A pouffe is essentially a foot stool and in historical French times it was something that was 'puffed up'. Basically, the pouffe is a padded backless and very small bench that you can pop your feet on, an extension of your sofa or your office chair and a way to lie back, relax, and take time out. Some might compare them to an ottoman but they aren't the same. The ottoman will generally be a box with a storage drawer or opening where objects like linens can be kept free of dust. The pouffe these days can usually be used as a decorative item but they still have their uses.
Pouffes come in all shapes and sizes and the fabrics used can be from a huge variety of choices like wool, sheepskin, leather and more eco-friendly materials like bamboo, cotton and bonded leather.
We reviewed 15 of the best pouffes and whether you are looking for one with style to sit in the corner and supplement your decor or to use as a coffee table or extra seat. Take a look at our reviews. You'll find some tips and advice towards the bottom of the page if you want to find out more about pouffes and choosing one that suits your home sweetly.
The Best Pouffe
1. Casa Platino – Hand Knitted Cable Style Dori Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 20″
Height 14″
Hand knitted cotton
Weighs 6 lbs
10 colorways
Designed to be tough enough to use as extra seating, the Casa Platino – Hand Knitted Cable Style Dori Pouf is the answer to those with a low budget. Our best choice is a great extra seat for the house offering a casual style and supplementing any style of decor. The Unclutterer team loves the cable knit style and the color choices are fairly muted but for a contrasting choice, the blue really pops. We like that it’s almost a beanbag/pouf ottoman crossover although it’s sturdy and not fluid like a traditional bean bag. A lovely round pouf at a good price.
Pros
Great design
Hand knitted
Excellent color choice
Affordable
Supplied stuffed
Cons
Not for frequent use
2. Signature Design by Ashley – Sweed Valley Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 20.5″
Height 20.5″
Braided jute/cotton
Weighs 1 lbs
Natural
In vogue and on trend, this natural beauty is a good size and a nice pouf to show off in any house or home. The genuine natural jute is braided but still retains a simple style. The Signature Design by Ashley – Sweed Valley Pouf is sturdy and wide enough to sit on or use as a foot stool – it’s filled with quite a densely packed polystyrene bead and we think it’s ideal for the garden room, lounge or bedroom. Put the pouf in a clean corner or in pride of place so it’s handy when you need it. Be aware that if yours is supplied with a zipper, it is a false one as the natural cover isn’t designed to be washed so spot clean only but it does allow you to add extra stuffing if you want to make it even more robust.
Pros
Beautiful and simple
Natural fabric
Sturdy
Portable seating
Cons
No two are identical
3. Keter Urban Knit Pouf – 3 Piece Set

Key Features
Diameter x height (seat) 22.3″ x 12″
Diameter x height (table) 16″ x 16.3″
Polypropylene resin
Table + 2 x round pouf seating
3 colorways
Constructed with polypropylene resin the Keter Urban Knit Pouf – 3 piece set is ideal for outdoors and the table is a fabulous added extra. All three pieces come in a choice of muted neutral colors and the poufs are in a contrasting but complementary color to the table. We love the table as it has a huge variety of uses. You can use it as a blanket box or put your ice bag in there for serving drinks or use it as a storage bin – it has a 10-gallon capacity – or pop the lid on and use it as extra seating.
These pieces make excellent outdoor accessories and should be easy to clean with a hose every couple of months to get rid of dust. We don’t recommend leaving out in the weather though as moss easily collects so if you don’t have room to store them we’d use a waterproof cover when they’re not in use.
Pros
Great price
Good for the patio or yard
Sturdy
Cons
Table lid is quite loose
4. Marrakesh Gallery Moroccan Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 20″
Height 12″
Goatskin leather
Weighs 2.1 lbs (unstuffed)
4 colorways
This is the brown leather (other colors available) Moroccan chic pouf and it would actually be a shame to only use it to put your feet up on. The Marrakesh Gallery Moroccan Pouf is well made and the goatskin is a long-lasting alternative to other materials and it would look great in any area of the house. Use it as a portable seat or simply as a unique and decorative accessory to enhance exotic Marrakesh- style decor.
It’s a good size for even small spaces as it’s just 20 inches in diameter and the height is ideal if you need to store it under a chair or piece of furniture. Underneath the pouf is a strong zipper that will keep the stuffing in beautifully and if you’re unsure how to stuff a pouf cover it does come with instructions and ideas of what to use. With the gorgeous stitching and well-processed leather, we chose this as our best value and we found it at just under $64 plus shipping.
