I am a total fantasy sci-fi freak, although I can't stand the older Doctor Who and am a new series girl all the way.
Astreja, Hitchhikers Guide is priceless! *drags thread off to the bookshelves*
I cut my teeth on Tolkien, Asimov, Heinlein, Herbert, McCaffrey (RIP) and Terry Brooks (OMG he's really not a very good writer, I know that now, but I loved Shanarra growing up). Now I read Harris, Harrison, and Hamilton, King and Martin (the HBO Game of Thrones is sublime with Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister - I actually do all the copy for a big fansite), and have developed a strong bent for Lee Child (huge kudos to King for referencing Jack Reacher in one of his recent books.)
I also read a lot of subversive type stuff (never met a banned book I didn't like!) Richard Adams, George Orwell, Daniel Keyes...
Let's see. Susan Cooper (and whoever approved the script for the Dark Is Rising movie should be SHOT), Ursula LeGuin, the list goes on and on and ON....
... no television growing up and an English teacher grandfather meant I read a LOT.
