The Best Whiteboard
If you are in teaching, training, giving presentations, you work in the office, or have a home office, a whiteboard is a staple item. Great for wiping clean, the white glossy finish gives you the chance to put ideas together or show a group your thoughts.
Writing things down and seeing them in print is the best way to remember things clearly and a whiteboard & memo board is something many of us have been familiar with since school. They were replacements for blackboards years ago because they are useful and wipe clean with the minimum of mess. Using non-permanent dry erase markers makes a whiteboard an accessory that we can't do without in the working space.
We've put together a review list where we have tried and tested whiteboards at the Unclutterer team digs. We've looked at a large whiteboard, small wall mounted boards, standing whiteboards, and more including accessories they come with or are available. Take a look at our list if you're on the lookout for budget or high-end that suits home or office.
VIZ-PRO is one of the leaders in the manufacture and supply of physical media display products. This easy to clean whiteboard is the Unclutterer best choice. We like its simplicity and that it seems to be the perfect size for a number of uses. VIZ-PRO 40 x 30″ Magnetic Dry Erase Board has ABS corners – no sharp edges for anyone to scratch themselves on when in situ or when carrying around for transporting. If you don’t have a stand or don’t want it to take up space, it is supplied with screws for wall mounting so it can be a permanent fixture in any space. The clip-on pen tray is handy too.

VIZ-PRO Light Melamine is a free standing board that sits on a tripod. The tripod itself is adjustable to achieve 46 inches in height at its lowest, reaching 64 inches at its tallest (top of whiteboard frame). It is easy to set up and simply adjusted using knobs on the legs that are unscrewed and screwed tight when the correct height level is reached. This VIZ-PRO is lightweight and the legs fold away neatly behind the board itself making it ultra-portable. You might like that it comes with movable hooks at the top so that you can hang a flipchart.
Multi-use (flipchart or whiteboard)
Easy to clean
Legs don’t fit behind board snugly
Work, play, and communicate – this Arteza Framed Magnetic Whiteboard is a great little set and ideal for giving. You may like these for children as they are fun and great for homeschooling too – if your little one comes up with some ideas for showing at school, they are light enough to carry. We also think that if there’s a loved one who struggles to communicate verbally, these are a wonderful size, saving on paper waste and allowing them to communicate through writing. Good for all sorts of uses. This comes with magnetic markers, dry erase markers, magnets for use on the board, and for hanging on a magnetic surface (e.g refrigerator), and it can also be wall mounted. Each board each comes with the accessories needed to mount to the wall or magnetic surface.

Magnets aren’t strong enough

May prefer to buy own tape/velcro
Here at Unclutterer we always say that cheap doesn’t always mean poor quality. Unfortunately, this may be a first. At this price, we weren’t expecting much with the U Brands Magnetic Dry Erase Board to begin with but it’s hard to be disappointed at this amazing price. It does have its positives – It’s inexpensive and supplied with a dry erase marker, eraser which can be attached to the frame, plus a magnet. It’s ideal for noting things down on although it’s hard to hang so we recommended buying your own velcro. It is, however, difficult to clean.
Good for children
Tape/velcro not included
Magnets not strong enough
This Magnetic Whiteboard by Quartet is a nice product at a good price. It is a board for hanging, has a clean looking wooden white frame but is available also in black, red and blue, and is magnetic. It comes with two magnets and a dry erase marker to get you started. It’s versatile and can be used for writing and wiping then can be used as a bulletin board when you attach magnets. Hang it vertically or horizontally so that you can easily reach and view notes, reminders, and more when you need to. Perfect for a number of uses and available in a smaller size which we also reviewed (no.12 on our list and our budget pick).

AmazonBasics produces some stunningly simple products including this whiteboard. We think AmazonBasics 42 x 36″ Magnetic Framed Dry Erase White Board is the best value option from our review list and one of the best whiteboards at its price. Supplied with two magnets for using the board for posting along with a dry marker for the writing surface. In our opinion, this is an economic buy at a great price, and it’s a fantastic size for planning and showcasing in the home, office, or schooling area. Because it’s magnetic you have the choice to attach other things than post-its and we think this appeals to teachers, trainers, or simply to write down your thoughts.