Pros
30 day money-back guarantee
1 year replacement warranty
Beautiful brown leather
Other options available
Gorgeous & stylish
Cons
Stuffing not supplied
5. Signature Design by Ashley – Absalom Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 16″ x 16″
Height 16″
Cotton/hemp
Weighs 9 lbs
Natural
Visitors will be naturally impressed with the Signature Design by Ashley – Absalom Pouf which will sit proudly in any room. It comes well stuffed and holds its shape well although, as with anything fabric designed to be sat on or styled as a foot rest, it can become misshapen over time so just needs a ‘floof’ every now and then! The textured cotton and hemp fabric mix means you won’t feel like you’re sliding off it and you can easily spot clean it and lightly vacuum it when needed.
Pros
Alternative size and color options available
Impressive natural styling
Stands up nicely
Well made
Cons
Can become misshapen over time
6. REDEARTH Cube Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 20″ x 20″
Height 20″
Fabric
Weighs 2.94 lbs (unstuffed)
6 pattern / color options
This cube pouf comes from REDEARTH and comes in a good choice of different colors and patterns to accessorize any room. Measuring a good 20 inches high, wide and deep it’s a nice tidy size to keep in any space. We tried the mud cloth mustard simply because the color is vibrant and the print is almost an aztec style although the poufs are hand made in India. We like that the cover can be carefully hand-washed although spot clean is best rather than removing the cover and having to restuff it every time there’s a light spill on it.
The pouf will be supplied unstuffed but you can use all sorts of things to fill it like old scraps of cloth, towel, and sheets – that will save hassle trying to get polystyrene beans into it and will help make it much more dense and shapely. Top tip – you could use it to cover an existing pouf of the same shape although shape may alter an inch more or less so be creative!
Pros
Lovely choice available
Well made
Zipper on three sides of base for ease of filling
Inexpensive
Cons
Supplied unstuffed
Needs lots of stuffing
7. Signature Design by Ashley – Natural Woolen Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 20″
Height 14″
Hand knitted wool
Weighs 5 lbs
Natural
The Signature Design by Ashley – Natural Woolen Pouf is soft and durable and comes already stuffed with a dense filling of polystyrene so can be used as a footrest or as trendy extra seating. The rounded design keeps its shape and we think it’s brilliant for baby’s or kid’s rooms where you can sit comfortably at their height – or it could simply be used to accessorize any room in the house.
It is pretty lightweight and would even be good to keep it next to the sofa to put your feet up when you’re ready to relax. This pouf isn’t available in anything other than natural (at the time of reviewing) so you might prefer to look at the rest of our review list if you prefer a contrasting color to your current decor.
Pros
Mid-range price
Comes stuffed
Portable
Good seat size
Cons
Spot clean only
8. Décor Therapy Bench

Key Features
Width x depth: 20″ x 20.5″
Height 10″
Jute
Weighs 10.88 lbs
Natural
The Décor Therapy Bench is made with genuine natural jute which gives off a lovely braided and natural style. It is round and low and makes a great place to seat yourself low, perhaps when playing with the kids, or to set your feet on when you’re ready to chill out. Jute is hard-wearing so we would expect this to last years. It might not be ideal to sit on with shorts or thin pants as jute is, of course, quite a rough material but you could combat this by popping a circular and thin pad on top before you sit down, this will help reduce wear too.
We like the idea of getting two to put on either side of your favorite bedroom chair or sofa, or for putting next to your coffee table so they’re handy to move into place when needed. Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth and vacuum with the soft attachment.
Pros
100% natural jute outer
Ready stuffed
Firm
Cons
A bit rough surface
9. Flash Furniture Barrington Upholstered Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 15.75″
Height 16.25″
Fabric
Weighs 6.5 lbs
9 color options
If you’re looking for simple yet modern poufs the Flash Furniture Barrington Upholstered Pouf is just that. Available in both neutral and vibrant colors you can choose to go subtle or add a splash to supplement your room decor. The interior of this pouf has been constructed with wood so it won’t lose its shape and it’s firm enough to sit on or even use as a casual table. It’s a good height so sits perfectly next to a sofa or chair and the small diameter means it doesn’t have a large footprint so it’s perfect for small spaces or tucking away when you don’t need it. You might like that this has the best percentage of positive reviews from all of those we tested.
Pros
Multiple color choices
Well built
Portable
Cons
Hard to choose a color!
10. blue page Stripe Morocco Decorative Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 18″ x 18″
Height 16″
Cotton blend
Weighs 2.82 lbs (unstuffed)
Natural/black
The blue page Stripe Morocco Decorative Pouf is one of those stand-out products – beautifully crafted and depending on how much stuffing you decide to fill it with you can decide whether it’s ultra-firm or squishy and cute. We thought this was so tasteful and great in any room whether you have contemporary or classic decor and the tassels just add that extra bit of fluf to your pouf. This would go with Boho chic or will accessorize a room with elegant design so it really is versatile. The zipper feels strong enough that we weren’t worried about it opening and spilling out the filling.
