hi, very single mom and since I moved here 5 years ago I have been attempting to declutter. It is hard because moving furniture I had to call a moving company to move a TV armor from down to up. Now on to the garage..20x40 in size... packed! I have looked into several systems and they are way to much $$$. Then trying to grab old kitchen cabinet bases is adding to the junk. I have no idea how to move the huge shelves alone. I need room to paint and have space. Any helpful tips?

Is it possible to start getting rid of stuff while you're figuring out the shelf/moving furniture stuff?
If you can subtract a couple moveable items every day (or week, or whatever) you'll be better able to know how much shelving you need, and it will be easier for people to move your stuff when you get to that part.

I'm in favor of drastically decluttering before you add any storage solutions. Why get solutions appropriate for the amount of stuff you have, if you don't want to have that much stuff?
Re: moving big things alone: I'm not in favor of it. Risk of injury is too high, especially once you start talking about stairs. Start asking among your friends to find someone who can help you on a designated day for a designated period of time. Reward with food. :-) And invest in a "hand truck" aka dolly - they are well worth the price in saved fingers and toes, and last a loooooong time. 800-lb capacity convertible model at Home Depot runs $85.
Also, in the future, if you foresee living alone for a considerable time, you might consider buying furniture that you can disassemble yourself for moving, or that is modular, rather than big solid things like armoires.

When I had to move alone, I asked a couple of teenagers in the neighborhood to help with a lot of the lifting. They were willing to help. I gave them each $20 and they were happy. It really saved me from hiring professionals, which would have been quite expensive.
