While it might not be on your priority list, a toothbrush holder is a fantastic way to keep your surfaces clean and organize clutter when it comes to keeping your toothbrushes all in one place. BUT we're not talking just about products that hold a tongue celaner or electric toothbrush. We are here to provide you with our reviews on some of the best toothbrush sanitizers available, although there were a few we found that you may not particularly like.
It was good fun for the team to check out a portable UV toothbrush sanitizer each and most of us ended up keeping one. They're all pretty different in the way that some aren't portable but more a permanent fixture. If you simply want to keep your brush head free of dust, products like simple holders and covers are probably suitable. But if you know about toothbrush sanitizers you will know that if you find the right one they're great products for helping with your oral hygiene routine.
Typically, toothbrush sanitizers work in two ways. Some will kill bacteria by using dry heat and the majority use short-wave ultraviolet light, or UV-C, to destroy germs quickly to prevent the build-up of unwanted bacteria like streptococcus, salmonella, and many more.
Take a look at the reviews below, hopefully, we've managed to sample the most suitable sanitizers for you to choose from.
The Best Toothbrush Sanitizer
1. TAO Clean Germ Shield UV Manual & Electric Toothbrush Sanitizer

Key Features
UV sanitizer
Travel size
4 minute cleaning cycle
Battery operated
Weighs 10.19 oz
The first review we are carrying out for toothbrush sanitizing products is the TAO Clean Germ Shield UV Manual & Electric Toothbrush Sanitizer. This device does come in fairly expensive, we found it pretty reasonable though for what you get out of it. And, if you travel lots and care about your oral health, this is a fantastic option and therefore the Unclutterer teams’ best choice of the sanitizers on our list.
It’s easy to use by simply opening the door and placing either your manual toothbrush or electric toothbrush face down in the case. Running on two AA batteries, supplied, it runs a quick 4-minute cycle using ultraviolet-C rays and you know when it’s finished when the led light goes out. Even though it only fits one toothbrush, the process is quick and safe enough to use other people’s toothbrushes in it. For a clean toothbrush after each use the TAO Clean is a great choice.
Pros
Universal – fits most sizes of electric toothbrushes
2 year warranty
Freestanding
Great for traveling with
Cons
White plastic case might look cheap
Fairly expensive
Only holds one toothbrush
2. CARESFULL UV Universal Toothbrush Sanitizer

Key Features
UV sanitizer
Pocket-sized
3-5 minutes cleaning cycle
Rechargeable built-in battery
Weighs 1 oz
The CARESFULL UV Universal Toothbrush Sanitizer is one of those products that all of us should have. If you want to leave it in your bathroom, it comes with magnets for wall mounting or you can simply use strong stickers. If you prefer to take it with you when you travel, it’s so lightweight and tiny and handy to take with you. We like that almost any sized toothbrush head should fit in the case and that it’s easy to use.
It comes with a USB lead for charging so once it’s fully charged simply open the lid and put the brush in. If you open the lid after three to five minutes and take the brush out, closing the lid will set it on a self-cleaning cycle and be ready in 3 minutes for next time you need to use it. If the lid isn’t opened at that time, and the brush is left in, it will continue working as a toothbrush sanitizer for 60 minutes and then will shut off automatically.
Pros
Auto shut-off
Wall mountable
Self-clean operation
Portable
Impressively priced
Cons
Holds just one brush at a time
Not ideal for some toothbrush heads
3. Avari Premium Stand and Wall Mount Toothbrush Sanitizer

Key Features
LED & heat sterilization
Freestanding or wall mounted
10 minutes cleaning cycle
Rechargeable built-in battery
Weighs 31 oz
The Avari Premium Stand and Wall Mount Toothbrush Sanitizer is a great piece of kit and we have chosen it as our best value option for our 2020 review list. Despite its high-end price it can clean up to 5 toothbrushes at a time and has a neat little holder attached to the side for your tube of toothpaste. The cleaning cycle is quick and this sanitizer doubles up as a toothbrush holder too so you can organize your bathroom. It has a great design and looks good either standing next to your sink or on the bathroom shelf and comes with fittings to mount it tidily on the wall. You might like that you can set a three-minute timer for when you brush your teeth too. Healthy mouths all round!
Pros
Fits up to 5 brushes
Dries toothbrushes after sanitization
Great design
Good way to organize toothbrushes
Great for cleaning all family brushes
Cons
Has to stay connected/plugged in
4. NewWay Travel Mini UVC Toothbrush Cover

