This weekend my plan is start - and hopefully finish - shredding old bills and papers. When I moved into my house almost 7 years ago, I thought that I had to keep EVERYTHING. Now, I've realized that it doesn't matter what my light bill was 7 years ago. Randomly throughout each of the last few years, I've said that I was gonna shred everything, but never bought a shredder. The reasons being possibly forgetting when I was out shopping, or having an expense that needed attention. I finally bought a good one a few weeks ago. I'm going to put in a good movie, grab my bill/paper folders, and have a good time! And when it's all over, I'll have more closet space!!

good work! I keep a big heavyduty shredder near my desk, it gets good use.

excellent plan indeed.
there are guidelines online ( here is one: http://lifeorganizers.com/Office-Home-Office/The-Organized-Files/Records-Retention.html ) for what needs to be kept and for how long.....but nobody needs 7 year old electricity bills hanging around (unless you run a business from home).
we have discussed filing systems here a bit too.....those threads might give you some ideas on how to deal with the incoming paper.Posted 4 months ago # -
my weekend uncluttering plan is to cook a lot (decluttering produce!) and work on some costumery (decluttering projects!). I would love to say I will also get some of the tax-prep data entry done but after the highly overcommitted week I've had, that is looking doubtful. :-)

I have similar paperwork/shredding/filing on my to-do list this weekend, along with finishing the CD's, ripping any music I want to save, and my closets (big one with clothing and small one stuffed with toiletries).
All this is assuming I am not out picking up horses in need of rescue/transport due to the insane rain and flooding hitting Oregon!

Poodle, I love this idea for a topic! Weekends are really the time to tackle those larger projects, so it is good to set a goal for that time...and I could use some accountability, too.
Also, it sounds like super duper fun to shred papers while watching a good movie. Awesome plan.
This weekend, my uncluttering plans are to:
1) Clean the hall closet - this is our "out of sight, out of mind" area, and if an item isn't put in its proper, permanent home, it will find its way into the hall closet eventually. I need to put everything back in place, keeping an eye out for items to unclutter while I am at it. I bet I'll find a couple items to unclutter.
2) Finish scanning my sentimental papers. I meant to finish this in 2011 as part of a larger project, and failed spectacularly as things got busy! But life goes on, and I still want to get the project done.
3) Unclutter the "gnat tasks" from my to do list. I don't recall where I heard that phrase, but "gnat tasks" are those little tasks that only take 15 minutes or so to complete, but that can cause stress by hanging around and remaining undone for long periods of time.
I'll check in on Sunday and let you know how it went! :)

Great topic! Now let me see...
- Get a couple of bags of stuff out to the charity shop.
- Return/unshop a long-sleeved t-shirt that didn't fit.
- De-pill a cashmere cardigan and handwash it.
- Remember to return an item to the friend who comes to dinner on Saturday.
- Tweak my budget in preparation for meeting with the bank on Monday. Objective: renegotiate mortgage interest rates and set up a consistent savings plan. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Continue my daily closet decluttering. :) The following weekend, though, I'll be wrapping it up and preparing to launch my February goal (TBD).

the plan here today is to unpack the small odds and ends we bought from IKEA last week (replacement glasses, a new chopping board, a draining lid cover) and wash and put them in their places.
i didn't really need a new chopping board, but this one has a great design....it covers the whole bench and has a lip so you can scrape the chopped stuff directly into a bowl.
we also need to store the bathroom fittings somewhere unobtrusive for the next three weeks until the renovations ommence.Posted 4 months ago # -
This is the weekend I wade through the mail pile.

great idea! this weekend is dedicated to renovate the place. three craftsmen arrived one hour ago and started their work. i plan to screw a new shelf together and finish the last sewing tasks.

Ta-da! I did #2 on the list - to finish scanning my sentimental papers. I did have to file a folder of sentimental papers that would require a flatbed scanner to scan (instead of my mini-scansnap), but I'm not going to worry about that one file folder at this point.
Also, the overall PROJECT I am doing is not finished...the scanning was step #1...but again, I will leave that to another day. Can't do everything all at once.
On to the hall closet and the gnat tasks!

Ikea solved a problem I had after Christmas. I asked hubby for a very nice frying pan (remembering the discussion boards about cookware last month!). He ended up giving me THREE! I was able to get large S-hooks from Ikea to hang the pans from my home-made rack on the wall (made of wire grids from former storage cubes).
The huge glass lids were another issue, however. They lay on the counter until I found a deep plastic storage bin at Ikea that slides perfectly into a narrow lower cabinet. The metal lids from my Saladmaster set fit upright into a metal meatloaf pan on one end of the bin and keep the glass lids from sliding back when I pull out the bin. Yayy!

My plans changed drastically this weekend! First I had planned to make another big dent in the Closet of Doom (we're really starting to get somewhere, so I'm motivated to keep going). Then I got a cold and decided I didn't need to do anything at all except recover. Then, our apartment management sent a note saying that pretty much everyone's balconies are in violation of the agreements on what can be there, and things need to be cleared off by Monday or we will get fined. (I do see their point, I just think they are being a bit too zealous in what is not allowed.)
Anyway, my project for today was to get rid of things on the balcony that I meant to get rid of anyway - a dirty old wooden shelf and my husband's old beat-up bike. Tomorrow I just need to rehome some plant pots and I'll be done.

jlw - what CAN you keep out there? sounds overly zealous indeed, but i guess rules are rules and they are allowed to enforce them.
i had great plans to finish homing some random items, but cut my left index finger badly this morning while slicing bread. so i've been puttering at one-handed tasks since. you only realize how valuable your fingers are when you damage one of them.

Well, they say "approved patio furniture" without saying what that means. They don't even mention potted plants as being okay (I think they are but I'm going to ask to find out). But they don't want "unapproved" furniture, bikes, clothes drying racks, or the shades that some people have to keep the sun off a bit (personally I like the shades). I do understand they want things to look nice but really, what's wrong with bikes? Still, it gave me a nice kick in the pants to get rid of some things.
@grey - ouch! Hope your finger heals soon.

whew!
got the last of the while-we-were-on-holiday mail sorted.
now we can start the week all caught up from our two weeks off.Posted 4 months ago # -
This weekend I moved all the files on the Server hard drive to an ordinary hard drive.
Server Hard drive is dying and now that it's empty. I will be breaking it and throwing it out.

I fear the day is slipping away from me and I haven't even looked at the hall closet, yet. So that weekend goal may remain undone...we'll see if I get a second wind.

I didn't get everything done that I planned on. Saturday's housework and laundry took longer than I thought it would. But, I at least got old bank statements shredded - even though I'm sure there's more lurking around somewhere. But, I hope to be able to do some after work a few nights this week.