This is the Unclutterer teams’ premium pick, and for very good reason too! The most expensive on our review list, this is a board for professionals or for those wanting a good all-round solution. Great for meetings or in the classroom, presentations, or even in the gym dressing room for outlining rules and tactics! It is double-sided and flips with ease. It is also height adjustable too so children can reach it too.
This review is for the mid-size although there are four other sizes available from 46 x 32 inches to 94 x 46 inches, so which you choose depends on your preference and your space. The Kamelleo Magnetic Erase Board comes in a choice of three colors too – black, blue, or red – so it will fit neatly in your surroundings. We like that the writing space is huge on this size option and you might like that it’s supplied with a flip chart, magnetic eraser, flip chart hooks, and a stain-resistant finish. If you have the budget then you might find this is one of the best whiteboards on our list.
Stands on lockable wheels
Recommended for professional use only
This LuLu Write-On Erase Board is absolutely perfect for children or putting on your office desk or corner desk and it doubles up as a magnetic board too. It’s small in size which means it’s handy for traveling with – perfect for keeping the kiddies happy in the back of the SUV on those summer vacations! It’s a great price at just under $24 and it’s actually quite a good gift too – perhaps you know someone who just got a new desk, a student, or a child that really enjoys learning and drawing? They’ll find this one of the best whiteboards, it comes with its own stand so you don’t need to worry about hanging it on a wall.
Supplied with four animated and colorful magnets, three non-toxic markers, an eraser, and the whiteboard itself. We love the fact that you could have one each for your young students and still have space on the desks and that they are so light they are utterly mobile. Just brilliant and well worth the money spent!

Keeping your notes and information in plain view is important and what’s better than having a dry erase board in the office so everything stays present. This AmazonBasics Dry Erase Easel White Board is great for professional use and there are few options. We reviewed the four-legged version which sits quite solidly in place, but also available is a tripod style with three legs, and another with just two legs. It is height adjustable so can even be used on the floor if you have a few nice cushions to park your bottom on! It is easy to assemble, the height adjustment is simple to use and the legs stay in place nicely. You might like that the board is simply designed with a white melamine writing surface and a scratch-resistant aluminum frame. This one, unlike many on our review list, is not magnetic but the large pen tray keeps things nearby.
Not heavy duty
As far as mini erase boards this neat little Tankee has everything you need except of course a large writing surface. Tankee Mini Dry Ease White Board is a great buy at its price and would be ideal for writing your shopping list or keeping your schedule on. Kids might like it too as it comes with five colorful dry erase markers that have eraser caps, four colored magnets, and of course the dry erase board itself. We think you might use this for a number of applications and it is double-sided so you can keep the writing on one side as long as you need it.
It’s a mobile dry erase board and can be used vertically or horizontally and it comes with enough hooks – two to the top and two to the side – to easily hang it on a wall. Most dry erase boards we have featured on our review list don’t have rounded corners like this one which we think is a great design. We also like that
Easy to clean
Can’t remove hooks
Whilst there are two different sizes (the smaller one is 8.5 x 11 inches) we decided to review this size as it’s similar to the other mini dry erase boards on our list. Kedudes 11 x 14″ Whiteboard comes with magnets if you want to mount on a refrigerator or other magnetic surface. If you prefer to wall mount it on a wall surface then double-sided tape comes with the package (although if you choose this option you might prefer to buy your own velcro or something similar). It’s great for kids, homeschooling, as a drawing easel, or even to write your to-do list or a shopping list on. We think it’s good to have in the office too. The Kedudes whiteboard comes with six colored dry erase markers each with an eraser on its tip.

This is the second Quartet in our review list for dry erase boards and the smaller of the three we tested. It’s also our budget pick – the cheapest on our list! The larger one we reviewed also (see no.5). The review is pretty much the same as the larger one. It comes with a stylish wooden white frame, although also available in red, black, and blue. Quartet 8.5 x 11″ Mini Magnetic Whiteboard has a small writing surface of course and it comes with two magnets and a dry erase marker. It’s versatile and it’s mobile. Used for writing and wiping it can also be used as a bulletin board when you attach the magnets. Hang vertically or horizontally, whatever your preference. It comes with the double-sided stickers so it can be hung on the wall although we would suggest buying some of your own with a stronger adhesive.

Looking for the best dry erase board doesn’t have to be difficult, especially if you are on a low budget. This XBoard Double-Sided Whiteboard isn’t the cheapest on our list but its price is very reasonable. This board is well made and comes with a marker tray, three dry erase markers, four colored magnets, an eraser, and it’s double-sided which is always useful. It’s magnetic so can be used in different ways – as a writing surface and as a bulletin board. It has an aluminum frame and can be wall mounted horizontally or vertically with the accessories supplied for this.

Eraser is tiny!
A nice whiteboard to end our reviews, this is the Quartet Combination Whiteboard which, on one side, has a magnetic whiteboard with a smooth writing surface and the other half is a cork board. It is available in two different sizes and has very subtly curved sides (or top and bottom if you look at it vertically). It is supplied with sticky pads for mounting on a wall or other vertical surface and it includes a dry erase marker and two magnets.