Take it outside to the deck in dry weather to use as an extra seat or put it in the space next to your coffee table – the choice is yours. You could even use it as a cover for an existing pouf ottoman of a similar size.
Pros
Beautiful fabric
Cute design
Cons
Stuffing not supplied
11. Christopher Knight Home Agatha Knitted Cotton Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 19.5″
Height 12.75″
Knitted cotton
Weighs 1 lbs
Beige
Make yourself comfortable with the Christopher Knight Home Agatha Knitted Cotton Pouf which is soft yet firm enough to perch your butt or feet on. The cable knit design makes it look and feel handmade and it’s so lightweight that the kids will love to use it too yet it won’t roll over too easily. It’s great for making casual extra seating areas and looks good next to a coffee table or your favorite chair. It has a simple shape and design and comes in just one color but it’s subtle enough to fit in with any decor without standing out too much.
Pros
Good extra seat idea
Space-saving
Easy to carry
Cons
May become misshapen over time
12. ArtOuarzazate Stuffed Moroccan Square Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 18″ x 18″
Height 14″
Distressed leather
Weighs 1.94 lbs (unstuffed)
Tan
If you are looking for a genuine brown leather pouf to use as extra seating or to rest your legs and feet then the ArtOuarzazate Stuffed Moroccan Square Pouf is a fabulous choice. We love the bold cube shape and that it is very well made. The leather is soft yet long-lasting and the visible seams and distressed leather help it to not look manufactured as you bought it from Walmart. The base is cotton and it does have a zipper so that you can add as much or as little filling as you want to the stuffing it comes with, so you can make it firmer as the filling it comes with is only sufficient enough to keep it squishy (for packing purposes).
Pros
Supplied already stuffed
Gorgeous design
Natural leather
Cons
Might want to add to filling
13. Traditional India – Indian Handmade Pouf

Key Features
Diameter 18″
Height 13″
Appliqued cotton
Weighs 12.3 oz
Multicolor
For a real Boho-chic/vintage/hippy feel this is one of the new-looks-old-pieces from Traditional India that goes neatly on the floor and is great as a little footstool and loved by those seeking a standout accessory. The Traditional India – Indian Handmade Poufs’ upholstery is natural cotton with patchwork detail and embroidery weaved through it. We love the idea of getting a pair if only just to add color to your home space. Use your poufs as extra seating in your living room or outside under a covered deck for entertaining, festival style. In brief, it’s cheerful and arty!
Pros
Colorful
Hand made
Great anywhere in the home
Cons
Stuffing not supplied
Color may vary from description
14. Foreign Affairs Square Canvas Leather Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 16″ x 16″
Height 16″
Canvas/leather
Weighs 19 lbs
Brown/gray
The Foreign Affairs Square Canvas Leather Pouf is a great extra seat and feels sturdy although we weren’t sure whether it would keep its shape for too long. The description lacked fine detail but the detail on this cube-shaped pouf in leather and canvas is pleasant if not trying to resemble luggage! Perhaps the detail is too much for some especially if you prefer the detail to be on the fabric and particularly if you are looking for a more natural or traditional style. All in all, it’s pretty much a canvas/leather pouf of a reasonable size.
As far as existing reviews go, this is a fairly new product from Foreign Affairs whose products include some great original looking items so we weren’t surprised this was quite a unique design.
Pros
Already stuffed
Cons
A bit expensive
15. Décor Therapy Quinn Pouf

Key Features
Width x depth: 24″ x 24″
Height 14″
Wool/faux fur
Weighs 7 lbs
Multicolored
The most expensive on our list makes our premium pick and is certainly for those who want to add style and colorful features to a room or den. The Décor Therapy Quinn Pouf provides low seating and complements most furniture whether you have opted for Mexican or tex-mex style throughout the home or are enhancing an otherwise plain space with a bit of color and vibrant pattern.
The wool knit upper and false fur seat give it a warming look and feel and it’s cozy on your toes and butt too! While Decor Therapy isn’t exclusively known for poufs and seating, the two that we have reviewed complement the furniture pieces that they supply.
Pros
Supplied stuffed
Looks unique
Cozy & soft
Cons
No zip – spot clean only
Expensive
Features To Consider With Pouffes
We think every home should have a pouf or two. Whether you are looking to accessorize a room, use an ottoman, footstool, or pouf as they're designed for, or want extra occasional seating, they are a great idea and a small one will be portable enough to store in a corner or under a piece of furniture if you want the convenience but are short on space.
The best poufs are versatile and great to put in the living room, snug, den, play area - in fact anywhere there's room. You can choose from a soft leather pouf to one made with jute, cotton or canvas. The choice is yours but here are a few tips on what features to look out for when you're looking to buy a new portable piece of furniture like a lovely pouf.
Material
You can find any type of material that makes a good pouf but you should always make sure it's fire retardant for safe use in your home.
