With the news of the earthquake off Japan and the resulting Tsunami it really emphasises the fragility of what we build.
It's been terrible seeing these disasters unfold recently and I've had a similar loss within my family because of a house fire and my heart goes out to those affected by these didasters.
It brings it home to me that people and their lives are what really matter.

My BIL and his family have checked in; they felt it all the way down in Osaka, and the nuclear reactor is shut down in Tokyo: 4 million people in the dark . . . .

"With the news of the earthquake off Japan and the resulting Tsunami it really emphasises the fragility of what we build."
Fragility? What? It was a 8.9 earthquake and a Tsunami that originated 80Miles / 130KM from the coast. Of course it's going to tear shit up, those P, S, Love and Rayleight waves are going to shake things (literally) up.
*EDIT*
Ok I know that was not the OPs point in this post, but my very objective side jumps on things like that.

I just heard they revised to to 9.0.
The Ring of Fire is having a lot of activity - wonder if there's a shift in the earth's floor that is causing it all.

Donate for Japanese Tsunami relief here:

Don't know if the one below is just for Japanese tsunami relief or general funds:
From "People.com" comes:

"In terms of offering relief, among several organizations, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies makes donating quick and easy by accepting contributions via text message. Text "redcross" to 90999 and make a $10 donation. It will appear on your next cell-phone bill."

For those of you guys interested in the Geology.

For the geologist, feel free to correct any errors I made. Very impromptu research.

Since I live on the Pacific Rim, I don't like seeing any more activity. Alaska had a 9.2 earthquake in 1967 (and a number of lesser ones since) and no one wants a repeat of that - or the tsunami that followed. It's still very vivid in the memories of those who lived through it.

FatStupidAmerican, thanks for the link to your post. It's neat to see what exactly happened. Geology is so interesting (I always wonder why on these news sites they often have a meteorologist explain these things instead of a geologist? lol).

Japan earthquake: How to help
Several organizations are jumping in to help victims of the Japanese quake. Here's how you can help (and this list will be updated):
Using your cell phone, you can text-message donations of $10 to the Red Cross. Text the letters REDCROSS to 90999 to make the $10 donation, or visit the organization's website.
The International Medical Corps is putting together relief teams, as well as supplies. The organization is in "contact with partners in Japan and other affected countries to assess needs and coordinate our activities,” said Nancy Aossey, IMC president, on its website. You can donate here. Or, you can text MED to 80888 to donate $10 to emergency relief efforts.
Save the Children is accepting donations for its Children's Emergency Fund. "We are extremely concerned for the welfare of children and their families who have been affected by the disaster. We stand ready to meet the needs of children who are always the most vulnerable in a disaster,' said Eiichi Sadamatsu of the organization in a statement.
GlobalGiving, based in Washington, D.C., is providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami.
Facebook has a Disaster Relief page with lots of good information about organizations that are offering aid, and that you can help, in turn.
Microsoft has a Disaster Response Effort underway. "We are taking a number of steps, including ensuring the safety of our employees and their families and proactively offering customers, partners and local response agencies technical support to help ensure business continuity," the company said. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)
Mercy Corps is accepting donations to provide emergency assistance to earthquake survivors in Japan on behalf of their partner, Peace Winds Japan.Posted 1 year ago # -
They've upped it to 9.1 80

That's even bigger than the Thailand earthquake and tsunami. That was a 9.0! The earth has been left trembling on its axis.
There are two tools that you might want to see for earthquake activity.
http://aslwww.cr.usgs.gov/Seismic_Data/heli2.shtml
The seismographs in the second one are still registering tremendous activity all over the world.

i've offered a thousand bars of soap to my fave customer, who has shops here and in japan.
with the idea being they sell the soap here and send the proceeds (AUD$9K) to relief in japan.
still waiting to hear.Posted 1 year ago # -
That's wonderful, bandicoot! :)

lucy1965: any word from your family in Japan?
bandicoot: wow! I wish I could donate that much of something useful, or help to make the soap.

With the frequency of these disasters, it is also important to remember those who are still recovering and beginning the rebuilding process- Haiti, Chile, Christchurch in New Zealand, Queensland and Victoria in Australia, Brazil and all the others.....I saw a current affairs item about Pakistani's still living in temporary accommodation after their floods. So much need....

it's a GO for our soap donation.
they have requested our really australian soap with indigenous essential oils in it, and they will ship it at their expense to japan, where it will be sold in their shops.
this will raise a lot more than AUD$9K, so i am pretty excited about that.
with some help, you can turn a bit of soap into some serious money!
most people in japan simply cannot get insurance because of the high risk of earthquakes.Posted 1 year ago #
