As I've decluttered and simplified my life I'm taking a hard look at my formal china and crystal. We seldom use it, it's a pain to wash and I'm always afraid it will get chipped or broken. It was ridiculously expensive. So, I'm wondering why have it at all? My everyday china and glasses are fine and if they get broken it isn't a big deal and everyone seems more at ease when things are casual.
Anyone gotten rid of theirs and lived to tell about it?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have some crystal glasses and silver cutlery that I've had for about 10 years but hardly ever gets used. The glasses are stored in boxes at the back of a cupboard, as I don't a china cabinet yet, so they are not even on display:( I only use the items about once a year for Xmas, and then I have to polish the silverware beforehand which is a real pain. However, despite this I'm going to keep them, as I love having them out and using them. I guess I just need to make sure I use them more often, even if a couple get broken along the way. One broken glass in 10 years is not bad going so I'm ok with that!

I'm not getting any. When the current lot is finished I want to get plain, white sets so even if it is mix and match it'll all match!

Tabby, you should try cleaning your silverware the quick and easy way: baking soda, aluminium foil and water. It actually works.

Thanks Candy, I'm going to try that, maybe then I'll use the silverware more often! I hate cleaning it the old way ;(

i clean my silver with baking or washing soda/boiling water/al foil.
it really does work like a dream....fast and perfect.
so we use...and enjoy... our silver every day.
if i had to hand polish it all, i'd give it away very quickly.
but this is just a bath for the silver with no elbow grease at all.
o and it works beautifully on jewellery too.Posted 2 years ago # -
My china/crystal/silver are the few things that I will keep from elderly/passed relatives. We have a large home and host most of the family gatherings, so they get lots of use. I have a beautiful dining set and china cabinet (Craig's list) that I can keep most of it in. If i didn't keep it - I'd have to go out and buy enough to serve 32 people. The bonus is, I really like most of it and I really enjoy setting a pretty table (well, usually 3 or 4 tables). I've gotta remember that baking soda trick for next time.

I got rid of a lot of my crystal but have enough to mix and match for entertaining. We use it all the time, I'd rather drink juice out of a crystal stem than a juice glass! I've got three regular glasses as I prefer the crystal. My china is white and plain, I mix and match with every day stoneware and also use it on a regular basis. My feeling is that if you have it, enjoy and use it!

Thanks for all the comments. I think I have decided to let the crystal and china go. It just doesn't fit into my vision of a simple life. I have nice everyday china and glasses that we enjoy and a few small vintage glasses for my grandchildren. All the plastic stuff is already gone except for one large plastic cup my DH takes outside.
We use our sterling silverware everyday.Posted 2 years ago #
