She didn’t sweep or dust; the floor was covered with garbage and the drawers were full of dirt and dead cockroaches. She left behind most of her toiletries and food. The pillows were covered with hair grease and the pillowcases were ruined. Worst of all, she had been applying nail polish at the desk, and the desktop is ruined. Rings from the bottles of nail polish and nail polish remover. Plus lots of gouges and scratches. The top will have to be refinished.

At least I have a damage deposit.

What I find interesting is that she was filthy without being a hoarder. It’s not that she couldn’t bear to throw things out, it’s just that she didn’t bother.

Still cleaning. It’s going to take a LONG time.

The word for her is slattern.

I’m so sorry, Zora. It’s horrid that you have to deal with all that filth. I’d be worried about those cockroaches. Where there are dead ones, wouldn’t there also be live ones lurking nearby?

During the time that she lived here, I had an increasing cockroach problem. Now that I’m moving furniture in her room and cleaning underneath, live roaches are running out. Ick! It looks like she spilled food on the floor and never cleaned it up.

At least the house is sprinkled with traps and baits now, so that once the food is gone (no more dirty dishes moldering in her room for a week or more) the roaches will eventually disappear. I’m constantly vigilant in the kitchen, put anything edible in a plastic bag in a small bin with a tight lid, don’t leave crumbs or spills, all food in the cupboards tightly sealed, etc.

If only I weren’t so #@%#$% poor. If I had enough money to live on without the rental income, I could afford to take my time getting a renter. I think it might be pleasant to have a roommate if she were the right person.

How revolting to have to clean up after such a disgusting slattern! It is a wonderful word Ella. I suppose the only good thing about the cleaning is that at least you have got her out of your home. There must be plenty of potential housemates who would not be so foul and would be happy to live in a clean, uncluttered environment. I feel for you Zora. Good luck in finding a kindred spirit.

+1 for good use of ‘slattern’! Zora, that’s pretty nasty and hopefully you won’t have to fumigate the entire house to get rid of the roaches.

What really amazes me are the people who are like this at WORK… you wouldn’t believe how cluttered and downright nasty some of the cubicles in my office building are. I’d hate to see where these people sleep at night.

I really do feel for you! My partner works in property lettings, so he’s seen some pretty horrific stuff, and we also have part shares in several rental properties ourselves. A while back the tenants left one of our places (a really big 2-bedroom flat in a Georgian crescent overlooking a park) in such a state that we ended up having to pay for a complete refurbishment. The carpets were unsalvageable and several rooms had hosted HEAVY smokers – the (cream) walls were coated in nicotine stains and the (white) ceiling was yellow. They also hadn’t bothered to pay the most recent utility bill, expecting us to pick it up after they left as landlords. I think they got a nasty shock when we gave the utility companies their forwarding address, and witheld their entire deposit then invoiced them for the bits of damage the deposit didn’t cover! Even so the refurb cost us several thousand pounds out of our own pockets…

It amazes me how people can live that way… one room had a massive pile of empty beer cans in one corner, there were porn DVDs piled in the kitchen, and cardboard boxes and polystyrene packing piled in another room. I won’t even attempt to describe the state of the kitchen fridge and cooker! Yuk!

Zora: what a disappointment for you! I remember the care with which you laid out your expectations to potential renters. Some general messiness is one thing — but damaging furniture and attracting cockroaches with food under the bed is quite another. I do hope that you have better luck with your next roommate.

I am just flabbergasted! I mean, it is one thing to live so slovenly but it is another to leave and not clean up after yourself. How self-centered some people are.

Paul: I have no words for the state that lovely home was left in, no words. 🙁

My husband and I own a real estate company so we are in many houses. Most people live fairly clean but the ones that don’t….wow. The worst one ever had rotting food in the fridge that smelled horrible, unflushed toilets and sheets on the beds that were absolutely filthy. I don’t know how anyone can live like this.

Sorry, Zora. Hope you can find a better renter this time.

Just looking at these stories is enough to make me queasy. Ugh. Zora, I’m so sorry to hear about the situation with your renter. At least she isn’t there anymore to make things worse! I think you should take a page out of PaulTOO’s book and send her an itemized bill for any damage that the deposit doesn’t cover.

@Zora, I hope you find a much cleaner housemate this next go-round.

When we were house hunting last summer, we noticed that most people were very clean. Of course, you want to put your best forward in the hopes you’ll sell your home. There was one house that we went into that was disgusting! Literally, the bedrooms smelled like sweaty gym clothes, stinky feet, etc. There were clothes on the floor, etc. In the bathroom, the toilets were unflushed, there was hair and toothpaste in the sinks. Basically, the house looked and felt like it was in habited by a bunch of dirty, lazy teenagers with no parental supervision. It was disgusting. Needless to say, we were in the house less than 5 minutes and I can still recall the stench to this day!
