I have a fireplace "lip" like the "before" picture at the link below:

It pretty long - extending ~3ft to the right and left of the fireplace. I'd
like to use it for seating or similar, but unsure how - any suggestions or
directions you can point me in? Otherwise, I may just do what that other fellow did and be rid of it to create a little more floorspace :)

I have a nice thick foam cushion covered in a washable slipcover that makes our fireplace area into additional seating. Ours is over 8 feet long. When we have a fire, we pull the cushion off and put it on the floor in front of the fireplace for seating for the kids while they cozy up. It works well, but I have toyed with the idea of doing away with it altogether if we replaced the woodburning fireplace with a gas log. You need to look into safety codes. I think there has to be 12 inches from the floor from an open flame, so unless you plan to put tile or stone or brick or some on your floor, that lip may be serving a safety function too.

Just this week my DH tore out all the brick surrounding our fireplace. It went from floor to ceiling with a brick mantle that stuck out 2' and a hearth that stuck out 2.5'and was over 7' long. It was painted white. We had 2 cushions on the hearth for extra seating but ultimately decided it was just too big so out it came. We plan to put tile around the opening, a mantle and not have a hearth. The tile will go straight down to the floor. Retro style.
It's unbelievable how much it uncluttered our room! It seems so much bigger.
It's also unbelievable what a mess it made!
