I need a way to weekly remind myself that I need to water the plants (and probably some other things in the near future), is there some online service or something that can deal with this for me? Maybe by sending me a mail on e.g. each wednesday?

Kevin, maybe you could get rid of the plants and not worry about needing a reminder. Less is more!
I use Outlook Tasks. I set a reoccurring task that reminds me every Saturday. It pops up on my screen once a week and once I complete the activity I mark it off.
You could use something like the calendar feature in Google's (free) Gmail. I used to write a family member twice a week and used the calendar feature to send me email reminders to do that. It was great! And free -- can't beat that.
You can set up the reminder as an event (pick a day and time) and ask Google Calendars to email you a reminder at that time. For recurring tasks (events), just mark it as an event (task) that repeats every week (you can be much more specific than this too -- it's a nice service).

I also use Google Calendar for reminders like this. I set them up in advance and then I get an email to remind me. I've just started using scrybe for all my calendaring and it does the same (and is a better calendar overall than Google). However scrybe is invitation only. If anyone wants and invite, feel free to let me know.
I have used a service called Memo To Me. It sends reminders by email and you can set them up to be recurring, one time, etc. It's free, although I think the email has a small ad at the bottom.

@Sky There are a lot of things I would like to get rid of, but I love plants! They're good for you, therefore :)
Cozi.com has a great, free service. Calendar, to-do lists, shopping lists, family journal, photos... all on one page. And you can assign items to certain people if you wish.
Also, there's a toll-free number you can call that will actually read your shopping list to you! Of course, everything can be accessed by mobile as well.
You can have the reminders emailed to you or sent to your phone. Everything is free. Pretty cool!
reqall.com and their associated applications do a great job at reminding you all sorts of things. Even recurring ones :) Im going to have it help me remember some of my new year's resolutions.
I use google calendar, too. I'm sure some of the others mentioned are great also. I just like the simplicity of the GC and the fact that it syncs with the other google things, like my email. I can see the today's calendar from my inbox screen, for example.
