Freecycle or Craigslist or neighborhood/job classifieds listing (sometimes people are less flaky if you charge even $5 or $10.) If you're willing to haul it, instead of have someone pick it up, there might be a place that furnishes homes for people moving out of dv or homeless shelters that would take it.
Or ask around if anyone you know wants it - we picked up ours from a friend's mom, last time our old one died. I think it's from the early '90s - quite large, not flat screen. But now we have one we haven't been in the market for a long time.
And, yeah - around here monitors & TVs cost $20 to get rid of if you just put them in the trash.
