Yes -- you'd probably need a good overall light, a task light for work and a dimmed light for watching tv (or the like). The overall light (ceiling fixture, perhaps?) should be bright enough that you don't get a headache but could find a small item, like a screw or a piece of thread, on your floor around midnight. The task lamp should provide enough light for you to work, and the dimmed light should be a warm color and not so bright it might glare in a tv.
At my place, I have seven lamps in my living room (which is living room/office), which leaves a lot of on/off combinations for brightness and mood :o) There are two task lamps (one near the couch, one on the desk), a ceiling pendant and three table lamps and a clip lamp on shelves and the window sill. I always think the more light sources, the better -- this way, you can always leave some switched off.
At Apartment Therapy, they keep recommending the "three lights per room" rule:
Using 3 sources of light in one room is a good start. This might mean 2 table lamps on either side of the couch and a bubble lamp in the darker corner, or it might mean christmas lights on one wall, a table lamp on a desk and a brighter overhead light. Start experimenting with adding light to a room and see what feels best.
They usually have product roundups every once in a while, so if you google "site:apartmenttherapy.com lamp roundup" you should find some suggestions for lamps :o)
