8 Best Mattresses For Heavy People (Review) In 2021

Last Updated: January 8, 2021

Restorative sleep is essential to all of us. After our daily activities, the body needs to rest and restore itself before awakening for the next busy day. Although this is important to everyone if you are on the heavier side it can be much more important to get a restful night's sleep in a bed that is comforting and soothing during the night. While it's easy to simply buy a replacement or a new mattress that looks good and seems to be designed well, not all mattresses are good for those of us that weigh a little more than the average person.

A typical mattress is designed for those up to around 250 lbs, even those weighing less than that should still look out for suitable mattresses as there is never a 'one size fits all' solution. For beds that are made for two sleeping partners, like the larger Queen size, the weight recommendation is usually 250 lbs per person. With that in mind, if you are looking for a mattress that suits not only your weight but also the way you sleep, you will need to consider extra things when you are looking for the best mattress to match your needs and your body size. It's easy to say that hybrid mattresses or those containing innerspring technology are best for heavy people, so we looked at eight engineered mattresses that are worth researching. We looked at things like thickness, edge support, temperature regulation, cooling abilities, and materials used within the layers.

It is debatable just how 'overweight' being overweight actually is. Depending on who you talk to some might think 200 lbs is heavy, and others might feel that 350 lbs is heavy. Whatever your body size our review list is aimed at the larger body weight of around 300 lbs plus. Here the Unclutterer team looked at our favorites to suit a bigger frame.

So, don't just buy a firm or medium-firm mattress and hope that it lasts the recommended time of around eight years, or that it outlasts its warranty period. Gone are those days! Think about spinal alignment, support and comfort, and how positive your sleep experience can be.

Take a look at our line up of eight mattresses for the heavier person below!

With anti-sag support, support springs that lay deep in the mattress, and a cooling gel layer the WinkBeds Luxury Hybrid Mattress is handcrafted and impressively designed. The anti-sag technology ensures that the edge support is sturdy, allowing you to sit on the edge of the bed and get in and out without it folding and sagging underneath your butt! This area of the mattress has been proven to sag very little over a period of twenty years, although you'll probably want to replace it before that time it just proves that this is a lasting investment.

It's specifically designed with plus-sized people in mind, and WinkBeds' first luxury model to be designed particularly for that reason - for heavier weights and big and tall sleepers. It has an "any reason" guarantee. What this means for you is that should your needs change and you want to replace them, the manufacturer will do that for around 50 percent of the price listed at that time.

The support core has individually wrapped pocketed coils, a Euro pillow top inclusive of gel-infused memory foam, and a top cover that is crafted using Tencel material. Tencel is a natural material so if you like eco-friendly products then this is for you. It is a strong material that is breathable and absorbent too and creates a wonderfully soft upper cover for you to lay on during sleep.

WinkBeds is proud to design and produce engineered mattresses with lifetime guarantees. The hybrid mattresses they create are durable and designed to last.

For those looking for a new mattress with additional support then the Titan Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding has been cleverly designed with extra reinforcement whilst remaining comfortable when you need a good night's sleep. It utilizes heavy-duty coils which are surrounded by two layers of quality foam and promises durability as well as a very impressive claim that the Titan "cannot be broken".

The industrial standard innerspring mattress has a coil core which is a generous 6 inches tall providing your sleepy nights with excellent motion isolation. Its base is made with a high-density foam which reinforces each coil as they become compressed. The 2-inch comfort layer above the coils is built using patented foam giving genuine relief at pressure points. Lastly, the top 1-inch layer is a gel-infused memory foam, quilted for comfort, and conforming to the body soothingly.

As well as what we already said, there's lots more. If you like the idea of a specialty foam mattress for heavy bodies while benefiting from comfort layers and two cooling options then take more of a look at this bed in a box. Lots of layers including high-density foam, TitanFlex™ foam for conforming to your body, and having a base layer that makes up this coil mattress makes this the best bed for heavy people.

The Saatva HD Luxury Mattress is a breathable option and a great mattress for heavier weights, offering support and comfort where it is needed. It's a heavy-duty mattress constructed with a steel metal frame and you can choose to have a base delivered too. It does have a firm feel which eliminates motion transfer (to you and us that means you can't feel much when your sleeping partner moves!).

Saatva caters to every type of sleeper, including those with a firm feel for heavier weights. The plus-size bed works well for tall or plus size and it works well if you sleep hot. Saatva uses Eco-friendly materials that are fantastic for those looking for environmentally friendly products. They pride themselves on a multitude of design options that help with each sleeping position, making it good for a pleasant night's sleep.