Features To Consider With Whiteboards
Unsure what to look out for when you're looking to buy a whiteboard? How do you know which one you're supposed to pick?
You may already know that there are many features to look out for in a whiteboard and each one is slightly different in its own way, yet they all look surprisingly similar.
Here's a quick guide to help you find the product that suits you and go through what to look out for whether you're planning to use it in school, the office, at home, or even in your local eatery.
While accessories aren't the be-all of buying a whiteboard, they'll get you started when you first receive your package. Typically they'll be supplied with dry erase markers, an eraser, and a few magnets if the whiteboard is magnetic. You might prefer to buy your own supplies in addition to these but do remember that the surface may only be compatible with a certain type or make. If that's the case, you'll find that the marker doesn't even write on the surface and will smudge when you try and clean it off - a bit messy!
Other accessories might be hooks so you can use a larger whiteboard as a flipchart and a pen tray so the pens, eraser, and magnets are neatly kept to hand.
We don't recommend that you use any chemical cleaners on the surface of a whiteboard. If you do you will risk staining the surface as it will absorb the moisture and cause 'ghosting' where the ink can' no longer be removed - nothing worse than a dirty looking stained whiteboard. There is one exception and that would be if your whiteboard has a glass or tempered glass surface.
Erasers are supplied or generally available to buy that are best used on your whiteboard. They are called 'dry erase' because they need just that. Sometimes a dry cloth will work but you're best keeping with the eraser that is recommended.
There are specialist sprays available that have been designed to work on a whiteboard surface. They are cleaners or conditioners. You can also purchase whiteboard wipes. However, there is one brand that we found you can only use related products such as Quartet.
Every productive office needs a whiteboard. Freestanding whiteboards are useful where you have space and need the board to be portable or it needs to be stored after use.
With freestanding boards, more legs are best for sturdiness. Avoid those with cheap plastic frames. If it does happen to get knocked over or dropped in transport, a tougher aluminum frame is best and wooden frames are always stronger than flimsy plastic.
It probably goes without saying that the best whiteboards are magnetic and give you another way to use the board. An ideal purchase if you intend to use it regularly or as a permanent fixture in that you can write on its surface, can apply magnets to hang notes on it, and one that also has flipchart hooks so you have the option to use it as a noticeboard or don't want to completely wipe your text or graphics every time you need a new page.
The major benefits of whiteboards is that they are lightweight and versatile. Mobile boards are ideal for business meetings, training, schooling - and a portable one is ideal when either you don't have space or don't want to hang it on a wall. If you need it to be portable it doesn't have to be small. Lots of freestanding boards come with wheels or if not they are foldable and made it easier to carry. We just don't recommend a whiteboard with a glass surface if you will be frequently transporting it unless it is safe tempered glass, though even then you don't want to knock it during transit and break it while you're on your way to your next meeting or class.
Even smaller whiteboards can be double-sided so if you lack space or simply want a small whiteboard then you can find lapboards, freestanding (like picture frames), and wall-mountable whiteboards from around 8 inches wide.
The fixings are the most important thing if you want to mount your whiteboard on the wall. They need to be well made and tough enough to take the weight of the board so it won't fall off - this is both for safety and to avoid frustration. A light board can even fall off with a little gust of wind if it isn't attached properly.
Invest in some double-sided adhesive pads, strong tape, or even velcro if your chosen board comes with its own as we have found those supplied are not strong enough. These types of boards also are unlikely to have holes or screw fixings.
If you really want to avoid accidents, strong corner fixings are the best and the most secure way of fixing to a wall. Any designed to 'hang' onto a wall like a picture aren't always great and often best avoided.
Q: What's the best way to clean a whiteboard?
As we noted above, avoid chemical or industrial based cleaners and Windex (or similar screen cleaners) should only be used if the surface is glass. An extremely lightly damp cloth can be used but only very occasionally. Ghosting occurs when the ink hasn't been removed as the manufacturer recommends and this means that the writing will stain and can't be removed.
Q: What fixtures do you need to hang a whiteboard?
Corner fittings offer the most secure way of mounting the board on a wall or vertical surface. When doing your research, make sure that fittings and fixtures are supplied and follow the instructions for the safest way of hanging the whiteboard. We would avoid hanging like a picture though - as you use the board and pressure is applied there is every chance that fittings will come loose and damage your wall.
Q: How can I prevent stains and scratches?
Use a dry eraser on a dry erase whiteboard. Clean the eraser and store it in a dry area in between uses. You can buy whiteboard spray cleaner and conditioner, to be used monthly, if you want to enhance the surface and remove any built-up residue. Only use clean products, ensure that pens lids remain on between uses, and clean thoroughly each day. By cleaning it properly and using items recommended by the manufacturer you are also protecting the surface from unnecessary scratching.
Also, aluminum frames should be scratch-proof so it leaves you to only have to look after the writing surface.
So, there you are the ultimate brief bit of advice for buying a whiteboard and keeping it in tip-top condition!
