Thirding (fourthing? *grin*) the suggestion that the OP find out if the phone is compatible with the European networks, get an unlock code from the US service provider and pick up a PAYG SIMM card on arrival. DS found that his local newsagent had them for €20, and reloading was simple.
He's suggested that if the OP is going to be spending most of her time in Paris, good walking shoes are required: the Metro is magnificent, but the stairs up and down to many of the stations? Not so much! And even if you aren't living in a sixth-floor walk-up, it's likely that some of the people you may befriend will be.
