I am not sure how to word this... I am sure some of you keep your spaced decluttered and neat to give yourself peace, a calming enviroment, and so on.

So I've decided to replace my towels because they are worn out. What color would you all suggest? They are only used for one bathroom, and almost any color would go. I currently have white, but wondering if I should try another color. They seem a bit dingy. I probably washed them with blue jeans which I know is a nono...

Should I get white and be more careful about washing them, or is there another color that is good for a declutted look...?

I prefer white (when I was living at home, I was the only one who used white, it was 'my' colour, not that it was formally done, just happened). When I moved out I took 1-2 white towels.

I have bought blue hand towels, foot mats and two guest towels. When I'm a guest, I'm scared to mark white towels, so that's why my guests get a coloured towel. I love blue, everything in my house is blue, so for me it was a no brainer, though I did eye off charcoal (only bought these towel this week!)

I figure for me, I can bleach/oxy wash my white towels.

Biggest tip - don't wash in hot, then most things will be MORE colour fast (though not perfect). Alternatively, wash lights with lights, darks with darks, so if colours run it's minimal.

I prefer white towels and, just like snosie, I use bleach and/or oxi. Also you might consider adding blueing to the rinse water. Be very careful and dilute it first.

I read somewhere (pretty sure it was wardrobe related, but totally relevant for decorating) that everyone has a "happy color". A color that always makes you smile and brightens your day, the color you always gravitate towards when picking something out. For snosie I would be willing to bet that's blue, for me it's a vibrant teal. Point being: choose your "happy color" to brighten your day every time you use your towels. Life's too short to pick based on laundry needs!

@Ella: lucky! (Seriously, a color that's easy to bleach and you love - can't be beat. The rest of us have to choose haha)

smallLIfe bang on - I too love Teal, but just harder, the shades of teal, cause they don't all work together (imo), whereas all blues work for me!!

Mine is purple, but ds1 chose that first so I have charcoal grey. Ds2 has lime green and dh has white. And they all go beautifully with my bathroom. I wanted deep blue to go with the tiles, but it was impossible to find a matching colour so I gave up. Upstairs dh has yellow and a rainbow towel intended for the beach but which he likes and uses for everyday. I love that rainbow towel actually, stripes make me happy :)

If you don't care that much about the colour, I'd pick one which goes with your bedlinen. Bedlinen plus towels are one 60°C/colour machine load here (one week, one set of bedlinen, one set of towels so two loads in total)! I never bleach anything and my white stuff is crisp as the newest snow even after years; the washing programme is 128 minutes or less depending on the volume/weight of the load.

So glad this topic has come up whilst I am thinking about buying towels for our recently renovated bathroom.

I love your logic ninakk. For me, it makes a lot of sense. I agree though for people that have a happy colour that it should be the choice where it works with the bathroom scheme. Most of my drying is down on the outdoor clothes line so another factor for me relates to colour fastness in the sun.

I've recently replaced all my old and mismatched towels with turqouise ones. They are definitely a "happy colour" for me (love that expression btw). :)

my old towels went out last year, to be replaced by subdued lime green hand towels and bath mats (two of each) and towels (two for each of us), plus a few peshtemals in mismatched but complementary various shades of gray with white stripes in different ratios.
i love white towels but they don't last five minutes here, with the volcanic red dust.

i say get whatever colour pleases you!
and if you want to be minimal, don't get lots.

My daughter uses white only--says she can feel aditions feel matched even if they are not the same as the older ones; uses bleach if needed (2 kids, 2 dogs). I prefer light blue in this and in almost every area of decor for its peacefulness.

White all the way - both for sheets and towels. After all you can tell if they are dirty (and who wants dirty sheets of towels) and therefore they seem clean and crisp to me.
But if you want something with color maybe something with stripes?

i had this same dilemma. towels control my laundry

i was single all i owned were white, because i could put the few white towels in with the white bed linens and make 1 load.

when i was married, I added new bath towels that were a dark maroon. so i could do a single load which was all dark towels.

i am single again, i have two colors. my personal towels are navy blue so i can make a dark load with dark towels and sweatshirts, socks etc..

i have white towels for dish towels, pet towels, bath mats, hand towels...all of these amount to 1 entire second bleach wash.

I have 3 sets of towels: white, dark grey, light grey. My bathroom is white and grey. I like to have sets in different colours even though I live alone, it makes it easier for visiting overnight guests to have their own set. A set of towels for me is one bath towel and two hand towels, of which I use one for my hair and the other one for hands/face. I mainly use the dark grey towels myself, I rather like that any small makeup stain or whatever is not immediately visible (I do laundry once per week if nothing unexpected happens). I also always have an extra hand towel hanging for guests, from one of the other sets of towels. I figure that my guests are smart enough to understand that the "odd" colour hanging there is meant for guests. I'm not overly bothered by things like that myself, but I do admit that it bothers me a little bit if I visit someone and the only towels available are a couple of visibly well-used bath towels.

I really like white sheets, but since I don't use a separate bed cover (bought one in a WWIT moment but has since then donated it) but have my sheets/duvet cover as bed cover, I find that it looks a bit too cold with white. I therefore mainly use a bed set which is patterened in various grey shades. The other bed set is white, I use it mainly for emergencies or for guests.

My two bathrobes (summer/winter) are white, as are all my linen kitchen towels (all 6 of them), my 2 small linen table cloths and my 6 linen napkins that I use all the time.

With all this, I manage to sort out my laundry rather well :)

We have several sets of old towels. One is navy blue, one is a lighter purplish blue, and the third is pink/purple. None of these go with my bathroom decor very well. I am in the process of making a new shower curtain which is white with silver, pink and blue pattern. When I have this ready, I will buy new towels, and I'm leaning toward some white with a silvery blue stripe that I saw recently. The problem with white anything for me is that we cannot use bleach as we have iron in our water which the bleach precipitates as orange onto the whites. I do occasionally use non-chlorine bleach or oxy-clean, but I miss the real white bleach gives.

Consequently, I have one set of bed linens that are beige with brown print, and a second that is white with yellow print.

My kitchen towels are a hodge-podge which comes from never getting rid of all in favor of new ones! I replace them as needed, and of course never can find the same pattern. LOL

I do exact what ninakk does except with color instead of whites. Our bath towels are dark brown (I don't like the extra care white towels seem to need, we had some for years and years and the moment they expired, I got dark brown).... our guest towels are tan... the two sets of sheets for our bed are tan and dark brown, and the two sets for the guest bed are also a medium brown color. All go wonderfully together in the same wash load once a week in warm water with cold rinse, and I have not seen much fading yet.
