Geochica, is there one or two items that you and your husband would like? Then when anyone talks about taking more things, you could say, for instance, "No thank you, we don't want the sideboard. We do love looking at Grandpa's clock every day and thinking about him!" Just keep putting the focus back on what you DID take and how much you enjoy and appreciate it. This works well for me with my mom, however she is very easily distracted. YMMV.

Chacha1, back to the original question, I have some "heirlooms" which I really enjoy. However, they are all things that I would like anyway, even if they didn't have any family or sentimental meaning. I try not to accept anything that I wouldn't buy for myself. Which reminds me, there are some ornate silver-plated bowls that I accepted in a weak moment that need to get out of my house!

Charity - my grandfather had that exact hideous bronze fly ashtray when I was a little boy. I thought it was AWESOME! Of course, I wouldn't let it without 100 feet of my house now :)
