Most of the articles I've read about minimising clothing seem to assume that the audience are office workers and list the number of interchangeable neutral suits and shirts required + a pair of jeans for the weekend.
I'm a full-time student and manage just fine on 2 pairs of jeans and a drawer of t-shirts (maybe about 12 - mixed long and short sleeve), plus one grey hoodie, three button down shirts (grey, blue, white), one grey sweater, black duffel coat for winter, khaki canvas jacket for summer, two pairs of Doc Martens (one black, one brown), one pair of dressy shoes, one pair of trainers, one brown suit and one dinner suit, one silk tie and one bowtie. Plus underwear and socks. The suits are because we are of an age where all our friends are getting married (four weddings so far this year).
I'm thinking that I probably need to get something smart-casual though - maybe a pair of navy needlecords and a sports jacket ? Not sure.
I'm also hatching a secret and cunning plan to try and coax my wife to reduce her clothing a bit. She has a huge amount of clothes but most of it is pretty cheap and, well, studenty. We agreed to try and buy each other useful/non-cluttery gifts this December so I'm thinking a couple of clothing items which could potentially form the basis of a capsule wardrobe might be just the thing. Or am I just going to be adding to the clothing clutter ?
I was thinking I might get her a plain black dress made from the pattern available at the Uniform Project in black twill. She doesn't have a black dress (though she does have other black clothing) and all the lists seem to agree that that's a sort of staple for women. And maybe a pair of black Doc Martens, because they're pretty much a design classic and they're very comfy.
What do people think ?
