Very funny Bandicoot. I am not sure what a spork is. i would love to know but I won't tell DH. It is funny how the man who "hates shopping" never seems to have a problem buying camping gear, maps and kitchen utensils. He was sent into David Jones to buy a new shirt on Sunday and came out with a packet of imported French cultured butter.

One thing my new little house is blessed with is ample storage. From a large walkin pantry to a big linen press in the laundry and builtin wardrobes in all 3 bedrooms. I does lack some form of mudroom/coat cupboard though. We are moving to a much colder climate, on 5 acres and figure we will need something like this. The laundry is on the other side of the house from the entry and sheds(garage) so this wont work. I want a mudroom/coat thingy!!!!!
And Bandicoot - I'm the one in our house that insisted we buy a new tent - a four room thing that we have used for all of 2 nights, 2 years ago!!! Maybe now that we'll have a little bit of free time together, we'll be able to explore the NSW central west with our tent!!!!Posted 1 year ago # -
@Jackthetiger, I'm thinking the butter may prevent him from looking good in the shirt (which he didn't buy) LOL.
I am sympathetic to all the storage quandries! And I agree with @chacha that furniture that actually works is important. We remodeled our kitchen and have a luxurious amount of space. I wanted to keep it open and not fill it all up, so I "let go" of many items anyway. I haven't missed anything. In fact, I have one corner cabinet full of small appliances and I almost never open it. (maybe I don't cook enough!)

jackthetiger: a spork is a combined spoon and fork with some serrations on one edge so you can use it to cut stuff too. Ingenious things, we have about 8 of them :)
I just spotted a titanium version, I only hope my dh doesn't twig to its existence!

Rosa: I can identify with the electrical outlet thing, when we had this house rewired we only put in 2 per room, and that's inadequate, plus they're all in the wrong places!
My dream house will have a room devoted to books with built-in shelves, a fire and a comfy sofa :) And a mudroom. And a utility room, I would love a utility room rather than a corner wedged between my bathroom and kitchen with just space enough for a washing machine. And a dressing room :) Not much to ask for! Actually, our house has plenty of storage compared with some people, I just need to rejig it constantly as our family changes and I think of new ways of using it.Posted 1 year ago # -
Hmmm, we built our house ourselves, and it isn't perfect! Of course, we did it in the late 70s early 80s and the computer/electronics craze hadn't hit. We have not got enough electric outlets in any place except the small entry addition (which we built in 1997) and DH's shop. I have extension cords and surge protected strips everywhere. At least DH finally got around to mounting them in places where they are not obvious, in the way, or getting kicked.
Our house is small, which I like, and has a decent closet in every room. Adding a 200 sf entry really brought everything together - like now the coat closet is by the door, not in the middle of the house. The used-to-be-coat-closet we had fitted with a pantry unit (custom built, and it's right off the kitchen) which gave me the additional pantry/appliance storage I needed. My original kitchen had no room for tall or wide things - like frying pans and liquor bottles....

@pkilmain: Lol, a 200 sqf entry? That's half our apartment :D How big is your house?
@Jackthetiger: a spork is a fork and spoon in the same piece.'
Edit: oops, just noticed that lottielot beat me to it.

pkilmain- love it- storage space for frying pans and liquor bottles, you have your priorities straight.

@ninakk - my house is just under 1,600 square feet, which a google search tells me is 148.6 square meters.
@irishbell - sure beats frying pans in the oven and liquor under the sink! :) I noticed how much more I baked after I didn't have to remove the frying pans all the time!

@pkilmain: cool, sounds like the size of a house that I'm dreaming of too! just have to keep filling that piggy :)

rutheverhart @ DH is a slender man, like every member of his family. His father used to say that one can't fatten a thoroughbred!
Our current house is 67 square metres and there is limited storage. That will change when we build our country house, although I don't want to build extra space just to house new stuff.Posted 1 year ago # -
The first, and only thing, my father ever stole was a spork! He used it in a restaurant in the 70s, thought it was of excellent design and pocketed it. Mum was outraged :-)

Nina, my house is 1600sf too, and it's too big! My dream is that eventually I'll get rid of enough stuff that we can move into a smaller house. Maybe one with a broom cupboard and a linen closet :)
First my mom has to buy a house and stop using me for a mail drop, though.

Oh gosh, I like a bigger house. I like the room and space it gives me! I dislike feeling crowded, which happens easily for me.

The size of this house fits me fine, though I'd like to rearrange a few things, but oh well. It's paid for, that's the best part. :)

I'd love to have more room around every piece of furniture, not necessarily more furniture though. Makes cleaning a breeze and the emptiness becomes part of the decor :) I also like to compartmentalise functions; no big fan of the 'one huge open space for the whole family' concept, so this requires a few more square meters here and there. Finally, what I detest the most right now is bumping into furniture if not paying attention all the time. Stuff also has to be put away immediately or I'll trip over a shopping bag, computer bag or such. Oh well, dreams are healthy.

ninakk, we're in the same boat, although it sounds as though yours is even smaller than ours:) we've got about 48 square metres (about 517 square feet?) for two people and the fact that it LOOKS cluttered--but doesn't contain clutter--does bug me. However there certainly are areas I have to keep an eye on, and since finding this forum I have been realizing that keeping a certain level of decluttered discipline is rewarding and fun.
When we do move to a larger flat, I will be concerned that we don't just fill the extra space!