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Travel/pocket-sized
5 minutes cleaning cycle
Rechargeable requires lithium-ion battery
Weighs 1.8 oz
We were confused at first, the NewWay Travel Mini UV-C Toothbrush Cover calls itself just a simple travel toothbrush cover, what the title doesn’t tell you is that it is in fact a great way to sterilize your toothbrush in just 5 minutes and it’s tiny enough to pop in your hand luggage when you travel, or your purse for taking to work.
If you need to clean after each use, the inner box is detachable because, of course, you can’t submerge the main holder under water as it holds the battery. It’s only about 65 x 51.5mm in size so not only ideal for traveling but great to leave on the side of the sink too. It was only launched a short while ago so there is still a lack of reviews to research through but we enjoyed using it and it worked as promised. The only thing is that you need to provide your own battery.
Pros
Suits all toothbrush heads
Protects the brush head in your bag or travel case
Cons
Battery not included
Battery charge only about 10 days with twice daily use
5. eoocvt Hot UV Disinfection Toothbrush Holder Storage Set

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Wall mountable
4 to 6 minutes cleaning cycle
Mains power needed
Weighs 12.8 oz
Where hygiene is an issue, the eoocvt sanitizers give you a clean toothbrush that is 99% germ-free. This is the eoocvt Hot Uv Disinfection Toothbrush Holder Storage Set which uses ultraviolet light. This UV toothbrush sterilizer needs to be warmed up for 10 seconds the first time you use it, and each time it isn’t used for a period of time, but that’s not something we would complain about. It will hold up to five toothbrushes so you can keep them organized and out of the way and the sanitizer section is built into that so everything is kept neat and tidy. It does have a hands-free toothpaste dispenser too which is really handy.
The adhesive pads can be used to attach it to the wall so it’s always in a handy place when you need it. The only thing we didn’t like is that it needs to be plugged in using the AC adaptor when in use and most of us won’t have such a power facility in the bathroom for obvious reasons. Some may not like the futuristic, ultra-modern design.
Pros
Wall mountable
Holds up to five manual or electric brushes
Fast cleaning cycle
Affordable
Cons
Uses mains power
Manual doesn’t have English instructions
Has to power off/on to refresh the cleaning cycle each time it’s used
6. TAO Clean Sonic Toothbrush and Cleaning Station

Key Features
UV sanitizer and sonic toothbrush
Travel size
2 minute timer (toothbrush)
Lithium-ion battery operated
Weighs 32 oz
This is the second of two TAO Clean products aimed at helping with oral hygiene. This set includes an electric sonic toothbrush as well as a cleaning station. We love the design, it’s very sleek and comes in black – certainly quite different from the other TAO Clean sanitizer we featured (no.1 on our review list). We chose the TAO Clean Sonic Toothbrush and Cleaning Station as our premium pick.
The toothbrush has dual settings – one for daily clean and one for sensitive teeth. It has a two-minute timer so you don’t over brush or under brush your teeth. The toothbrush sterilizer is quite bulky so not really a portable UV light option – it has a built-in heat element that dries the brush head too. The set is specifically designed to be used together. The toothbrush sterilizer will also charge up and dry your toothbrush to eliminate bacteria build-up. We think you might like that it does resemble the Philips Sonicare toothbrush.
Pros
Toothbrush with UV sanitizer set
Lithium-ion battery included
Two year warranty
Great design
Easy to use controls
Cons
It’s quite bulky (docking station)
Reports of failure within 3 months support limit
7. Good Voice Toothbrush Holder, Sanitizer & Toothpaste Dispenser

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Wall mountable
4 to 6 minutes cleaning cycle
Mains power needed
Weighs 17 oz
Good Voice sanitizers promise to give you up to five clean toothbrushes each time you use it. Clean your toothbrush with a UV light that works from within the storage compartment. It’s handy for keeping your brush heads clean as well as storing brushes out of the way when not in use. It triples up as a toothpaste dispenser too, hence its title “Good Voice Toothbrush Holder, Sanitizer & Toothpaste Dispenser“.
The adhesive pads can be used to attach it to the wall but they aren’t particularly strong so be prepared to have some better ones that are supplied to hand. The only thing we didn’t like is that it needs to be plugged in using the AC adaptor and the battery that needs to be charged isn’t supplied. Some may not like the ultra-modern design. If you do like this type of style though, due to the poor reviews you might prefer to go for the eoocvt we reviewed (no. 5 on our list) which has marginally better ratings.
Pros
One year warranty
Can hold 5 toothbrushes
3-in-1 pick
Cons
A number of bad reviews
Going to need stronger adhesive for wall mounting
Battery not included
8. Fairywill PRO Ultra-Sonic Power Whitening Toothbrush & Sanitizer Case