The only thing that we realised was that for those who can't sleep with motion transfer - ie if you can't sleep very well with your sleeping partner moving around during the night- the sleeping position of each person can really make your sleep difficult.

The Helix company always has a seasonal sale, and that's not a bad thing when it comes to budgeting at the moment. The Helix PLUS Mattress has been designed for a good night s sleep for heavier sleepers and comes with a firm memory foam comfort layer as well as being constructed as an innerspring mattress using sturdy coils, individually wrapped, which helps with reinforcing those who feel like they might be on the heavy side.

The Unclutterer team likes the comfort layers. We like that the Helix brand comes with a number of options and offers a sturdy support core with options for soft and firm depending on lighter or heavier sleepers. The Helix PLUS seemed to have a great overall performance which felt really good and seemed to conform to our body with a good comfort layer on top of an innerspring mattress and a good support base.

We also liked that you do feel like you are sleeping on the actual mattress rather than being absorbed with another option, such as a memory foam mattress. Had a good balance of comfort and support for plus-sized testers.

Medium-firm seems like a great option and the pocketed coils combine well with the foam mattress for heavy bodies, with the weight limit designed for those around 300 lbs.

The Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress seems to please pretty much a wide range of sleepers, including plus-sized, taller, heavy sleepers and those simply looking for a mattress with a promise of comfort and support. We found that the internal pocketed coils meant that heat from the body was taken away, better than using what some of us have done over time which is doing the temporary thing and get a mattress topper, not great if you generate heat during the night.

This is a pretty soft and comforting mattress, so isn't the best if you want something firm. This one will hug your body rather than you sleeping on top of the mattress, and it really isn't the cheapest option so you need to know what you like before you buy.

This model seems to do all it says. So even though it isn't the cheapest of all those featured in our lineup, it seems to be a good choice for back and stomach sleepers, plus-sized bodies, and those who really do like a memory foam mattress that cradles the body.

It seems to limit motion transfer making it easier for heavy sleepers and sleep partners to get a good night of rest even when the other side of the mattress is fidgeting!

If you like pressure relief and a comforting, almost hugging, feeling, then this works well. It isn't medium-firm, if pretty soft, but as a mattress for heavy people that prefer something soft and huggy, this one we would highly recommend if you have a low budget.

Spandex/latex mattress for pressure relief and the poly-foam separates the pocketed coils that offer comfort and support to heavy sleepers, side sleepers, and those that want a hybrid mattress that offers endless benefits when it comes to sleep.

This is one Hybrid mattress that has edge support and is built for heavy or tall people. Individually pocketed springs and pocket foam helps to retain its shape. Memory foam combined with sturdy coils helps with pressure relief. The Unclutterer team thinks that this Big Fig is brilliant for back sleepers.

The Unclutterer team loves the Saatva brand and we can't be biased. But Saatva Loom & Leaf Mattress is designed from organic and eco-friendly cotton along with thick layers of memory foam making this mattress so comfortable that it just fits with the manufacturers' way of designing the best mattress for everyone, including those with heavy body weight.

We looked at the firmness, the ability to provide pressure relief, and the edge support. It isn't like the Big Fig we featured earlier or the Helix PLUS although this could well be the mattress of your dreams.

The Unclutterer team likes the high-density comfort layers which conform to your body. It relieves pressure points for heavy people and tall people. It also has high-density memory foam that offers pressure relief and provides relief from back pain.

It has gel-infused foam too, as we have found in our tests this offers a cooling effect so that the heat from your body is diffused during a night s sleep. The organic material is antimicrobial and non-toxic, providing you with a memory foam mattress that is hypo-allergenic so healthy for you, and healthy for the planet.

What is going on under this cover is pretty special. Four layers of cooling gel-infused foam including poly-foam. It is a firm and comforting mattress that gives support and comfort even for side sleepers and stomach sleepers.

Overall, it's cozy, contours to your body, and offers a pleasant cushioned support for side sleepers needing pressure relief on the shoulders and hips.

We absolutely love white glove delivery. If you feel you are one of the heavy people or of the taller stature then leave the delivery guys or gals to get your bed in a box all the way up to your bedroom, set it up, and leave you to get comfy and cozy.

