The best HDMI cables are those which are going to suit your particular needs. It might be that you want to watch a variety of wildlife documentaries on a state-of-the-art 8K TV, in which case you're going to need an expensive HDMI; an Ultra High-Speed HDMI, to be precise. For the majority of needs, be it TV or gaming, the best HDMI cable will be one that comes with a lifetime warranty and is a mere 3 feet long.
If you need a long HDMI cable then you might be looking at an 'active' or 'optical' HDMI cable, as opposed to a regular 'passive' HDMI cable. Make sure you know what you need to get before you get it; 10 feet, long distances (extension cable), HDMI 2 0, HDMI 2 1, HDMI cables for 4K TV, a premium make, or just a budget brand. Keep in mind that technology is changing all the time, so the reviews you will read below just show the new HDMI cables at the time of writing. In a year or two, new versions are inevitable.
Don't panic, though. The vast majority of new HDMI cables are 'backward' compatible, ie. they will work with all the older versions that have come out over the years. Expensive HDMI cables are coming down in price all the time, so you might be able to get a premium HDMI cable at a knock-down price if you just wait another six months. 18 Gbps should suffice for now, though, and a standard HDMI is still a worthwhile investment if the expensive HDMI cables are currently out of your price range.

Features To Consider With HDMI Cables
HDMI Version
HDMI, otherwise known as 'High-Definition Multimedia Interface' is an ongoing technology that has gone through many versions, eg. 1.0, 1.4, 2.0. More often than not, the latest version will work 'backward' so that it is compatible with earlier versions. This is not always the case, however, so read the specifications carefully. If you have specific requirements, eg. 4K video, then again, study the spec and ensure your version supports this. For most purposes, though, your HDMI version shouldn't matter too much.
Cable Material
If your HDMI cable needs to be angled through some awkward turns, the best HDMI cables will have been laboratory stress-tested to withstand thousands of bendings, and can even be made from special double braided premium nylon and 32WG copper wire, which will last for a very long time. Gold-plated cables sound good, and it is true that they're probably less prone to rust over time; then again, how many of your non gold-plated cables and wires have ever rusted? The fact is, HDMI is a digital connection that will either work or not, and it tends to remain in dry, interior conditions so rust or corrosion is extremely unlikely. It is perhaps more important to check that the HDMI cable is backward compatible, so all your older equipment doesn't end up being obsolete.
Connector Material
Certain HDMI cables have a round cylinder at either end of the cable, which is called an EMI ring. It is designed to prevent interference, from device to device. You need to take care, though, that your EMI ring or 'ferrite bead' (sometimes called 'ferrite choke') isn't too big for the hole you wish to pass it through. It may be better to purchase an HDMI cable that doesn't possess this. Alternatively, you can get 'clip-on' EMI rings, which can function well enough, especially when using extra-long cables that need that extra support.
Length
To decide on the right length HDMI cable, ensure your measurements are accurate. In general, anywhere from six to twenty-five feet is sufficient, for a 'passive cable', while you'll need a little longer than this if you want to install fiber optic HDMI cable (used to amplify the signal over longer distances). 'Active cables' can work over longer distances; transmitting a 1080i signal up to 49 feet, and tend to be more expensive.
Resolution
Computer monitors and TVs nearly all tend to have HDMI, these days, which is useful because it facilitates audio. If you want to get the best resolution from a computer screen to a TV screen, HDMI is definitely your best option. However, TV screens often have HDMI 1.4 connections, which don't go over 3,820x2,160-pixel resolution at 30 frames per second. So, if your computer monitor is 4K then you'll need HDMI 2.0 to make this work, and perhaps a newer TV to facilitate this.
Types of HDMI Cables
Optical
Optical HDMI cables have similar connection ends to regular HDMI cables, but can carry signals over a far longer distance, and can sometimes be made extra thin. They don't require external power and can transmit both audio and video.
Active
Active HDMI cables possess amplifying circuitry in one of the connection heads, which is useful when using longer cables, to maintain a stable signal. If it is not internally powered, you may connect to a power source using a small connecting cable via a USB or AC adapter power source. Both optical and active HDMI cables tend are 'directional', that is, one end is labeled 'source' of '1' while the other 'TV' or '2'. It must be connected appropriately or it won't work.
