I'm watching 27 Dresses right now to chill a bit before going to bed and just remembered this thread. I'm at the scene where Kevin discovers the closet filled with bridesmaid's dresses and it is so hilarious, especially since I know I'll end up laughing so hard that tears will start dripping soon. Seriously, the concept of 'the best part is you can shorten it and wear it again' - WHO invented it? Very rarely does anyone use anything wedding related that screams 'Wedding!' again, unless they're the groom or his guys.
I got married in 2009 and still haven't sold the dress, tried once though but will have to make that a serious project of the Summer months, because our walk-in is very small and although it's hanging from a rod mounted to the ceiling it fills up a huge deal. It's a lovely dress and I loved wearing it, but made up my mind about selling it even before having chosen this particular model. There are several reasons:
- Wedding dresses are in and out of style the same way as 'normal' clothing is
- If I'm lucky enough to get kids, I might not have a daughter
- If I do have a daughter, she might not be the same size
- She might not like the style
- She might want to wear her 'own' dress the same way as I would never have picked the style that my mother wore on her day
- Financial; it was an expensive dress and I paid it from my own money, but reasoned that if I get even half of the amount back then it would have cost me about the same as a rented dress (and I've heard some horror stories of them smelling of sweat after a while when the bride has danced a bit and gotten warm :( )
- The thought of someone else spending their big day in this dress makes me happy
