I was talking with my sister in New Orleans the other day and she was bemoaning the fact that her house was always such a mess. She has good friends/neighbors across the street whose house seem to always be neat, tidy and clean with no seeable effort.
So, we are wondering just what do they do that makes it so.
She says that they have a lot of wall storage, even for a collection of small glass objects. They have a drawer that has only tape and scissors in it. They do not have any real junk drawers. It seems that everything has a place to be and is in it's place.
Probably, when some piece breaks off of something they just open the appropriate drawer that holds the glue, take out the glue, fix the object and put both away. This is as opposed to what we would do with it. Which is that we would first let it sit on the coffee table or the corner of the countertop for at least a couple of weeks. We would put the broken piece in the junk drawer where we would forget what it went to. Then, we would not be able to find the glue, or it would be all dried up because someone left the top askew. So, then it would sit there for another month because we need a new tube of glue and keep forgetting to get one. Then, we lose the little part because when we were going to fix it that time and had no glue, we left the little part sitting with the object and it fell to the floor and got swept up into the garbage.
So, it seems that not only do they have good storage for things rather than having multiple junk drawers, they also seem to have good habits for dealing with stuff. And, I added that, on closer inspection, I will bet that they do not harbor little pieces of junk all over the place. It seems that those numerous little loose things are much more clutter producing than are large items that are usually fewer in number.
They have a drawer that has only the tape or the glue! How cool is that!?
You need to closely observe the habits of really neat people and add up the little things that they do to discover the way to decluttered nirvanva. My guess is that they do not litter their closets with clothes that they do not wear and have no ktichen containers with lost lids. They probably scoop the kitty litter box everyday and actually fold the laundry when it comes out of the dryer, probably right into the proper storage shelf.
I told her that she needs to take notes when she is at their house! I know people like this also and wonder at them! How do they do that thing they do? For me, I would need to just get rid of almost everything because if it is in my house it seems to be all clutter.
I am amazed at really neat people. I want to be them.
