Hi, my name is Nancy and I'm a clutterer. <All together now ... "Hi, Nancy ... ">

I'm paralyzed, actually. I found this site a few months ago. I've taken the first step and admitted that I have a problem. I'm learning a lot and trying my best to take baby steps towards actually doing something about it.

One of my biggest problems - shared by many, I know - is that I have a hard time letting go of things because I'm just sure that there's someone out there that can use it. I just don't know who they are or how I can get it to them.

I know the obvious ... recycling centers, Goodwill, Freecycle, eBay, Craigslist. Is there a list of - or a link to an article or topic for - some other ideas?

You could look in your local phone book under "thrift"

If you just let your stuff go.... it will get to the right person. :)

Homeless shelters (especially womens)usually take anything helpful in setting up a household.

I think some of these are only in the NY area, but maybe it would give you some ideas...

Dress for Success: women's suits & business clothes
Mary Brennan Inn (soup kitchen): men's clothes & toiletries
Ethical Friends of Children: children's clothes, furniture, books, toys
St. Vincent de Paul: clothes, furniture, china, dishes (high-end)
Savers: clothes, shoes, anything househhold you can imagine (low-end)
Local library: books, videos, Cds (for their bi-annual sale)

@Julia - you are so right. (and thank you for your reply on the other thread.)

I've been dealing with some mental clutter of worrying if stuff goes to the "right" person. For example, here in NY, Savers thrift store is a for-profit company. A small portion does go to the charity Big Brothers/Big Sisters, but I always felt that it wasn't good enough.

But so what if they make money on my stuff. They are employing local non-English speaking people who might not be able to get a job elsewhere. And they are selling things to low-income families at a good price.

I'm dropping off the rest of the things that didn't get Freecycled today (2 boxes). It's convenient and it's out of my house, finally...

Just remember that the longer you hold on to something while waiting for the "right" person, the longer the people who need it won't have access to it. It'll just sit unused and wasting away in your house.

Let it go so those who need it can find it right away! :)

@Mrs.Mack, oooookay then! *HITTING PASTE* ;o) No really, I usually think: 'I know I've read this somewhere before and I don't want to type it out again!' and then start looking for whatever it was, which takes about the same time as typing would... Maybe it would be all better if I had the same hat as that cat in the Department of Redundancy Department pic, lol!