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Freestanding
4 to 6 minutes cleaning cycle
Wireless
Weighs 43 oz
The Fairywill PRO Ultra-Sonic Power Whitening Toothbrush & Sanitizer Case is a fantastic set to give as a gift, and great for those that like modern style so as far as sanitizers go this looks modern and stylish. It would be fab for student digs so you know your kid is keeping on top of his or her oral health!
Toothbrush: has 40,000 oscillations per minute plus five cleaning modes, with a two-minute brushing timer and 8 spare brush heads with 3 different capabilities. It has a wireless docking station that features the toothbrush sanitizer and it comes with a travel case that can charge your toothbrush too. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is supplied so you can charge up and get started. You must remember to close the door to begin the ultraviolet light sanitizing process.
Pros
Great gift set
Good for travel
1 year warranty
60 days money-back policy
Battery included
Cons
High-end -price
9. XQ-HD Portable Single Toothbrush Sanitizer Case

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Travel/pocket-sized
One minute cleaning cycle
Rechargeable requires lithium-ion battery
Weighs 3.94 oz
The XQ-HD Portable Single Toothbrush Sanitizer Case is our budget pick for good reason. We found it was one of the great products at such a low-end price and it’s extremely popular with those looking for fast charging easy-to-use sanitizers that keep your travel toothbrush or the ones at home clean and germ-free. We think this is a great portable toothbrush holder and as far as sanitizers go it’s easy to use by simply closing the lid and letting it work on one or two brush heads at a time. This UV toothbrush sanitizer is cheap, convenient, and doesn’t have to be used for travel as it comes with an adhesive pad so you can mount it to the wall for a more permanent option at home or at the office.
Pros
Auto shut-off
Lightweight
Wall mountable
USB charging
Cons
Might prefer to look at more heavy-duty sanitizers
10. RockTric Portable Double UV Toothbrush Case

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Travel/pocket-sized
One minute cleaning cycle
Rechargeable requires lithium-ion battery
Weighs 4.6 oz
The RockTric Portable Double UV Toothbrush Case works with ultraviolet light to clean and sterilize up to two toothbrushes at any one time. It’s a great little UV sanitizer and we found it at such a low price the team wondered if it would be any good at all. It’s lightweight and portable but can be wall-mounted using adhesive pads although once you do this it’s an absolute fiddle to try and charge it so the first thing we noticed was pretty poor design. If you’re not wall-mounting then it’s otherwise a useful portable UV sanitizer.
We did think that you would like that it’s so small so it works brilliantly if you are short on space. It does work well on either a manual or an electric toothbrush head and does what you expect it to – clean and sanitize to help with your oral health regime.
Pros
Low cost
Silicone case
Auto shut-off
USB charging
Cons
Poor design
Can’t charge when mounted on wall
11. Lecone Wall Mounted Space Saving Toothbrush Organizer

