almost impossible to answer. The real thing to look at is a breakdown on those types of mattresses and know their quality and price range. So here let’s try and split it up a bit:
- Latex Mattresses
Some of the best latex mattresses are the most expensive if we’re to break down types. They are considered a luxury item because of the way they are designed, constructed, and the materials used. To provide you with a quick idea, you could look at an average of around $1,700 potentially starting at $800 and rising to $5k plus.
- Innerspring Mattresses
You won’t find the best customizable mattress containing coils for less than $400, and who would want to compromise on quality? If you’re looking at a traditional and supportive innerspring mattress then your price range will be up to approximately $2,000. This is a great mid-range price to look out for.
- Memory Foam Mattresses
Despite the popularity of memory foam and the idea that it has actually become much cheaper over the years, some of the best memory foam mattresses can attract $4,000 and more. Thankfully the average price is around $1,000 and it’s easy to pick up a new mattress from $300.
Don’t forget though, the prices above are typical retail prices. If you can wait for a new mattress then you might find the ideal mattress with discount offers. If you read our guide below then you might find a few tips on buying to save….
May Really Can Be the Best Time To Buy
We digress. The real reason for this article is for finding out the best time to buy a new mattress. Whilst buying a new mattress online may be the cheaper option, there’s another thing to consider. That is, if you can wait then you might be able to make even bigger savings.
Most customers don’t realise industry trends so here we are… the mattress industry typically rolls out new lines, or new season mattresses, in the month of June. This means that the end of April through May they are making room to introduce those new lines by selling off older stock.
It’s easy to say too that public holidays around this time, like Memorial Day, will also allow manufacturers to place healthy discounts on stock so at this one time of the year it’s a double whammy.
In reality there’s no ‘last season’ collection as far as your mattress goes – nobody else will see it or sleep on it, it’s purely for your comfort only! So if you don’t mind last season pieces then buy around May when the manufacturer is clearing out their older collections.
- American Holiday Sales
If you aren’t quite ready to buy your new mattress in May then other National holidays and the surrounding days usually offer up nice discounts. Look out for Labor Day or 4th July sales.
- Cyber Monday and Black Friday
Also after Thanksgiving is Cyber Monday and there’s the more popular Black Friday at the end of November – these are the busiest times. But, if you choose to wait until later on in the year, you’ll have to sit on your laptop and be well prepared to beat the masses to that ever-so important new mattress best buy!
- Amazon Prime Day
Especially designed for use exclusively by Amazon Prime members, Amazon Prime Day has been running since it’s first year in 2015 to celebrate its 20 year anniversary. It has remained and is a serious ONE DAY ONLY event so you have to be quick. If you can prepare for the day you might just find the best mattress for back pain or one that offers you more than just sleep – a lower priced opportunity to relieve pressure points and improve the quality of your night’s rest.
In-store Sales
- Overstock
Look out for overstock sales. You’ll find that even brick and mortar stores will advertise their sales as much as possible as they want to shift their stock (and a constant stream of profit!). So even a store that you know of will have an outlet where you can order from their website at the same price as the one discounted in store.
- Closing Down
If you are thinking of getting a new mattress anyway and happen on a closing down sale then get in there quick. These retailers need to recoup any lost revenue and clear their inventory before the business is finally shut down or they are moved to another location. These are serious sources of savings for you and you might find that best cooling mattress you’ve always wanted.
