Any other dedicated dog trainers out there? I have a nice leash rack by the front door, but it is COVERED with leashes. At least 30 leashes, collars, dog coats, etc. (For those who think I'm insane, well yes, but it's my hobby and I'm way more dedicated to it than the most rabid scrapbooker you have ever met. There's dog owners, dog lovers, and then there are the competition event folks -- we really really have dogs.)

I'm thinking of putting coat hooks in my hall closet for the less-used leashes and etc., and then dedicating one hook on the leash rack for each dog's most used equipment. Maybe also one of those plastic drawer-storage things for less-used training/holiday/special collars. The thing is, leashes need to air out a bit, and I'm thinking the hall closet would get a bit smelly.

What do other hobbyists use? Any storage container ideas that I can borrow?

While not a dog trainer by profession, I do have a leash collection from my pair of Jack Russell Terriers. The ones we use most often did end up in our hall closet. I bought the hook rack from the Container Store and installed it just inside the door on the side wall. You can see how we installed it here in the Unclutterer Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/photos/45982820@N07/4224057650/ So now, when we reach in to grab our coats, we also reach in to grab the leash/collars for that walk.

The less commonly used leads and collars went into a bag that came with some of the soft-sided crates and was intended to be hung from the crates, but its actually stored on one of the shelves now in the hall closet.

Do you have an outside area where you can store leashes, at least while they get an initial airing?

Thanks for the ideas globug. That is pretty much what I was thinking of -- my dogs and leashes are a bit bigger, so I am thinking about plain old closet hooks. Maybe four in all....?

I do have the vacuum in there also, but it would be great if I could fit in a drawer thingie like crafters use.

I'm going to Lowes today at lunch to explore the possiblities! Thanks!

Hi Laetitia,

No, there is no decent secure outside area that's also an exit to walkies or the car. I used to have the laundry room, but that's been taken over by my one year old Border Collie. He's not very reliable yet loose in the house during the day. He's a lot of dog! But oh I just had to have the super agility dog. Slightly OT: You do know that Borders aren't "just" house dogs? Just checking.... If he's not getting enough stimulation, that could be a reason for him to act out.

Yes, he's a competition dog-in-training. With the hard drive you need in a serious competition dog comes the stuff average dog owners can't stand.

He's only 14 months old! We've almost completed the agility/obedience foundation work, although obviously rock-solid focus will take more maturity. We are just starting serious jumping drills, Susan Garrett's 2x2 weave training, Rachel Sander's running A-frame contacts, focus work, obedience and rally exercises, and when we have time, I'm teaching him tricks like object names (he can identify over 30 things at the moment), dunking a basketball in a kiddy hoop, crawling, covering himself with a blanket, etc.

So, yeah, I would say he's getting more stimulation than most dogs. I did say this was my only hobby, and I'm utterly obsessed. :)

Laatste OT: he's not being overstimulated? ;-) My BC is Darth Vader when he's sheepherding, but at home he lies on his back on the sofa, waiting for belly scratches...

Going to think of something for my leashes etc.
