Under the bed - nothing except for a stray dust bunny or two inbetween cleanings. I made a decision many years ago to have that space empty and I've managed to keep it like that.

Ah, envy seeps from my pores.
OK, thanks for everyone's suggestions. I am going to try to tackle one bed (gasp, the guest bed - but it's a KING!) this weekend and see what I find. We keep our big luggage under ours so there's less space for clutter there (hmmm...maybe I should start there for baby steps!)
I'll keep track of what I find for a laugh and a half!
Thx, everyone!

good luck! Definitely start with the easy one and work up. I recently threw out my king size bed as I'm planning to buy a new one and am wrestling with the storage issue. You have never seen as much junk as there was under my old bed :) Even a desiccated rodent, ew! I had some Ikea under-bed boxes which held some old records of dh's, out of season shoes, that sort of thing. The problem was that there wasn't really enough room to pull them out properly so things there tended to get forgotten. Plus the detritus of everyday life collected there, particularly toys etc. Since the bed took up so much of the room, you couldn't move it to clean under or around it, so things just migrated towards the middle. I filled a bin liner with stuff from under that bed! Currently I'm sleeping on a memory foam topper on the floor and it's quite comfy, I like being low to the ground so if one of the kids climbs in they don't wake me up by falling out. I think my new bed will be low to the ground and take up as little space as possible. I like the idea of the Ikea lids, what a genius solution! Definitely though, underbed storage needs to be well planned and a matter of necessity rather than 'I'll just chuck it here'. I don't think I'll have anything unless I can help it.

lottielot: I have seen storage (platform-style) beds on the IKEA (US) website. But of course you may not care for those...I currently have an antique ("mansion-style") headboard and it really doesn't "go with" IKEA, imho. Enjoy your newly-found space in your bedroom...with or without ds 1 and 2.

thanks sunshineR, I'm going to look at beds next weekend. I've seen some storage beds but actually, I don't think one is needed plus I don't like the way they look particularly. We already have built-in wardrobes in the room, the whole room will just look a bit too 'storagey' if I get a storage bed too I think. Plus, we have plenty of storage in the house really, I just need to be clever in how it's all arranged and vigilant in keeping the clutter down :)

lottielot: built-in wardrobes with the organizer shelves, drawers and cubbies are on my dream list. :)
