I know it's probably a cliche by now, but to me, the white towels make the bathroom feel just a little like a fancy hotel or a spa. Also, the towels I have had for many years in colors are still servicible, I am sick of the color and pattern after so long, and they feel dated.
As Erasergirl said, you can fill a white laundry load with the white towels. All I have otherwise are some of DH's underwear and a few socks.
Anyone have a specific brand of towel they recommend????
not really... but I look for long staple cotton (often Turkish) and I avoid towels with decorative bands, etc which tend to shrink in the wash. also check the quality of the seams to ensure they are well-made. a good set of towels can last 10 years plus of daily use and 1-2x week washing.
A number of months ago we got rid of a couple of old, dead, red towels and replaced them with a pale green set of towels. For me a 'set' is 2 bath towels (since there are two of us), 1 hand towel (I hate visiting someone and being confronted with only their currently-in-use bath towels on the rail when I wash my hands - do I wipe my hands on my shorts or do I use a corner of their towel when I don't know who's it is or what part of their body it has been used to dry?) and a bath mat.
My favourite colour is blue but, as we already have towels in pale blue and medium blue, DH said we had to get something different so we ended up with the green that we could agree on (it's called 'Frost'). I don't (much) mind what the colour is but in future I'd like to have matching sets that go into the bathroom together. I'm thinking that if / when we next move, I'll ask for some new towel sets, to replace the old ones, as a house-warming gift. :-)
As for brand, we have had a lot of rain here lately and our towels have been hanging on the backs of chairs to dry. I noticed today, when I went to put some of them away, that some towels were dry while others weren't. Interestingly, it's the new, fluffier ones that are dry while old, thin ones are still damp. So, as well as asking for new towels, I'll specify that brand (cotton ones, made in India, that we got from Sheridan of Australia) for preference.
I switched to white towels for an unusual reason. I used to have pretty bad acne; I finally found a treatment that worked, however I didn't know benzoyl peroxide has the annoying side-effect of bleaching sheets and towels. For over a year, I had splotchy blue towels; then I switched to white.
In the meantime I got rid of the acne and went off the treatment; now I have (gasp) beige face cloths. The rest of my towels are white, with the exception of beach towels. I like white towels, mainly because they show any dirt, so they make you wash them regularly.
Yes @ella I still use bluing, lovely stuff if you use it right.
I buy dry TIDE laundry detergent and an unscented softener and Stewart's bluing for the whites.
I use a LOT of dish towels..i only use paper towels for icky straight into the trash stuff - (i rescue animals so that's a big thing here)
I have one of those hanging Diaper dispensers in my kitchen and i keep it filled with rolled white dish towels i use for EVERYTHING.
Hence it is easy for me to do a bleach load once a week.
@AleighJc- if you haven't already decided what to do with the old towels, animal shelters or vets would love to have them!
My bedroom and bathroom are both purple, and with it comes purple towels!!! I have a few cream and toupe towels for accent. I love color. White seems too much like a hotel or hospital. I've got some torn, accidentally bleached, or towels that came from my parents that I use when I bathe my dog or wash my car. They're on the very top shelf out of the way. The only problem is they're hard to reach. I sometimes have to get the ladder. My bathroom cabinets are floor to ceiling (approx. 8 ft., putting the top shelf about 6 ft. higher or more - I'm 5'4").
