I'd like to unclutter my life of 50-75 home-recorded VHS tapes (like movies and such), and a friend glowed about this website :-) I live in the Seattle area and found a VHS tape recycler in Illinois (www.InterconSolutions.com), but besides paying to ship the tapes there, I get to pay a small recycling fee.
Does anyone know of a recycler closer to Seattle, or another use for these besides filling up landfills?

Maybe you could find art students who would like to use them for something? With that many tapes, they could do something pretty neat.
I have seen dresses made out of the tape woven together. Although there still would be a lot of waste from the VHS to dispose of.

After a friend digitalized and decluttered her video tapes, she used them for decoration on her Halloween party: Giant black shiny spider webs woven across the ceilings! Of course, they do fill the landfill too now, but that was a fun detour on the way :o)
I don't think there really is another "use" for old tapes, but here is a place to start finding where to dump them:

Thank you all for the creative ideas! I think I'll save one or two to put the tape in my fruit trees to scare off the birds (the Halloween party idea sparked that :-) ). It turns out there's another place that recycles them very close to me, though they are set up to send their recycling boxes anywhere in the country for sending to the proper recycling locations, and it does me no extra good to live near headquarters :-} Either way, they are a worthwhile organization that I want to let people know about: http://greendisk.com/ They have several solutions for technotrash!
