My husbands parents just mailed him legos from his childhood. We already have my legos ( not a lot , enough to fill a small box that is about the size of two shoe boxes)

My husbands legos arrived today - 60lbs!!!!!!

Do I really agree to him keeping all of them? I don't think he would have a problem with parting with some. I have no problem getting rid of mine. I am thinking we get rid of mine, plus half of his stash?? Does that sound "good"? It's just TO MANY I think. He does not really help pick up the house/put stuff away(he does do other things around the house at least thankfully), and that's why I don't want to keep all of them. I also just don't like having so many of them. I don't think its necessary.

First set of questions: Do you have children? Or do you plan to/wish to have children in the future? Or do you want to play with the legos yourself?

If the answer to all three of these questions is no, you probably shouldn't keep more than a fraction of it for sentimental purposes, if any at all.

We have a five year old daughter. My concern is also if she really enjoys the legos- we will probably buy some for a birthday or the holidays in the future a kit that makes some specific buildings or something. We have a lego store here and the grandparents live right by the new lego theme park.

why on earth would anyone buy MORE lego when there is already sixty pounds of it floating around?
that seems bananas to me, but maybe i don't get the lego allure at all :)

i would portion your husband's lego up and put most of it away.
if your daughter is crazy about it, then you could introduce portions at intervals.
if she isn't into it, then you can simply let it go.

holy smokes. um, should i feel like my little basket of four five project houses is too small? i get that having legos of general kind is triggering creativity in other ways than our kits but 60 lbs? that is the weight of a child!!! why not save some for everyday use, put a box in storage and donate or sell the rest?

60 lbs of lego is enough for a multitude of children. sort through it and keep about 5 lbs (even that is a LOT of lego) and give the rest to a children's charity.

Cutting it down to 30 lbs of legos still seems way too much. I agree with bandicoot- see how your daughter responds to small amount (has she ever played with your legos?), then share the joy. Children's charities, hospitals, etc. would probably love to have the extras.

YIPPEE!...LOTS of legos is a prize to anyone interested in architecture or engineering! if your family isn't interested, go on craigslist you will find folks interested in paying for your extra booty. just cutting it in half by weight may not be fair if there are some TYPES of lego units that are more interesting to those doing large scale construction.

you will see an aircraft carrier, a life size shark, london bridge, etc.
what you see as overwhelming..someone else will think of as a terrific opportunity. Find that person, don't deprive them of the chance to do something surprising!

@EraserGirl - Whoa, Escher's "Relativity" in Legos. Awesome!!!

@AleighJC - I would keep some of the best sets for your daughter, and any that have a special meaning to you or your husband (maybe 5-10lb in all), and donate the rest.

Personally, I'm much more a fan of old school Legos that could be made into anything you could imagine, than the recent ones that can only be put together a limited number of ways. I don't really think creativity should come with an instruction manual.

Here is what I would do: have your husband pick out the sets that mean a lot to him and he wants to keep. Then organize and decide on a few more sets that your daughter would like the best. Give her one set at at time and slowly dole them out as events come up (like birthdays, good grades etc). As she gets older give her the ones that your husband loves the best because as she gets older she is less likely to lose pieces.
All of the rest, donate to a women's shelter or a day care.
Be objective about the sets that will actually be used and valued in your household.

I would keep all/most of the legos, as you have room, until your kiddo is 7 or 8 and you have a grasp of whether she's a lego play kid or not. The thing about it being "enough for several children" is that when there are several kids, they dont' split up the Lego - they play together, building about the same size project one kid will. Same with blocks, lincoln logs, or other building toys.

My kid likes the legos way more than any other building toy, so we've gotten rid of the other building toys in favor of a very large amount of lego. It's way better to have all one thing than a little bit of multiple things, for that kind of toy.

I'm with Anita: free-play is the only way to go with Lego.
How about a Lego party? Put aside the ones you want to keep for your own kids first.

My son probably has about 30 lbs of legos and he's 16 and still plays with them all the time! He always wants more - especially the Harry Potter and the Pirates of the Caribbean ones. He goes way beyond the instruction manuals with them, too. I plan on packing them up for him to take with him when he moves out! LOL.

60 pounds. I am having trouble getting my head around that! To me it's a no-brainer, get rid of ALL of them. Let the grandparents buy new stuff if the daughter wants it later. With the theme park next door it's a good bet the kid will only want the newest and "best." But hey ... not my kid, not my stuff. :-)
