The Best Whiteboard
If you are in teaching, training, giving presentations, you work in the office, or have a home office, a whiteboard is a staple item. Great for wiping clean, the white glossy finish gives you the chance to put ideas together or show a group your thoughts.
Writing things down and seeing them in print is the best way to remember things clearly and a whiteboard & memo board is something many of us have been familiar with since school. They were replacements for blackboards years ago because they are useful and wipe clean with the minimum of mess. Using non-permanent dry erase markers makes a whiteboard an accessory that we can't do without in the working space.
We've put together a review list where we have tried and tested whiteboards at the Unclutterer team digs. We've looked at a large whiteboard, small wall mounted boards, standing whiteboards, and more including accessories they come with or are available. Take a look at our list if you're on the lookout for a budget or high-end that suits your home or office.

Here at Unclutterer we always say that cheap doesn’t always mean poor quality. Unfortunately, this may be a first. At this price, we weren’t expecting much with the U Brands Magnetic Dry Erase Board to begin with but it’s hard to be disappointed at this amazing price. It does have its positives – It’s inexpensive and supplied with a dry erase marker, eraser which can be attached to the frame, plus a magnet. It’s ideal for noting things down on although it’s hard to hang so we recommended buying your own velcro. It is, however, difficult to clean.

This is the Unclutterer teams’ premium pick, and for very good reason too! The most expensive on our review list, this is a board for professionals or for those wanting a good all-round solution. Great for meetings or in the classroom, presentations, or even in the gym dressing room for outlining rules and tactics! It is double-sided and flips with ease. It is also height adjustable too so children can reach it too.

Keeping your notes and information in plain view is important and what’s better than having a dry erase board in the office so everything stays present. This AmazonBasics Dry Erase Easel White Board is great for professional use and there are few options. We reviewed the four-legged version which sits quite solidly in place, but also available is a tripod style with three legs, and another with just two legs. It is easy to assemble, the height adjustment is simple to use and the legs stay in place nicely. Whilst there are two different sizes (the smaller one is 8.5 x 11 inches) we decided to review this size as it’s similar to the other mini dry erase boards on our list. Kedudes 11 x 14″ Whiteboard comes with magnets if you want to mount on a refrigerator or other magnetic surface. If you prefer to wall mount it on a wall surface then double-sided tape comes with the package (although if you choose this option you might prefer to buy your own velcro or something similar). It’s great for kids, homeschooling, as a drawing easel, or even to write your to-do list or a shopping list on. We think it’s good to have in the office too. The Kedudes whiteboard comes with six colored dry erase markers each with an eraser on its tip.

