Tips For Refreshing Old Carpets

Have your rooms lost their bright shine that was once so evident? Is everything starting to look dull and, well, old? We hate to point fingers, but it’s likely that your carpets are causing these issues.

Carpets are walked on every single day, meaning it’s only normal for them to lose their colour and become dull over time. But, while it might be tempting to rip all carpets out and start fresh, you can actually save a lot of money by giving them some tender loving care instead. Read on to discover how to make old carpets look new.

Equipment Needed

Don’t worry – you won’t need loads of tools to make your dreams of having a fluffy bright carpet a reality. Alongside a strong pair of eyes, make sure you have the following:

  • Carpet cleaner
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Rubber gloves
  • Fork (all will be revealed later…)
  • Ice cube

How To Make Your Carpets Look New

Now for the part you’ve been waiting for. The following handful of tips and tricks will be sure to bring some life back into your carpets, helping them to look brand spanking new.

1. Watch The Carpet Like A Hawk

We’re not saying that you need to set up a security system to ensure your carpet never encounters any mucky instances, but a daily check for debris will be sure to save a lot of time and effort later down the line.

As part of your everyday cleaning routine, pay close attention to your carpets, picking up any fallen debris or objects that shouldn’t be on the floor. The quicker you respond to these things, the less likely they will cause dreary-looking carpets. And, of course, keeping the space clear of clutter will make the following steps super easy for you.

2. Remember That Vacuum Cleaners Are Your Best Friend

The easiest way to keep your carpet clean is by using a vacuum cleaner as frequently as possible. Ensure that the dust bag is empty before starting and whizz the vacuum around the room, picking up all dust and debris along the way. The more often you vacuum your carpets, the less likely they will swallow up dirt (making it harder to clean further down the line).

3. Treat Your Carpet To A Deep Clean

Deep cleaning your carpet is no easy task, especially as it involves moving furniture around to ensure you get every single spot treated. However, although a time-consuming task, carpet deep-cleans are absolutely necessary if you wish to have new-looking environments.

Once your room is clear and all carpet is exposed, pop on your rubber gloves and use your carpet cleaner solution as instructed on the bottle. The majority of carpet cleaners will need to be left for a while, so make sure that you don’t desperately need the room for the rest of the day.

Whether the solution dissolves by itself or needs washing away with a damp cloth, you’ll instantly notice how much brighter your carpets look.

4. Remove Carpet Dents

It’s only normal for the furniture in your room to make dents in your carpet. But how do you get rid of these dents when the furniture is in a new position? Will you have to put up with these weird crevices forever?

You’re in luck. There are actually two proven ways to remove carpet dents, and we recommend combining both of them to get the best results.

Firstly, use a fork to hook onto the carpet fibres and gently tug upwards. These gentle movements will encourage the carpet to rise to its normal level. Do not tug too hard though, as you may risk damaging the fibres and ending up with unfixable bald patches in your carpet!

Secondly, grab an ice cube and place it in the centre of the carpet dent. When left alone to melt, the ice cube will cause the fibres in the carpet to expand, naturally resulting in an uplift. Once risen, dry the wet carpet with a cloth and it’ll be as good as new!

Never Underestimate The Power Of A Rug

If you follow the above four steps and your carpet is still giving off dull vibes, then it might be time to treat yourself to a new rug. Rugs have the power to not only add personality to a room but also cover up any stains or marks which don’t want to budge.

Rugs are also far cheaper than getting a carpet replacement, meaning you don’t have to worry about any hefty bills or DIY disasters. You may even find that a rug completes your room and gives it the aesthetic you’ve always been longing for!
