And 3 good pairs of sports' socks plus a few that should be repurposed for cleaning. Also, I have some nylon ones, both ankle, knee level and full-length, but those I don't use on a regular basis.

To keep on top of this i usually sort through my clothes 2x times a year - when the seasons change from cold to warm.

I love socks! Socks socks sock! I have casual socks, knee-high socks, sports socks (cycling, snowboarding, running, hiking), winter socks, summer socks, a few novelty socks, and trouser socks. I store them in bins by type and keep the pairs together. Periodically I purge (especially the novelty & holiday socks that are mostly given to me as gifts), but I still own a lot of socks.
It's not clutter if they are stored neatly, loved and used often, right?
I was once amazed when I counted all of my underwear and realized I owned over 60 pairs. I was hanging on to older pairs that should have been discarded and to styles that I hated, in addition to a large supply of ones that I liked and were still nice.
I must have some fear that there will be a zombie uprising and I'll never be able to buy a new pair of underwear ever again without risking my life foraging for them in abandoned stores.

@shebolt - I found the same when I started uncluttering my dresser drawers. Why did I keep all those worn out/too small/uncomfortable pairs of panties??? They're gone now and the drawer is lovely and has only comfie undies - I only have to chose the color I want for the day. :)

I did the same a month or so ago, I went through my drawer and chucked about 30 pairs of holey/unelasticated or uncomfy pairs of undies. Then I went to Marks and Spencer and bought 20 pairs of new ones. Unfortunately I bought half of them the wrong kind, the sort which dig into you and are not comfy. So when I go back there next I'm going for another 10 pairs of the right kind and will chuck the wrong ones :) I did the same with my vests at the same time, it was nice to be able to actually see what I had and be able to find things easily without ever running out. My difficulty is with tights. I don't really wear them that often, only when it's really cold and my leggings are in the wash, but I seem to have lots of different colours and should probably chuck some out.

I like to save my almost-dead undies for weekend trips. I am the queen of über-light packing so I bring enough for a couple of days and toss them as I go.
Sometimes that doesn't work because I sometimes travel more than I wear out underwear. But I like it when it does.
I have about 12 pairs of underwear at any given time.
For socks, I have socks for working out/sports and I have socks for winter. (knee-high fine wool paired with thick ankle-high knitted wool--it gets cold wlaking here) I have 4 pr of knee-highs and 6 pairs of knitted. Together they fit in my boots perfectly.
Bras are a different matter. I have lots. They get one wear each then washed. I am hard on them in general, and I take a specialty size so I stock up when I can, then wear them all out while ever-vigilant for possible replacements.

In the winter I wear black tights; in the summer I don't wear socks or tights.
Tights are easy. I never have to pair them up. I always know how they will feel and look. They tend to get holes instead of runs so I can still wear them with pants for a while. When the rips annoy me too much I throw them out, and every new year I buy 10 pairs of DKNY and throw out any with any damage.
I do have a few random footwear outliers, but they're mostly under control:
--Socks for running and hiking, a few pairs in all the same style. I've actually been wearing them lately over my tights because it's been so cold.
--2 pairs knee socks for wearing my tall boots when it's too hot for tights. These are falling apart, though, so I may just cut off legs of damaged tights for those rare occasions.
--A couple pairs of pantyhose for formal occasions. I need at least two pairs because I guarantee that if the occasion is important one pair will tear at some vital moment.
--Colored and patterned tights. Very cute, but they sit in my closet mocking me. I may start doubling them up for warmth this winter, and to just play with new looks, but if they're not pulling their weight by spring I think they'll have to go.Posted 1 year ago # -
I have lots of socks. I'm not sure I need them all, but they're not taking up an insane amount of space (they're all in one box), so I'm not too concerned. I have trouser socks (I LOVE trouser socks) in various styles and colours, mid-calf black and colourful socks, and ankle-high white sports socks. I also have various tights and fishnets (fishnets only used for dancing), one pair of uber-warm, super-long, cold-impenetrable winter socks, a pair of slipper socks, and who knows what else.
I suppose I could toss them all and go with (1) 6 pairs of white ankle-high sports socks, (2) 6 pairs of plain mid-calf black socks, (3) 6 pairs of matching trouser socks, (4) 2 pairs each of black and nude tights. But for one thing, that strikes me as a waste of money, and for another, then I wouldn't get to have socks with sledding bears on them :P

I hear you, Anita! My fun socks are my way of having a "party on my feet", that no one else knows about.

"party on my feet" - I love it! :) I have socks with snowmen, with tropical fish, with flowers, with giraffes, plus various patterns. But like Anita, I find they take up very little room, so they're not actually clutter.

Oh no, you dump 'em!? You could've made so many sock puppets!!!

LOL at "party on my feet". Fun socks are fun. The only "clutter" they add is that I have to think before I dress in the morning -- will I be taking off my shoes anywhere I wouldn't want my fun socks to be seen? But thankfully those occasions are few and far between.
Re: taking up space, I have an Expedit unit with box inserts that I use as a dresser. One of the boxes holds all the socks and other foot accessories. As long as they don't overflow (it's about 1/3 to half full right now), I don't need to worry.
