Ok, I was going to be # 13, but Paisley beat me to it. I was double checking my spelling of superstitious as in (“I’m not superstitious, so I’ll be number 13”), but it took me too long…LOL!

I, too, am a frequent lurker and occasional poster. I’m still uncluttering in tiny increments…but it is going very SLOW, but I WILL keep at it. This forum has been a help and inspiration to me…and is also some great reading.

So, I should be # 14 (unless someone else is posting at the same time).

I believe that would make me #69, then. DON’T EVEN!

(We had a student whose mother complained that the paper number on her 14 year old daughter at softball tryouts was 69 and Mom was upset about this. I guess the kid was cut and the point became moot. I wonder if Mommie made an impression of some kind…)

I used to be an active lurker. Then life imploded. Now things are mostly back to normal and I can start reading this site on a regular basis again.

But I don’t post much. For one thing, other people usually say what I was going to say. The other thing is that I am not a minimalist and don’t want to be. I just want to get control of the stuff I have and declutter some of it. Sometimes this forum takes a strong minimalist stance and I don’t want to bump up against that. So I just glean information from the posts here, which has been very helpful.

Xarcady, I don’t aspire to minimalism either – just a comfortable calmish and functional space around me at home and at work. I’m sure there are lots of us like that on here. And lots of us who are only partly on the way to however minimalist or otherwise they wish to be. So do post when the fancy takes you.

I never wanted to become minimalist either. But then my goals for decluttering kept moving in a circle that became smaller and smaller and all of a sudden I am a minimal-ish. It can sneak up on you! πŸ˜‰ That does not mean I want everyone else to be like me though. I love to read other ppls point of view on things, so please post more xarcady! πŸ™‚

Lol I think I am the “unwilling minimalist”. Never wanted to be, still don’t want to be, but living in a tiny space with a crap layout is pushing me in that direction, balk though I might.

I like the concept of minimalism, but I don’t aspire to be a minimalist either. I like having furniture and clothes! As for knick knacks, meh…Perhaps I will someday be “minimal’ish” as Swede puts it (lol – I’m loving that!) but labeling myself as a minimalist seems too restricting. If I want something, I don’t want to feel like I’m depriving myself for not getting it because I want to fit into a certain criteria of how other people live their lives. Rules are good for some, probably most, but I think they can easily be counter productive depending on where you apply them in your life.

It’s like Eddie Vedder’s song Society, “There’s those thinking more or less, less is more. But if less is more, how are you keeping score? Means for every point you make, your level drops. Kind’a like starting from the top, you can’t do that.”

I found it interesting how he countered the lyrics in the beginning of his song which had to do with wanting more than you have or need, by referencing minimalism. Basically saying that it can be too much at either end of the spectrum depending on how you look at it. Even though a minimalist lifestyle is lacking of possessions, if one over thinks it then they can just as easily still clutter their world regardless by having too many rules and limitations.

I’m another “unwilling minimalist” as djk so aptly put it. I don’t really fully embrace the mindset, but I very much appreciate PEEP, it just keeps things calmer.

I like having room to put all the laundry away. I like not being afraid to open the pots & pans cupboard. I like having the things that I need–but the trick there is that I actually need less than my brain thinks I do. Aye, there’s the rub πŸ™‚

My goal was never minimalism but as I’ve decluttered, peeped and organized, I love empty, uncrowded spaces and fewer of everything.

What amazes me is how much stuff I bought, needed and found so appealing is now gone and I don’t miss ANYTHING!

I doubt I’ll ever be a true minimalist but it does appeal to me.

Minimalism sounds so EFFICIENT, but actually there are non-minimalist ways to be efficient too. I was reminded of this recently because my daughter is now expecting her first child, and she was reminiscing the other day about how, when she was little, my mum kept cut-down pieces of cereal packet in the kitchen drawer with crayons etc for art projects, and she is looking forward to me doing the same for the next generation. Of course fiddling about with empty cereal packets when a pack of paper is cheap is very cluttery, but it re-uses the card, card is easier for a tot to draw on than paper, and it builds irreplaceable memories. So I shan’t be minimalist on that one! Cereal packet in hand, where are the scissors…

I can’t believe this thread is still running, but I guess if I’ve seen it several times I must be “active” enough.

      So #71 here, I think.

Minimalism is a great concept, but I plan to stop short of losing interesting shreds of the past. You can’t be the family historian or a musician or a reader and be truly minimalist. Well, maybe you can, but I don’t want to go that far down the road, and that’s okay.

I just enjoy the not shopping part of minimalism. And the being able to find stuff part. I sort of enjoy housekeeping more too.

@Glossta – my dad brought scrapped computer printouts from work for us to draw on. I don’t remember any friends getting clean paper, we all got the backs of letters etc. I don’t remember paper being affordable before home printers.

@lifekeepshappening. it’s still not affordable, just now we all steal it from work πŸ˜›

I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination. I like furniture, clothes/shoes/bags, art, books, kitchen gear, etc. I have far more than I really *need* but it makes me happy.

It does seem to have levelled off at “enough”

some friends came by on Saturday who had not seen our “new” house (we’ve been here about a year). they asked “did you have to buy a lot of new furniture? this house is larger than your old place” “no… we said.. confused… we did buy one bedroom set, since now we have 2 guest rooms… and another set of sheets… but everything else is the same”

we put the furniture and gear from our flat into a home nearly 2x the size. now we look very minimal LOL. but we don’t want any MORE stuff…. perhaps a touch LESS.

    • #233634

      Active Posters

@luxcat – I buy our paper, but it’s the printer ink that my son gets through that kills me. “Fast draft” means nothing to that boy!

I’m going to be doing the opposite of you – moving from a large minimal-looking house into a cozy apartment where DF already has his stuff. We’ll see how minimal and self-righteous I am once I’ve moved πŸ™‚
