Absolutely. Especially the big box discount stores in the city -- better stock up on the cheap stuff while you're there! And I live only about 15 miles/25 km from the nearest town, so while selection isn't as great and some things really are not available, it's not as if I couldn't get something if I had to.
There are some things that I stock up on because I absolutely do not want to run out, and although I am close to town, at any given time, there might be a reason why I couldn't get to town for a couple of days, especially in the winter. So things like diapers and toilet paper I ALWAYS have a back up supply. I can only remember one time ever when I got down to my last pack of toilet paper.
However, since I have done a little decluttering and also have been doing some cleaning that hasn't happened for a LONG time, I've been tossing/donating things that I bought and never used or that were just spoiled due to time and/or neglect, and that seems to be cutting down somewhat on my urge to shop. Opening up a box of cereal that turned out to be two years past its best before date that tasted stale has made me rethink my food stocking tendencies as well. Also, the big box cheap stores being a particular weakness of mine, it helps that as I get older and have more and more kids to cart around, I am starting to HATE going into those stores! Between the kids either misbehaving or wanting to ride in the cart because they are tired and the crowds and the fact that my van is filling with kids and running out of storage space to get it all home, I am slowly losing my desire to even go into those stores.
I think some of this comes from my pack rat/frugal ancestors. My dad worked away a lot, so when he came home, he pretty much always went through the city and would come in with bags and bags of stuff that he had stocked up on where it was cheaper. So I tend to think that trip to the city equals stocking up. I'm getting to the point now, though, where I'm starting to think that I'd rather spend a little bit more on something and just get it at home where I can be in and out of the store faster than I can park in the city.
