I'm moving to Alaska. I'll be taking a ferry and then driving part-way. I'm working on reducing my stuff to what I can fit in my truck (I'm single, I don't need much). I'll buy a new bed when I get there.
But I keep thinking about how to protect my stuff.
Option 1: Tarps. Advantage: they're cheap. I already have a big one that will work just fine. They're easily stored when not in use. Disadvantage: They're not very reliable, especially in big wind. And I think it just may become useless if I hit heavy snow. I only have tie-downs in the 4 corners of my truck bed so strapping it down adequately will be a challenge.
Option 2: A Roll-up cover (follow link to see picture http://www.hondapartsdeals.com/product_info.php?pName=rollup-cover-ridgeline-2&cName=20062008-ridgeline-ridgeline-exterior)
The advantage is that it'll provide better protection of my stuff, improve gas mileage, easily rolls up when not in use. Disadvantage: Limits the storage volume in my bed, it's a little expensive (but still manageable).
Option 3: Canopy (follow link to see picture http://www.canopycountry.com/HondaLeer.html)
The advantage is that it'll protect my stuff and provide room for my stuff, improve gas mileage (or so I've heard). The disadvantages include the cost, and what do I do with it when I don't want to use it?
Cost-wise, I think it'll be worth it to buy a canopy or a roll-up cover. I intend to be moving a lot over the next 10-20 years and I love driving so I'll be in this position again.
The "what do I do with it" question is a big one. I live in apartments. I bought a truck because I wanted a truck, not an SUV. So I will want to remove it at times.
Have you ever owned a truck with a canopy? Do you ever take the canopy off? How do you store it when you take it off? Is it worth the hassle/money?
