They say that moving day ranks among the top three most stress events life has to offer. Whether you are doing an interstate move for a job or facilitating the packing and unloading of your son/daughters first semester of college...each situation can leave you with enough stress to pay your therapists mortgage in full, we all can attest to the that moving, even for a good cause, is one that a nuisance.
That being said, moving during a stressful time really seems like a impossible burden, and can really take its toll physically and mentally.
Last year this time, I helped a good friend move during a stressful time: the death of a really close relative that she cared for up until the time of her relatives passing. When I flew down to Texas to help aid my friend in the process of burial, funeral arrangement and packing/moving, my level of emotional and physical exhaustion had reached its height. From supporting my friend through emotional outbursts, to packing and moving...I can’t even imagine what it did to her.
Because of this experience, I learned so much about how stressful an involuntarily move can be, whether it be a death in the family, a divorce or loss of ones job.
If moving is something that you must do, as opposed to wanting to do, regardless of the stressful situation you may be in, then I would like to offer some invaluable tips on how to do so.
Stay Organized
One of the best general moving tips — whether it’s during a difficult time or not –is to stay organized throughout the moving process. No matter your moving time line, organization, and pre-planning if you can (of course with sudden death in the family, you can't) will help the process progress more smoothly.
The potential for forgetting something crucial increases when your stress level is high, so start your move planning by consulting amoving checklist. This will help you keep things organized without overexerting yourself at the last moment. Experts recommend that starting the moving process two full months in advance will give most people enough time to plan appropriately without lengthening the stressful period unnecessarily.