With the inclusion of individually wrapped coils, the foundation of the standard Avocado Green Mattress offers pocketed coils that give a firm feel, especially good for a heavy person looking for all-over body support. Opt for the pillow-top version for a much more plush feeling.

The Avocado mattress is handmade in Los Angeles, US, so this keeps down the carbon footprint as the company doesn't deliver elsewhere across the world - it is Climate Neutral Certified and is the first mattress brand to have achieved this certification. What this means for us all is that the firm is recognized as being committed to decarbonization and that they offset the carbon effects of their processes willingly without compromise.

Its layers incorporate cotton, wool, and latex each of which has its very own unique benefit that when combined offers comfort and support for those of the larger stature and even those who find they sleep hot.

We think the Avocado Green mattress does live up to the hype. We think this for a number of reasons. Well, for one, we are fans much like you of the organic style of home furnishings which are promised to be eco-friendly. To those of us who read 'organic' as being expensive, Avocado Green is actually available at a surprisingly affordable price point.

We are promised, and it didn't disappoint, that it has superior back support and impressive durability meaning even for the heavier person or those wanting a plus size mattress it is pretty long-lasting.

Who else offers an entire years' worth of trial nights and a 25-year warranty? We don't actually know any other brand to compare the Avocado Green mattresses to.

Whatsmore, the latex offers a cooling ability to help with a comfortable and restful sleep. The organic wool works with this to wick away moisture and repel dust mites. And, the organic cotton is not blended with polyester at all.

Just to highlight that the standard option is a gentle-firm but there is an alternative if you prefer a softer more huggable feel which includes a Euro-style pillow top option but even this one isn't too plushy or sinkable. It is ideal for combination sleepers so side sleepers, as well as stomach and back sleepers, will find this firm yet gentle on pressure points all over your body.

Features To Consider With Mattresses For Heavy People

Considering a number of things when choosing mattresses for those of us on the heavier side is something we think we all know but there's usually something that we overlook. We came up with a few things to take a look at when choosing a mattress for heavy people:

Because whether we are carrying a few extra lbs or not, we all deserve a deep and restful night's sleep...

the best mattress for heavy people

Quality Materials

Do you need a fully organic mattress that helps to relieve symptoms from allergens and asthma? Or do you simply want a high-density mattress that uses high-quality layers of materials that are best for supporting a heavy body? Perhaps you are a warm or hot sleeper and want specially designed materials incorporated into your new mattress to help regulate your temperature during the night.

Mattresses come in all types of designs, some with three layers of foam, some with seven, and some with individually wrapped coils. You'll find them made with memory foam, gel-infused foam, latex or springs - or a combination of some, or all of those. The mattress' firmness, thickness, edge strength, and supportability will be determined by which materials are used and how they form the mattress internally.

Thickness

We often overlook the importance of the thickness of a new or replacement mattress. As a heads up, for those on the larger side it's a good idea to look for a mattress thicker than 11 inches but anything around 12 inches or thicker is ideal for pressure points, reducing the chance of compression and also sagging and wrinkling over time.

Even thick mattresses might not have the most ideal edge support though, we'll mention that below.

Firmness

Most mattress brands will have a selection of firmness options. We found that it was as simple as looking at the website or promotional material where there is a simple firmness rating to help people realize how supportive the mattress is, and how it can help with spinal alignment.

You will find that the firmness ratings start at soft, then medium soft to medium, medium-firm, firm, and everywhere in between. This is where you need to consider spending plenty of time on research.

Think about whether you want to sink into your new mattress or you prefer more support as if you are sleeping on top of the mattress surface rather than in it!

Remember, what you liked twenty years ago might have changed. As we age and grow, our needs can change dramatically and the need for a deep, sound and restful sleep is essential to your overall health and wellbeing.

Sleeping Positions

While some might prefer a soft mattress they may not be ideal if you are looking for firm support to the back. We all sleep differently - there are people who are side sleepers, combination sleepers, those who prefer to sleep on the stomach, and people who only rest on their back.

While it seems like common sense, we'll mention it anyway. Think about your sleeping partner too when considering your new mattress, even a combined weight of around 360 lbs is considered a little on the heavy side so it isn't just that you might be one of those people on the heavier side, it's the combined weight of both of you. Some split mattresses cater for a certain weight limit on each side of the mattress so each can move independently and these can sometimes be customized on each half to suit the firmness of the person sleeping on that side.