Key Features
UV light sterilizer
Wall mountable
One minute cleaning cycle
Rechargeable requires lithium-ion battery
Weighs 13 oz
If you are looking for something in the mid-price range then the Lecone Wall Mounted Space Saving Toothbrush Organizer might be the one for you. You can wall-mount it using strong adhesive pads and as well as using it as a toothbrush holder, it doubles up as a clever UV toothbrush sanitizer and switches on the cleaning cycle as soon as you close the lid.
You can clean up to four manual or electric toothbrushes at any one time so it’s great in a family bathroom for keeping brushes out of the way and having them clean and ready to use. The wall-mountable feature means that you can remove the device for charging elsewhere in the house. One of the best toothbrush sanitizers in its price bracket, in our opinion.
Pros
USB rechargeable
Can remove from wall to charge
Nice design
Easy to hang/remove
Cons
Place only brush heads inside as may not hold weight of full-electric toothbrush
May not be suitable for round/spin electric brush heads
Features To Consider With Toothbrush Sanitizers
We've reviewed quite a few great toothbrush sanitizers, here we have some brief tips on what to look out for if this is your first or a replacement sanitizer.
There are handheld versions that are great if you want a UV toothbrush sanitizer that you can take while traveling with you. There are also wall-mountable models but be sure to check that you mount them near a socket (if yours runs from mains power) or that this type can be removed easily from the wall for charging. Battery operated may seem a bit too traditional and they can be a pain if you often forget to replace batteries. Built-in batteries still need charging, usually with a USB cord, but you will still have to move it to a mains socket.
Here are a few tips when you're doing your research into a sanitizer for toothbrush cleanliness.
Accessories
A UV toothbrush sanitizer is a fantastic bathroom accessory in its own right but some of the best toothbrush sanitizers are often supplied with their own accessories. These might include a toothbrush holder, a toothpaste dispenser, or a travel case that can charge up your brush when you're on the move. Some sets are supplied in full so you get a toothbrush, spare brush heads, wireless docking station, and more. Don't be too taken by accessories though, the best thing is to look at sanitizers that are of good quality and functional enough to last.
Cleaning Speed
The best toothbrush sanitizer is one that works for you and they generally don't take long to sanitize. The small portable UV toothbrush sterilizers we tested progressed through the cleaning process from just one minute although you might prefer the idea of something that works for longer periods. If that's the case a five-minute cycle is likely to give you peace of mind that the UV light is working and doing its job.
If it has a self-clean function on top of a sanitizing feature then the cleaning mode could run anything from a few minutes to a few hours. Although we wouldn't recommend anything electrical running while you aren't indoors, auto shut-off after the self-clean cycle is a good thing to look out for.
Design
Different brands offer different UV toothbrush sanitizer designs. You might be looking for freestanding versions, wall mounting, or those specifically designed to be space-saving. In the same respect, you might prefer one that doubles up as a holder as well as a sanitizer. Then there are some that are designed to be compact but have a number of uses - organizing, sterilizing, and dispensing toothpaste.
By looking through just a few you'll see the various types available and will eventually discover the best toothbrush sanitizer to suit your needs and budget.
Portability
There are portable sanitizers for traveling with and cleaning just one brush head, and there are mobile family sanitizers that will clean multiple brushes at one time.
We particularly like the Fairywill PRO Ultra-Sonic Power Whitening Toothbrush & Sanitizer Case - it comes with lots of pieces and the travel case charges up the toothbrush as well as fitting two brush heads, great for a couples weekend away or if you're taking an extended solo business trip.
Space Saving and Wall Mounting
The majority of sanitizing products don't have a large footprint but there are options if you truly are tight on space. You can get portable toothbrush sanitizers and small versions that can be stored away in the bathroom cupboard. The other option is to buy one that can be wall-mounted, although check that you can remove it easily without damaging your wall or bathroom mirror for access to a powerpoint away from water. Most wall mounting options won't mean you need fixings and generally, they'll be supplied with adhesive pads although we'd probably recommended buying spares. If you have a textured wall surface then a thick spongy sticky pad will be needed. Also, don't overload the sanitizer - for instance, take brush heads of electric toothbrushes so the sterilizer isn't taking the weight of the heavy handle.
Sterilization Method
Toothbrushes can harbor germs and bacteria even after just one wash. Even the humidity in the bathroom can generate germs. If the bacteria is spread through your mouth it can cause infections so even if you are replacing your toothbrush or brush head every three months, you could still be introducing germs into your mouth.
This is why we use toothbrush sanitizers which manufacturers suggest are effective in killing around 99% of harmful microbes. They make use of artificial ultraviolet (the only natural source is from the sun) which is a good, fast working disinfectant which allegedly prevents the buildup of bacteria and kills it.
The radiation is so low that it isn't harmful and you should always avoid looking at the UV rays emitted. Most toothbrush sanitizers work when you close the lid and stop again when you open so this can prevent even little eyes from the glare.
Toothbrush Sanitizer FAQ
Q: Why is it important to clean your toothbrush?
Microorganisms can grow on a toothbrush after use from saliva, debris, and oral bacteria. Even if a toothbrush looks clean, it can still bear germs. You can simply put your brush in boiling water for 15 minutes after each use and as regularly as you want, soak in white distilled vinegar for about 6 hours or even in mouthwash for 15 minutes.
To save time, use a sanitizing toothbrush cleaner and leave it to do its magic while you get on with other things!
Q: How often should you sterilize toothbrush heads?
Rinse after every use and sanitize it as germs can collect after just one use.
Q: Do you have to dry toothbrush heads before sterilizing them?
You must rinse as you usually would after use, getting rid of oral debris so it doesn't collect inside the toothbrush sanitizer. Air-dry it if you have time then put it in the device you're using to disinfect it. Remember to remove brush heads from electric toothbrushes before cleaning.
