I just polished my kitchen garbage can! Looks a lot better now.

I have one of those garbage can enclosures that holds the actual garbage can. You step on a foot pedal, the lid flaps open, and you throw in the garbage. The enclosure is made out of stainless steel.

I like it -- it lives under the kitchen table, and I don't have to open and close the undersink door a zillion times a day. However, it takes constant maintenance to keep it from turning into a roach motel. I've been bad in the past about taking it outside to hose it off, but I'm going to try to do it every single weekend! AND, after this last washdown, I pulled out the silver polish and gave it a facelift.

Polishing your garbage sounds a little strange, but it makes a big difference in how my kitchen looks and feels.

sounds good to me.
we have a very rustic aussie bush kitchen with chunky wood with natural edges and a lot of mini-orb (that small corrugated iron stuff), so naturally, our rubbish bin is a big stainless steel bucket.
i know what you mean....keeping that thing shiny and clean makes a big difference to morale.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this...there's something very satisfying about revitalizing, mending, cleaning, and sprucing up what you have...it is not only mood-boosting but I have found it makes me not want to purchase new things.

Does anyone think it's crazy to wash the outdoor trash can? It's a big, blue, ugly monster of a can (city-provided) and it gets horrid looking. My husband thinks it's insane to scrub it down, but neighbors have asked me on several occasions how I got a "new" trash can! :)

I don't think it's crazy ... I think it's good public hygiene! Well-established fact: keeping a public area clean makes it less likely that it will be vandalized or attract litter. (Not many people are willing to be the first to drop trash on a clean sidewalk.)

Not to mention it will smell better and look better.

I was totally psyched to see how shiny the nonslip mat in the kids bathtub looked after I scrubbed it down. I thought I was nuts, good to know I have some company there ;-)

I thought everybody shined their indoor stainless steel trash cans. A little polish,a microfiber cloth and voila, clean stainless steel everywhere. Otherwise it's got all kinds of drips and splotches and dust on it, at least mine does.
My hubby used to think I was nuts to wash our big trash company trash/recycle carts, now he does it himself. We keep them in the garage and they will stink a bit if not hosed down once in awhile. I try not to put any trash in there unless it's in a bag of some sort,(not the recycle cart) because loose food debris will definitely make a stink.
MelieTX, when I was younger, I used to think "oh this has gotten so dirty, time for a new one." Then I started scrubbing things a bit more and more often, and less things have to be bought. As Rod Stewart used to sing "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger"

I have some kitchen paper towels in the bottom of my bin, and some bicarb spread on that - it really helps keep down odours.
