I don't have a spot to prep my meals , I wander all over the kitchen with my chopping board, knives, going back and forth picking what a need.
How do you lovely people decide where is the right place to set up and use it all the time .Thanks

I too have a few areas to choose from. Really it's about what makes the most sense. e.g. 1. I make coffee and toast in one area because it's near the tap, the kettle, the toaster, the fridge. 2. I prepare breakfast on another part of the bench which is where we also serve up dinner - because it's near the microwave and clear of dishes and chopping boards and things. Then, 3. I use the spaces next to the oven to chop things because it's next to the oven and the knives, and near the sink.
I know I'm lucky to have the choice, as I've lived many places where there is really only one place in the kitchen for preparing stuff. The only downside of lots of bench space is I have a lot of bench to clean each day:-)

@Olga I generally do all of my prep right next to the sink and after dinner is ready I divide it onto plates (and Tupperware for the next day's lunch) right next to the stove. One helpful tip: get a cutting board that is large enough to span your entire sink comfortably. Then you have an extra prep place that you can just tip backward into the sink if it starts to get full of juices from chopping fruit/meat.

I have a galley kitchen and do most of the prep on the countertop left of the sink. Knives are in a drawer right of the sink, cutting boards in a cupboard over the oven which is at the far right of that whole area.
SimpleHuman trash can is opposite the sink, between the refrigerator and the section of countertop containing my cooktop. There's just enough countertop to place things that are queued up to enter whatever pot or pan is on the cooktop.
I don't have acres of countertop but it is tile, so there is constant battle with dirty grout lines. I loathe tile countertops.

i keep my chopping board permanently on a bench next to the oven.
on the other wall are my knives.
on the same bench is my compost bowl.
i bring my vegies to the bench and everything happens there within a few feet: prep, cooking, waste control.
i think the trick is to choose a spot, then set up what you need around it, then organise yourself to bring all the food over to that spot to prep...ie carry the ingredients in, not the tools.i used to cook for a living and i am always interested in efficiency in the kichen.

I have a dishwasher with a butcher block top between the fridge and the sink that I use for prep. If something needs a cutting board (i.e. chicken) they're just beyond the sink in easy reach. My husband made a knife holder on the back of the butcher block (against the wall) so they're handy as well. I seldom prep anywhere else, though I do my baking/mixing on a different section of the counter next to the stove.

In good space planning, form follows function. If working with dry goods, ie baking, I set up away from the sink. If preparing salad, veggies, fruit, beverages, things that need a rinsing or water source I set up by the sink. Cutting board is next to sink so I can slide scraps into the sink as I go.
When working with both, I do tend to flit back & forth a bit. :)

I just moved in October, and I had to decide how to organize my kitchen. I have a vaguely u-shaped kitchen, and I'm right handed. My oven is on the top of the U, to the left, and also on the top of the U, to the right, is my sink. On the right-hand side of the leg of the U is the fridge.
So, I set up my baking center, with my stand mixer, my bread mixer, my baking trays, and my flour, sugar, and spices/seasonings etc on the left leg of the U, with the long counter top. I can turn to my right and get stuff in and out of the oven. I prep next to the fridge, on the little counter, and I can turn to my left to get to the sink. My food processor, knives, and toaster oven are on that wall or in the corner of that leg of the U.
Mixing, or food prep with other people is done on the kitchen table.

Ha, I would love to have this problem - I have a teeny galley kitchen, and I only have one space that I *can* prep in. No good if both of us want to cook at the same time...
