One of my friends gave me a huge candy necklace for my birthday. I have no intention of eating it (don't like that kind of candy!)...but how to get rid of it?

It is still in a plastic thingy and has obviously not been opened.

There are 2 charity shops in my village - can't give it to one because the friend works there, and don't want to give it to the other as I'm 99% sure they will just throw it away.

Any bright ideas for getting rid of it? Or recipes to use a whole lot of candy? (It's this kind: http://www.virginmedia.com/images/candy-necklace431x300.jpg )

My first impulse would be to give it to some small child I knew, or to a co-worker or friend with a child who might like it. Or just take it in to work and ask if anyone wanted it.

If you give out candy at Halloween, you could hand it over to a kid, making it the Special Treat for the Best Costume, or something like that.

And you can just throw it out or compost it.

Giving it to a kid would be good - pity I don't know any kids!

Halloween is a good idea too, except I'm in the UK and it's not a big thing here at all - if we get 2 trick-or-treaters, it's a busy year. More normally, we get one or none.

A pack of TWELVE of those necklaces sells for $2.99 on Amazon -- so, about 15p. I would give the disposal of it about 15p worth of attention.

And consider yourself lucky on the Halloween front, my neighbours all seem to be mad for it and all ds1's school friends knock on the door, I must buy some sweets.

If you are bound and determined to use the candy and not throw it out, you could cut the string and use the separate pieces as decoration on a cake or cupcakes.

Could you not take it in to the break room at work and leave it on a table with a "Free" sign on it?

@AnotherDeb- Do you really give out ketchup packs to the big kids? That is a fabulous idea...really thinking about it. I can't stand it when parents want candy, either. Tempted to put a "no costume, no candy" sign on the door, but not sure if the little hoodlums would do a "trick."

Rebecca, I have done this in the past. Sleight of hand trick, they are too busy being goofy and rushing away to notice. <mean teacher, already wearing my witch costume...

Alright, now I am curious, djk, how are you going to portray a banking crisis in costume? I would think of it more as interpretive dance...

My costume last year was a "Pirate of the VERY South Seas" I had all ice-blue and white clothing on, including a sweater-vest, a frosted pirate hat, and a stuffed PENGUIN on my shoulder. My sword was a ski pole and I walked around the school courtyard giving out "doubloons" (vanilla wafers)

The year before I was the "Metric Ruler" and had the huge queen dress on, but my crown was made of colorful plastic rulers and I carried a meter stick with a golden orb that said "10" on top. I went around bestowing titles such as "Lady Giga" and "Sir Hecto"

And lastly, my favorite was a year when I did a Martha Stewart gig. The dress was pretty standard, but I had modified the magazine as a "Martha Stewart Dying" issue with recipes for a hearse tailgate party. I carried that, plus a tombstone that "Martha" had hand-stencilled, and a "calligraphied toe-tag."

you must have the BEST costumes!

I am thinking of all in black, with oversized copied euro notes falling down with stock market graphs pinned all over, broken piggy bank in hand, face painted in Euro design, melting on one half, etc.

or I go across the ocean and have my front as Europe and rear American housing bubble. Must think, must think...

the costumes at this friend's yearly party are outrageous and creative and there is stiff competition for the best costume prize (it is an adulterated barbie, every year a different theme) and I WANT the best costume, da**it! Had it a few years ago with Swine Flu.

American housing bubble butt- I love it! Especially since I live in Arizona-with a big bubble.

You can shrink some of your Euros as they fall? And what would your spiel be? Maybe you know how to say "Heeeeeeeellllllllllllppppppp!" in 17 European languages?