Velvet, leather, cotton, suede, jute, canvas - all great materials that are strong enough to make a pouf. The decision you make will be what you plan to use your new pouf for.
Leather is good to use as a casual coffee table in the living room or informal snug. We like the idea of a Moroccan style made with soft leather as it provides a good gripping surface and is normally rounded with a flat surface top. Leather is also warm and comfortable to sit on, it wears well and simply needs a wipe clean and a little conditioner every now and then to protect it.
Velvet offers a soft look to any environment and can be used as an elegant and timeless feature as well as being functional as a footstool or spare seat. Easy to vacuum clean with the soft brush attachment or spot clean with a cleaner suitable for cotton velvet.
Cotton, canvas, and even denim can be used to enhance color and you can experiment by adding matching or contrasting colors and patterns depending on the style you want. Usually easy to spot clean but can attract dirt and stain easily so the best is one with a hand-washable removable cover.
Size
A small comfortable pouf, or a couple around your room, can add depth to your home decor as well as being functional. They work well in every room but unlike an ottoman, they don't have legs or storage so they're typically a floor seat or foot rest.
If you see round poufs take a look at the diameter and see first if it is best for your space, for instance, if you want it to fit in a specific location in your room or to slide it underneath a piece of furniture. Then the larger the measurement the more likely you are to use it as a floor seat or leg rest. If you'll use it as an occasional table you won't want it to be too low although they don't work well in this capacity unless you want your favorite copy of Q or Ideal Home magazine to hand.
Shape
You will find all shapes and sizes of poufs and there's no wonder when they can be so versatile. Poufs are popularly used as casual seating or as an end table. The shape will determine what your design is like and the wrong shape can easily throw off your design ideas.
Take a look at your space, decor, and other furniture, and pay attention to space and the angles. We like the idea of adding round poufs where everything in the room is squared off as they can soften the decor.
Style
Now you have decided on the shape and size, the style and design will be next on your checklist. Do you want your new poufs to stand out or blend in? Will they be in a contrasting color to add to an otherwise subtly styled decor or are you looking for a muted color to tone down brighter walls and bold furniture?
You'll find printed cotton and natural leathers in round, cylindrical, cubed, or rectangular designs. Just have a think about whether you will use it as a functional piece of furniture or as an accent piece. The style and color should fit in perfectly with your own style and, hopefully, reflect your personality too.
Comfort
If you're going to use your new pouf for relaxing in front of the TV you should look at how comfortable it is. You will want to sink into it when sitting so check out soft squishy poufs or those where you can decide how much filling to put in it. Sturdy poufs are good for sitting at the coffee table or putting things on in your living room so you'll want a flat-ish surface as well as filling that's firm enough that objects don't slide or fall off.
Pouffe FAQ
Q: Are poufs comfortable?
Not just for decoration, people enjoy using poufs as low seating for relaxing or eating, they can set the mood and supplement the room decor - but used for sitting a pouf needs to be comfortable.
Moroccan style poufs are generally made of soft leather and those with a cotton or woolen knit design are soft and comfortable. If they aren't overfilled they should be squidgy enough to sink into when relaxing.
Q: What is the purpose of a pouf?
They're versatile and can help tie together your room colors and design. Poufs can function as a seat, somewhere to rest weary feet, and even as a casual table top to keep items like letters and newspapers to hand. How useful they are usually depends on where you locate them.
Q: What can I stuff a pouf with?
Some people like to use classic polystyrene beans or balls or cushion inserts. If you want to end up with a firm pouf, the best things to use can be pieces of clothing, blankets, old linens, and more which should make them lovely and plump and heavy enough so they aren't too lightweight. We have used parts of old comforters before, it just takes a bit of time and creativity to get the filling in the right places - especially the corners in square covers and the edges in round ones.
You might even choose to cover an existing pouf if you can find a cover that's the same size or bigger. It might just need packing with a little more stuffing to fill it out.
Q: Where does the pouf go in a living room?
The best poufs aren't a replacement for another piece of furniture, they're a great addition to any living room or other space. You can:
- Use it as somewhere to rest weary feet - they are lightweight and easy to move about. Try it in your baby's room in front of your feeding chair or next to your favorite sofa.
- Turn it into an extra place to sit - unexpected guests might need that last seat. Or use it in your mudroom or front entrance so you can easily sit and remove your boots.
- Put a tray on it if it has a flat enough surface and pop treats on there when you're entertaining.
- Use the pouf to add a bit of elegance or color to your living room - nothing like a bit of pizzazz to liven up dull decor!
Q: What is the difference between a pouf and an ottoman?
The difference is mainly in appearance and design. Ottomans generally have legs to raise them off the ground and are firm and sturdy. Most poufs are used as floor pillows if squishy and don't have legs and instead have hard-wearing bases so they can sit on the floor.
