Any advice on how to "unclutter" my home of a 2004 TV that is bulky (before the days of flat screens) but in great condition otherwise. I don't necessarily have to profit from the TV. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind either. Thanks for any suggestions.
Our Goodwill won't take old TV's any more. I got rid of one on Freecycle last year. A woman wanted it for her children's room. I gave her an old DVD player and VCR too. If someone will take it, jump at the chance -- in some places you have to PAY people to take old TVs off your hands.
Freecycle or Craigslist or neighborhood/job classifieds listing (sometimes people are less flaky if you charge even $5 or $10.) If you're willing to haul it, instead of have someone pick it up, there might be a place that furnishes homes for people moving out of dv or homeless shelters that would take it.
Or ask around if anyone you know wants it - we picked up ours from a friend's mom, last time our old one died. I think it's from the early '90s - quite large, not flat screen. But now we have one we haven't been in the market for a long time.
And, yeah - around here monitors & TVs cost $20 to get rid of if you just put them in the trash.
A couple of tv/appliance stores in my area take old electronics for free. Our county landfill charged $20 per tv, but the other electronics were free. A local recycling company wanted $50 per tv.
I sold my old CRT TV on Craigslist for $20 last year. Not much money, but it was enough encouragement for me to lug it to the elevator in my building and meet the person at the curb. :)
Jeff, we gave an old rear projection set (nicknamed "the Monolith") to a Deaf school for a fundraising auction; might that be an option for you?

our local university will take old TVs and other electronics for free every Saturday. Most communities now have electronics recycling places somewhere where you can get rid of outdated stuff for free.
I'd agree with recycling it - given that a small flat screen TV can be had for less than $200 at Walmart, full retail, it's really hard to get someone to pay for a CRT.
I got rid of my last one by donating it to the apartment complex for a furnished unit when I moved out, and was glad to leave it.
You can post a small ad for it on the ad boards at your local grocery store or the nearest university. I can guarantee there are some students who'd rather pay $10 for a clunky old TV than hundreds for a new one.
You could also check your paper or clipper for a community yard sale.

Another option would be to drop it off at Best Buy. They now are required to take back old tv's.
I dropped a couple of old small TVs and monitors off at Best Buy last spring. They do charge $10 apiece, but then you get a $10 gift card. If you have no love of buying things there, you could always sell the gift cards.
My guess is they do that because many people will then spend more than the value of the gift card, probably much more.
We have $30 worth of Best Buy gift cards from recycling TVs there. They only take one a day. We have two TVs to go.
