Family room trash and recycling suggestion?

Hi - Hoping for some suggestions from the forum.

We have an old 1917 house and did a sunroom remodel years ago to create a family room. With two daughters, 7 1/2 and 6-years old, we live there basically. Problem is that it's far from the kitchen were we keep recycling bins and far from any trash can. So stuff accumulates there (oh, we should recycle this read magazine or a coloring book page. Oh, I'll grab that wrapper and bring to the kitchen in a little bit.)

I was looking for suggestions on a nice looking way to solve this. I was thinking something basketlike, I guess. I don't want unsightly trash cans (even silver Simple Human are sort of a bad fit with a traditional room) or bags hanging around.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help?

You could even make one like the ones above. Get some neat old pictures or wallpaper and get your daughters to help you decoupage them on a plain trash receptacle. That would be a fun way to do it!

Hi there! Thanks for the suggestions -

I actually really like the first one, the wicker one b/c I was trying to stay away from a "fancy" open option that just sort of draws attention with a really pretty trash can to the bag of open trash being stored in the room! Don't get me wrong, I love the second set and would like something like that to improve my bedroom or for my girls, but the family room is supposed to be "hidden" trash if you know what I mean.

I think the first one might work - and I actually think that it's genius that even though it uses a kitchen bag, because of the color (beige) and way it loops around the handle (so it doesn't have to ring the whole trash can), it looks pretty subtle.

I suppose I'm dreaming to hope I'd find one that had something like a swing lid (you know the angled kind) and was similar in look. I have or know were I can get baskets with lids, but I think lifting up and throwing away and then replacing lid just isn't going to happen with a 6 and 7 1/2 yr old (much less my husband!) But, a swing situation would keep it out of sight but be easy.

I've got the first suggestion though at the top of my list right now - thanks!

Also wondering about this one - not a swing lid, but at least it's attached. Uses a paper bag but I have clear plastic for trash, could use paper for recycling. I have to get out a tape measure - I think it looks bigger in the picture than it is in real life.

I think a lidded hamper would work for recyclables that wouldn't get the bags really gunky (and if they do get gross, they can be washed... they're laundry hampers after all). A lot of hampers look really nice on the outside.

I was wondering about a split hamper or split recycling piece myself. There is one on Basketlady.com though it's not my fav wicker colors. It is lined though to be recycling so not cloth. Theirs is designed to split recycling between cans and paper but here in Baltimore we have all-in-one recycling. - all is taken at the same time. So I could use one half for trash and one half for recycling. It would be one piece then instead of two.

Another idea is a vegetable bin (lots out there, here's an example: http://shop.visiondecor.com/weathered-sage-finish-solid-pine-wood-vegetable-bin-tm-61893sag.html or http://www.wards.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=50012 ). My mom uses an antique flour bin (like this but with only one large bin) for a laundry hamper. It actually sits out in the hallway with a lamp on it and looks like a beautiful piece of furniture. No one would ever know dirty socks are inside! :)

Another good suggestion - thanks! I think what I need to do is figure out where I'm going to put whatever item and measure available space. Part of the idea was to sort of "hide" it between a coffee table and wall which is beside a couch (so it's sort of horizontally wedged in there, BUT some of these are looking so nice that I'm now thinking I could find a more "public" place for it.

I sure will! Now I have so many options that I want to really think through it. I did show my husband the picture of the very first BagLady.com one - the simple wicker open trash can - and he like it, especially because it uses regular grocery bags. He's a very practical man! I wouldn't want to over think it and then get something that doesn't actually conveniently hold bags for things, you know. ;-)