Quartet 8.5 x 11″ Mini Magnetic Whiteboard has a small writing surface of course and it comes with two magnets and a dry erase marker. It’s versatile and it’s mobile. Features To Consider With Whiteboards
Unsure what to look out for when you're looking to buy a whiteboard? How do you know which one you're supposed to pick?
You may already know that there are many features to look out for in a whiteboard and each one is slightly different in its own way, yet they all look surprisingly similar.
Here's a quick guide to help you find the product that suits you and go through what to look out for whether you're planning to use it in school, the office, at home, or even in your local eatery.
Accessories
While accessories aren't the be-all of buying a whiteboard, they'll get you started when you first receive your package. Typically they'll be supplied with dry erase markers, an eraser, and a few magnets if the whiteboard is magnetic. You might prefer to buy your own supplies in addition to these but do remember that the surface may only be compatible with a certain type or make. If that's the case, you'll find that the marker doesn't even write on the surface and will smudge when you try and clean it off - a bit messy!
Other accessories might be hooks so you can use a larger whiteboard as a flipchart and a pen tray so the pens, eraser, and magnets are neatly kept to hand.
Cleaning
We don't recommend that you use any chemical cleaners on the surface of a whiteboard. If you do you will risk staining the surface as it will absorb the moisture and cause 'ghosting' where the ink can' no longer be removed - nothing worse than a dirty looking stained whiteboard. There is one exception and that would be if your whiteboard has a glass or tempered glass surface.
Erasers are supplied or generally available to buy that are best used on your whiteboard. They are called 'dry erase' because they need just that. Sometimes a dry cloth will work but you're best keeping with the eraser that is recommended.
There are specialist sprays available that have been designed to work on a whiteboard surface. They are cleaners or conditioners. You can also purchase whiteboard wipes. However, there is one brand that we found you can only use related products such as Quartet.
Freestanding
Every productive office needs a whiteboard. Freestanding whiteboards are useful where you have space and need the board to be portable or it needs to be stored after use.
With freestanding boards, more legs are best for sturdiness. Avoid those with cheap plastic frames. If it does happen to get knocked over or dropped in transport, a tougher aluminum frame is best and wooden frames are always stronger than flimsy plastic.
Magnetic
It probably goes without saying that the best whiteboards are magnetic and give you another way to use the board. An ideal purchase if you intend to use it regularly or as a permanent fixture in that you can write on its surface, can apply magnets to hang notes on it, and one that also has flipchart hooks so you have the option to use it as a noticeboard or don't want to completely wipe your text or graphics every time you need a new page.
Portability
The major benefits of whiteboards is that they are lightweight and versatile. Mobile boards are ideal for business meetings, training, schooling - and a portable one is ideal when either you don't have space or don't want to hang it on a wall. If you need it to be portable it doesn't have to be small. Lots of freestanding boards come with wheels or if not they are foldable and made it easier to carry. We just don't recommend a whiteboard with a glass surface if you will be frequently transporting it unless it is safe tempered glass, though even then you don't want to knock it during transit and break it while you're on your way to your next meeting or class.
Size
Even smaller whiteboards can be double-sided so if you lack space or simply want a small whiteboard then you can find lapboards, freestanding (like picture frames), and wall-mountable whiteboards from around 8 inches wide.
Wall Mounted
The fixings are the most important thing if you want to mount your whiteboard on the wall. They need to be well made and tough enough to take the weight of the board so it won't fall off - this is both for safety and to avoid frustration. A light board can even fall off with a little gust of wind if it isn't attached properly.
Invest in some double-sided adhesive pads, strong tape, or even velcro if your chosen board comes with its own as we have found those supplied are not strong enough. These types of boards also are unlikely to have holes or screw fixings.
If you really want to avoid accidents, strong corner fixings are the best and the most secure way of fixing to a wall. Any designed to 'hang' onto a wall like a picture aren't always great and often best avoided.
Whiteboard FAQ
Q: What's the best way to clean a whiteboard?
As we noted above, avoid chemical or industrial based cleaners and Windex (or similar screen cleaners) should only be used if the surface is glass. An extremely lightly damp cloth can be used but only very occasionally. Ghosting occurs when the ink hasn't been removed as the manufacturer recommends and this means that the writing will stain and can't be removed.
Q: What fixtures do you need to hang a whiteboard?
Corner fittings offer the most secure way of mounting the board on a wall or vertical surface. When doing your research, make sure that fittings and fixtures are supplied and follow the instructions for the safest way of hanging the whiteboard. We would avoid hanging like a picture though - as you use the board and pressure is applied there is every chance that fittings will come loose and damage your wall.
Q: How can I prevent stains and scratches?
Use a dry eraser on a dry erase whiteboard. Clean the eraser and store it in a dry area in between uses. You can buy whiteboard spray cleaner and conditioner, to be used monthly, if you want to enhance the surface and remove any built-up residue. Only use clean products, ensure that pens lids remain on between uses, and clean thoroughly each day. By cleaning it properly and using items recommended by the manufacturer you are also protecting the surface from unnecessary scratching.
Also, aluminum frames should be scratch-proof so it leaves you to only have to look after the writing surface.
So, there you are the ultimate brief bit of advice for buying a whiteboard and keeping it in tip-top condition!
