I agree it's what you make it. I have a facebook. I read a handful of RL friends, and a handful of family members. Oh, and I play Bejeweled every once in a while. ;)

I have a Myspace account that I never check, so it's useless. I use twitter sometimes. I check it every day, but don't post every day. I also have and love facebook. I am a writer and trying to get a book published, so part of why I use it (and twitter, and my blog) is to begin to get my name out there, and the fact that I write, so when I do get a publishing deal, people will already know, and can then tell other people. It isn't the main way I keep in touch with people though. I am very careful about everything I post anywhere online. I do the "would I want my parents/boss/future theoretical children/etc to read this?" check. If the answer is no, or I don't know, I don't post it.
I definitely use lists in facebook, so I only see updates from people I really want to see updates from. I have considered creating a new account for just my closest friends, but A) I don't want to keep up with 2 accounts and B) I wouldn't want to delete the current one for the aforementioned reason of getting my author profile in the world. So I filter my newsfeed, hide all game notifications, don't play any games.
I don't keep up with the news. I find it extremely depressing. I get tired of reading headlines about "litter of puppies found in dumpster" or "man beats girlfriend" or whatever. I figure if something happens that I truly need to know about, I'll hear about it at work, or on twitter/facebook. So it is my greatly dumbed down news source as well.

I've also given up on Facebook. I opened an account a couple of years ago, went through a round of finding everybody I could, then slowly realized that their lives and my life had diverged so drastically since high school (class of '95) that there was really no point. The final straw came when a distant relative (via the father I never knew) drunk messaged me about her failed marriage. That was it. Haven't looked back, just don't need it.
That said I agree 100% with everyone who's said that it's what you make it. I know plenty of people who schedule all of their social events via FB, to the exclusion of any other media, and that works for them. I know others who still give me a funny look when I say Facebook...so there you go.

how do you filter the newsfeed, i've been trying to figure that out. i just joined facebook and will probably just get rid of myspace all together if i can figure out how to get rid of all the useless updates on the news feed for games and crap.

Yes - it is what you make it. For me, it works best this way: On all the social networking websites I chose the settings where they will email me whenever someone wants to contact me by message, or writes on my wall (but not whenever someone updates their status). I check emails everyday anyway, so this way I get notified if something "important" happens and can choose to act on it :o)
