I have 3-4 pairs of shoes that are worn out- not suitable for donation or passing along to a friend. I have seen recycling programs for athletic shoes, but these castoffs don't fall into that category. Does anyone know how I can recycles them? Or should I just trash them?

I would just trash them. Unfortunately. The construction of most shoes is so complex that separating them into their component parts for recycling is not economically viable.
frex, this weekend I threw out an old swampy pair of 100% manmade sneakers (nothing there to re-use) and a pair of cheap sandals that had pleather uppers and cork-wrapped wedge soles. If it had been solid cork I would have tried to use it some other way, but the shoes were waaaaayy too heavy for it to have been cork, so away they went.

The goodwill I used to work for took old worn out shoes even if they weren't wearable anymore. They didn't take anything with large heals or cleats in them or boots but athletic shoes they took. They just rubber banded them together or used the laces to tie them together and they went into shoe salvage which did not go into a landfill. As long as they aren't moldy or something. if you have a Goodwill in your area you could call and ask if they take salvage shoes.

Many charity shops will recycle shoes - just pop in an ask. The one where I used to volunteer took shoes, any kind of textile and also odds and ends like printer cartridges, mobile phones, foreign currency etc.
