anyone have any ideas on what to do with old cell phones. I have one that isn't even usable b/c it got fried when they were updating it. and two others that are just older and i don't use a cell phone at all anymore and don't see myself getting another one. I know they can be recycled but what about the chargers? I might be able to give away the older ones that are still working with the chargers, but do I need to do anything other than delete my info off of it. does anyone know if there is still a way my information could be on there after I've deleted it all by hand. I don't want someone stealing my identity from a cell phone b/c I didn't want to throw it in the trash.

Cell Phones for Soldiers (http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/) is an organization started by a couple of teenagers to recycle old phones and turn the money into phone cards for soldiers serving overseas. I myself have donated a few phones to them. You can get a prepaid package from them so you dont even have to spend the money to send it to them or you can use your own money to send them the phone.
As far as you info on the phone: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile all have sim cards inside. Once that is removed, so is your infomration. Sprint Phones do not have sim cards and need to be deleted by hand.

I'll second Gypsie's recommendation. IIRC, they took the chargers, too, and it was a tax writeoff (whatever the phones were worth, say, on Ebay). They have instructions on their website, too, to help you wipe your phone before sending it in.

There are also sites like gazelle.com that may even pay you for old electronics (not just cell phones).

I know elementary schools and sports teams are always collecting old cell phones where I live. Might be worth asking someone with school-age kids.
As for deleting anything off, there is usually a process to reset the phone to factory conditions, sometimes that will also delete all the info. I did that with a Samsung phone about a few years ago, I found the directions on Google.

You might check with FEMA or Red Cross. I've heard they need extra cellphones to use in disaster areas.

For those in Australia, you can get bags to send your old phones and their peripherals away to be recycled from post offices. It's post paid too. :-)

AT&T has a bin in their stores where you can leave old cell phone and chargers to be donated to soldiers overseas. They wipe them clean and get them back to factory settings removing all contacts, pics, texts, etc.

You can also give them to Women's Abuse centers. Here is called Center for Prevention of Abuse. They use them so give them to abused women who need a way to call for help. Cell phones don't need to be activated with a Provider but just need to charged so they pick up a signal then they can call 911 free of charge from anywhere in the U.S. It is a savior got many people.
