One of my problem areas is the top of my chest of drawers. This is where name badges, rings, glasses, keys, and necklaces live.

I realised that part of the problem is the necklaces. I'd put these in those little boxes they come in but then I'd just have a collection of little boxes, several of which are identical, lurking on the chest top. And besides, some of them don't have boxes.

I like to have the necklaces visible so I can easily pick one to go with a particular outfit. The chest top isn't really big enough to display them for quick retrieval and they can tangle up with other items.

Does anyone have a good solution for neat display and storage of necklaces? Please be aware that any proprietary product you suggest may not be available in Australia (or my location).

I recently started storing mine in a clear fishing tackle box. Each necklace has it's own compartment so they don't get tangled and it's clear so I can see them. I keep it on top of my dresser instead of a jewelry box. I love it!

I used to use a belt/tie rack. Just screwed it to the wall next to my dresser and it kept my most commonly used necklaces untangled and handy. It had around 20 posts sticking out. I still kept the valuable and less-worn necklaces in soft jewelry bags in a drawer.

Several ideas I've saved for future use but as I'm only renting at the moment I'm going for small stick hooks inside the wardrobe door.

My Mom gave me a gorgeous cherry wood jewellery box from Costco - it looks like a neat box, but the top and sides swing open to reveal silver hooks for necklaces and velvet lined tiny drawers for bracelets and earrings. I *love* it.

For non jewel necklaces, i too use a vintage tie rack attached to the inside of my closet door.

i keep my really good jewelry in a felt lined cigar box. i DO NOT RECOMMEND BUREAU TOP JEWELERY BOXES. the burglars took the jewelery box that had about 200 bucks in silver and completely ignored the cigar box with the 'real stuff'.
Get a fireproof lockbox, bolt it to the floor of the closet with your jewelry box and your important papers inside.

Jeri, you may have covered some of these (can't access your blog from work, sorry!), but I've seen a number of jewelry stands meant for necklaces and/or earrings, as well as for decoration.

A couple of examples:
- I've seen quite a few types of jewelry "trees" (example: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/roundup/roundup-branch-decor-070268 ). You can also make your own, if the DIY mood strikes. Just get a few nice twigs, a vase, and a bunch of pebbles or sand to fill the vase with for stability (how to: http://www.ehow.com/how_4544639_recycle-twigs-jewelry-hanger.html ).
- I've also seen a bunch of jewelry "mannequins" which you can get in a variety of styles: http://www.merx2go.com/prod/14172_06xlp.jpg (not sure about availability in Australia, but worth a look)

I use ice-cube trays to sort earrings, rings and other smaller items. You can also get other shaps to handle different jewellery, and mufin tins provide enough space in each hole for most necklaces.

I went to a friend's place for lunch today. She sells jewellery at a market so she has a few display stands.

One of the things she has is a cork-board covered in satin into which she has pushed some thumb-tacks that stick out from the board. She hangs her necklaces on this. The beauty of it is that as the tacks are moveable, she can rearrange them according the length of the necklace.

I think this might work for some of my items so I'll probably do something similar after I move.

I also like the cigar box idea - just a problem if the thief is also into cigars. :-)

I pasted some glue-on cup hooks (3M Command brand--if you have access to them--they remove without a trace) on the inside doors of my bathroom vanity. I staggered them so shorter necklaces could be on a lower tier. My other jewelry--brooches and earrings and rings fit into a standard chet--I got a nifty mirrored one--the exterior surfaces are all beveled mirrors-- at Target that works for my collection years ago, I see that they are selling it again this year.

I use a small top drawer in my dresser for inexpensive and costume jewelry. I agree with the other's sentiments about the good stuff... better to put it somewhere a thief wouldn't look. For the cheap stuff I wear everyday I purchased a two level "junk drawer" organizer like this:

It fits both my small earings in neat compartments and the large beaded necklaces as well! And the best part is - the drawer closes, so no clutter on top of my dresser!

My favorite necklace display idea uses an old notebook wire and two adhesive hooks. Take the notebook wire and strech it slgihtly making it a very loose spiral. Bend the ends into circular hooks. Put the adhesive hooks on the wall and hang the wire between them. Each loop on the wire will seperate a different necklace. It costs almost nothing and has a very unique, funky look. I've used both one and five subject notebook wires, they each have a different appearance. The wire will sag a little under the weight of multiple necklaces but still works great!

I can't speak much for displaying jewelry but regarding jewelry storage I keep all of my jewelry in little ziploc like baggies which can be purchased easily at the Container Store: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/movingShippingStorage/storageBags?productId=10005416 or http://www.royalbag.com

I have a nickel allergy so much of my jewelry is silver and gold. Keeping silver jewelry in baggies is a great way to keep them from tarnishing. Just remember to get out as much air from the bag as possible.

Another great thing about keeping them in clear baggies is you can store more jewelry in your box since everything is separated by putting them in individual baggies. For necklaces I use the longer bags and leave the clasp just right outside pleated area for interlocking the bag. This keeps the necklace from getting tangled as well. Having all my jewelry bagged also makes picking and choosing what I take when I go away very easy. Instead of putting each individual piece in everything is already bagged and ready to go. There's no fussing to make sure each necklace stays in it's spot and doesn't tangle with the one next to it. Essentially this also means you don't have to get a very fancy case/bag for your jewelry when you travel which is probably good to keep any thieves away.

So looking at my post now I guess the reason I don't display my jewelry is because I keep them stored in little baggies. To put it on display would be too much visual clutter for me anyway. LoL!

This may already be posted, but what I chose to get a small corkboard and push pins to hang my necklaces off of. I just hang that on my wall. I have a drawer organizer for bracelets and such..

I use inexpensive over-the-door hooks for necklaces - heavy ones on one, more delicate ones on another.

For earrings, I bought a very cheap embroidery hoop, inserted a loose-weave piece of cloth (a friend uses second-hand lace), and insert the hooks/posts through the fabrics.

Neither of these requires putting serious holes in the walls.

When I finally found a huge jewelry box I liked, I bought some cheap origami paper, found (web) instructions for folding small, 1x1" boxes, and folded up a dozen or so little boxes for earring storage. I used them to separate a large drawer in the jewelry box into the smaller compartments I wanted.

(I have very little expensive jewelry; what I do have, I keep in a small jewelry box - these solutions are for the costume stuff I've collected over the years.)

I love jewelry -- to me it's like wearable art. So I decided to treat it as such. I bought a nice picture frame, took the glass out and replaced it with some silver foam board. Added a bunch of small silver pins and voila! It's a masterpiece of beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Very easy to see everything at once and pick the perfect accessories for the day :)

I have one of those IKEA Pax Komplement drawers with lots of little divisions, and each division contains jewellery (except earrings) one colour. Some of the more delicate / tangle-able pieces are in their little bags, but I have an overview of all the colours. When I need to grab some accessories on the run, I can't go wrong !