As a rule of thumb, you should be looking at the most suitable mattress that offers enough support. It should be able to align the spine - even if you are a side sleeper you need support zones, especially at the shoulders and hips. Getting a good night's sleep is a little more important than not waking up tired. It's about your overall well being, avoiding aches and pains, improving concentration, and reducing stress levels.

the best mattress for heavy people

Cooling and Temperature Regulation

Waking up during the night in a hot sweaty mess is not the most pleasant way to a good sleep experience. It can be pretty common during a hot season but if you are suffering during the winter nights too then you should have a look at a mattress that incorporates cooling properties. Where a memory foam mattress can retain heat, if you consider yourself as a hot sleeper then you might prefer a mattress with coils that let air circulate.

That said, there are specialist mattresses that come infused with gels that are designed to cool the body and regulate temperature while you sleep. Some mattresses, like the Helix Plus, come with a breathable Tencel cover which aids temperature regulation and helps prevent people from overheating during the night. Look out for small air vents on the side of the mattress too.

Edge Support

Rather than having the edges of your new or replacement mattress sag when you get in, get out, or sit on the edge of the bed then consider those that have specially designed sturdy edge support, perhaps like the Big Fig. Those with good edge support are also ideal for people who sleep near the edge of the bed.

Couples Considerations

Running around after the kids all day, spending long shifts at work, or studying takes it out of you. Your body needs rest and relaxation during sleep so that when you awake you feel restored and refreshed. It's all great thinking about a mattress just for one but as a couple, you need to think about your sleeping partner as well. If one of you moves around and fidgets during the night or one sleeps hot and the other doesn't, thinking about a split bed can be a brilliant thing.

You both deserve a good sleep and while one might like a sumptuous mattress to sink into, your other half might want or need, something entirely different. Some brands may offer the choice of two halves of the mattress being different in firmness. If not, even just having a split cal mattress can mean that if one of you usually disturbs the other during the night, there's more motion control so that the person on the other side of the bed won't necessarily be interrupted by the other person's fidgety behavior in bed. A split mattress may be marginally more expensive but hopefully, the budget doesn't stand in your way of getting the night's sleep that you both deserve.

Foundation

We all need a bed that's both supportive and comfortable. For heavier people, that is likely going to mean that you need one made with high-density foams, an innerspring mattress with plenty of pocketed coils, and most certainly a sturdy bed frame or foundation that has a suitable weight limit.

When placed on a strong foundation a mattress designed for obese people or plus-sized sleepers can work the way it is designed - to support heavier people whilst providing alternative benefits such as pressure relief and proper spinal alignment.

If you're unsure that your current foundation or bed frame is suitable for your new mattress designed for larger people, take a look at the additional options the brand you are looking at an offer. Take a look at the WinkBed as well as the mattress you can buy it directly from WinkBeds plus it has the option of buying a heavy-duty bed frame to support the heavy-duty mattress options, as do many others.

Mattress For Heavy People FAQ

Q: Do mattresses have weight limits?

A:

Typically, a conventional mattress is designed to support people of around 250 lbs, for larger mattresses like a King or Queen that extends to 250 lbs each side of the bed therefore these sizes are better for couples or supporting the weight of someone up to 500 lbs.

While each brand is different, those that have specifically designed mattresses for heavier people will outline the weight limit of each mattress. But, don't forget that a mattress for a heavy person or people needs a sturdy foundation also.

Q: What is the best type of mattress for a heavy person?

A:

A coil mattress with individual coils, and plenty of them, is super for a heavy person. They can feel very firm although some brands offer the choice of adding a Euro-style topper to add a little more softness. If you think the best mattress for you is made with memory foam layers, they usually feel medium firm - look out for a dense foam layer.

In summary, an innerspring mattress with coils does offer much more support. We would recommend taking a look at WinkBeds, Big Fig, or the Saatva HD for those weighing around 300 lbs.

the best mattress for heavy people

Q: What thickness of the mattress is best for heavier sleepers?

A:

While it's pretty easy to overlook the thickness of a new mattress because you are looking more at the materials, layers, and firmness, the thickness is especially important for those of us on the heavier side. Most experts would say to look at a mattress thickness of 11, preferably 12 inches upwards. This level should offer comfort, pressure relief, support, and should prevent sagging over time.

Q: Can extra weight cause sleep apnea?

A:

Disturbance during sleep can be a factor in being overweight. While we aren't experts it's clear through a bit of research on expert and medical websites that sleep apnea can be caused by extra weight - or, you could say that losing weight can have a positive impact on the symptoms of sleep apnea.