Wireless
It sounds crazy but they do exist; you first need to connect a transmitter to the HDMI port of a video source, and then a receiver to the HDMI port of a TV. Voila! It can have its uses; however, it won't allow you to use it in a variety of different ways; for example, it won't support 4K, so it might not help in terms of video quality. They only work with a single transmitter or receiver each time; multiple connections are prohibitively difficult and expensive. Unless you're trying to send a cable signal to your basement, or drastically tidy up an entertainment center, it might not be worth it, depending on your budget.
HDMI Cable FAQ
Q: What are HDMI cables?
HDMI means 'High-Definition Multimedia Interface', and is a means whereby one device can be connected to another; very often an HD TV to something like an Xbox, Blu-ray player or similar device. It permits a data signal to go from one to the other so that you can enjoy the benefits of one screen but on another, usually larger screen.
Q: What do HDMI 1.4, 2.0, and 2.1 Actually Mean?
A “standard” HDMI cable usually transmits a 1080i or 720p video. The subsequent versions support different things:
- HDMI 1.4 - 4K resolution usually requires high-speed HDMI cables, which are designed to transmit video resolutions, 1080p to 4K with a deep range of color. Regardless of whether you have HDR, High-Speed HDMI cables are required.
- HDMI 2.0 offers everything that HDMI 1.4 offers, but with increased bandwidth and the capacity to present a larger range of colors. It has a bandwidth of 18 Gigabits per second this can enable 4K resolution at 60 FPS (frames per second).
- HDMI 2.0a offers all that 2.0 offers, only with various types of HDR. This produces a deeper, more engaging array of colors. You don't have to have this for 4K; it's all about the quality of resolution.
- HDMI 2.1 permits dynamic HDR, quicker refresh rates, as well as a higher bandwidth than the above.
Q: Do I need a special HDMI for 4K?
All of the HDMI cables mentioned above should support 4K, so you don't need a special HDMI for 4K TV; it is more about depth of color and quality of resolution. HDMI cables that are labeled as 'high speed' should all be able to handle 4K signals up to three meters. If you require longer lengths then 'active' HDMI cables are recommended, since they contain a processing chip which aids signals to travel without interruption or loss of quality.
Q: Does smart TV need HDMI cable?
Smart TVs show online content via your broadband router; Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Ethernet can be useful for maintaining a stable connection, but for longer distances Wi-Fi might be preferable. You will need an HDMI 2.0 cable if you've purchased a 4K UHD TV or Ultra HD Blu-ray player. This is because of the elevated frame-rates of 4K, which HDMI 1.4 can't do justice to. If your Smart TV happens to be internet-connected then you can get an HDMI cable with Ethernet incorporated into it, thus reducing the number of cables you'll need, overall.
Q: Is HDMI with Ethernet better?
Increasing numbers of home entertainment systems have a specific port for Ethernet cables, allowing networking to occur between other devices and routers. There is such a thing a HDMI Ethernet Channel, which integrates whatever you can ordinarily do with an Ethernet cable into one single HDMI cable. The main bonus is convenience since you'll need fewer cables coming out of your Smart TV. Other than that, there's no real advantage, because having a separate HDMI and Ethernet cable, respectively, would still allow you to do all the same kinds of things. Some HDMI 1.4 cables will explicitly state whether they're able to combine Ethernet, too; most regular HDMI cables don't have this dedicated data channel, so you'll more than likely need HDMI 2.0.
Q: Is there a difference between HDMI and High-Speed HDMI cables?
There is no such thing as a specific 4K HDMI cable; that said, there are different capacities that different HDMI cables have, and depending on whether or not you want just a basic TV signal or want to play the latest, high-tech video games at 30 frames per second (or more), you'll need to know the following:
- Standard HDMI: a maximum of 720p or 1080i resolution – 30Hz refresh rate
- High Speed HDMI: a max of 4K resolution (including 1080p) – 30Hz
- Premium High Speed HDMI: a max of 4K resolution with high dynamic range (HDR) – 60Hz
- Ultra High Speed HDMI: a max of 10K resolution with HDR at a 120Hz refresh rate (4K video refreshes at up to 240Hz)
A Premium High Speed HDMI cable should suffice for anything that a 4K TV will demand it. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable (e.g., 8K TVs) will be expensive because such technology is cutting-edge and more and more products are coming out to take advantage of it, as we speak.
