@shebolt--I don't consider the purpose of Pinterest to be edification or deep thought, I see it as being quite literally, a "normal" pinboard, a jumble of what one might casually rip out of a magazine and stick on the fridge because it's a great colour or style or recipe, a motivational saying, whatever--just digitalized, with a sharing/browsing function. It's not the venue for education and moral worthiness, so all the nail polish/fashion stuff bothers me not at all. I just ignore it. Just like I ignore the recipes, because I can't believe people can get so worked up about food:)
I totally agree about the useful part of it, where you can get great ideas for design and planning.
While the nail polish & fashion pins irk you, all those awful, lame, faux-deep-thoughts are what do me in. Hmmm. Maybe I should start a board of the most syrupy sweet juvenile sentiment I can find *evil grin*

djk, it's not the existence of the fashion/nail pins that bother me, it's the overall volume of them. I have a few fashion pins myself, mostly ideas for some of the stranger items in my closet (like my red dress trousers).
I have to laugh at some of the outfit posts that are basically jeans and t-shirts. I can't believe people have to plan a casual outfit to that level.

Heh. Jeans and t-shirts? That's pretty bad...
I usually just look at the pinners I follow, or go directly to a category that calls my name. A couple of times I looked at "everything" but that's where I gagged at all the "inspirational" sayings so I don't go there anymorePosted 3 months ago # -
Maybe I should follow your lead and just avoid the everything category, too.

shebolt - i'm dying at your "if it can be accomplished in 10 minutes it shouldn't be on your bucket list" comment. i have ranted the exact same thing over and over. to me, bucket list things should take time and planning and a little but of sacrifice and be a little bit on the side of unlikely/impossible. that said, i keep a shorter list of "things i want to do" that i can accomplish in an afternoon - driving up one of Canada's most scenic roads, for example. it starts 10 minutes from my house and would take about 3 hours to complete round trip. bucket list worthy, hardly, but well worth the extra effort to make it a priority.
i don't pay much attention to the fashion pictures on pinterest, but i do follow a few fashion blogs (more for amusement than style inspiration). h was peering over my shoulder one day and (jokingly) commented that i should start a fashion blog if jeans/t-shirt/scarf/oversized handbag are the only requirement. it's my "uniform" and i like it, but it's nothing to write home about.

I love pinterest, but mainly cause it gets everything together in one place, without paper clutter - given that I've just moved into a new place, I gathered inspiration and ideas there. Now that I only 'internet' at work (really) i use it less, but still, it's good to pop over there to check my options on fridges (or link to the one I bought). Works for me...
Also, the crafty stuff gives me 'something to do' when I'm caused with boredom (yes, only boring people get bored says my grandma, and I'll roll with that!)
I don't pin any quotes or clothing or pretty photos, mainly cause they aren't of interest, and thankfully you can filter others pins by these categories too.

In unclutterer style, I'm removing images I no longer need (ie options for purchase, but I'd selected now, so other options need not be kept on pinterest!)

OK, have to revise my statement. I shouldn't have reactivated my Pintrest account. It is such a time suck, have been one and off on it all weekend. I suppose it wears out....
I was so smart to stop using it first time around (a year ago), but now it is so much better and there is an iPhone app and blah, blah...and after this thread I thought...hmm...maybe I didn't give it enough chance the first time around. Too late, I am hooked. But I hope this is like with FB and stuff, you get bored of it after a while....
@Jeri - I am following you too :))

This thread actually inspired me to sign up and I can see how it will be helpful for organizing my own visual information -- not so much for munging around other people's visions.

Stella, I'll have to say that it's taking the place of the slick magazine eye candy that I already don't have time for. I am strangely fascinated by total strangers who are "following " me.. like I have a fan club or something!
It is also keeping me from filling my desk with clippings and allowing me to place bookmerk items in a visual form that I can relate to. Am I relating yet? No, I am collecting! I am aggregating more and more pins and not going to them as a source... even the pretty pictures I like get really looked at after I pin them. I just go looking for more! Many are not connected to content, sources, anything! I click through to see if I need the pin and all I find is a blog that cited the image and is not of use to me, can't even find the original reference.
And still I am saturating myself in it this first week.
DH and I are looking to buy a different home. This will be my clippings file for ideas. I also have found a few good subject level people to follow in my teaching field. The crafts and recipes are much repinned and enjoyed. Sigh! Who needs sleep...

@ Another Dep - yes, LOL.
I am actually enjoying looking thorugh other people's boards and have discovered many sites I otherwise wouldn't have. Trying to keep my boards in some kind of order so I can actually use them (as in I started a Memory Keeping board and linked all my sites related to that and found some new ones, etc.)
It is fun, but then again it is something I could have done without.
BTW - re home decor Ideas - I have an Idea book in Houzz.com (they have and iPad/iPhone app as well) for all my favorite interiors (thinking of moving some of it to Pintrest). I highly recommend this site if you are looking for great pictures of interiors. (I still can't help buying actual magazines on home decor, but I don't pile them up, I cut out the pictures I like and place in my Home Decor Binder and I actually do look at this much more often then I do at my idea book online. It is something about the physical version that attaracts me.
Anyway, I will go pin some more now :)

I find Pininterst overwhelming. I have too much to wrap my brain around at work!
Posted 3 months ago # -
It's Pinterest, not Pinin... :)

HaHaHaHa! I was copying the title and still misspelled it!
When I say the title of the website in my mind, it always comes out "PINE-INTEREST." I could never reconcile the title with my name for it. I think I need to declutter my brain!

I found it very helpful for my clients - I started out with my personal account, pinned a decorative pillow from a home decor site I run social media for, and within 2 days they had someone click through to the site and buy that pillow.
So I find it useful from a business point of view, and also to satisfy my "caption this picture" itch which is purely for amusement. I have a lot of friends who are into the whole "sci-fi fantasy geek inside joke if you get it you belong to the tribe" type of thing, and it's always fun to come up with a new "Bitch, please" meme.
I love what some people have done with it for recipes, though. Your mouth waters! I and my peeps call it "food porn".

@Stella: Glad to have you following me! I don't go crazy doing pins, so I won't be overwhelming you.

So I have never spent THAT much time on Pinterest. But has anyone noticed an increase in spam? 5 of the 7 or so things I clicked on today was removed.
Posted 3 weeks ago # -
I love pinterest, I have an app on my phone and it helps while away my commute. However it is my Sunday night ritual to fire up the real machine and read my google reader feeds and catch up on pinterest.
I've used several ideas already. It frees me from having to have all my usual shelter mags.Funny you should mention the spam--noticed one today for the first time.
