I am a person who has turned the patio heat lamp on for "my" hummingbirds when it got down into the 40s (F), so I would probably have had those chickens in my kitchen! LOL
Stay warm y'all!

Aww, chacha, that is too cute! I can see the hummingbirds gathering on your patio, and spreading the word about the nice warm patio among their friends :)
Belgrade, Serbia - at least that is where the article that went with the pictures had in it's tag line.
@ candy, Here in usually sunny Los Angeles a very dumb Anna's hummingbird has decided that right before our coldest wettest season is the perfect time to build her nest in my potted ficus tree. This is a serial occurrence ... I don't know if it's the same bird, but if not then they are certainly passing the word!
Cute. Stupid hummingbird, but cute. :)
I hadn't even thought about what would happen to livestock and pets. Poor animals
:( I am glad to hear that our European contingent seems okay. Sorry to hear about the windburn, ninakk.
I lived in an area for a while where it could get as low as -60F on extreme occasions. We had outdoor chickens and when it was going to get pretty bad we put hay bales around the coop to insulate, and make sure their water doesn't freeze! I know someone who swore 2 spoons of olive oil in the water bowl kept it at least mostly free of ice, but never tried it
I can't conceive the cold you are all facing. Those pictures were astonishing. Snow always seems slightly romantic to me in Australia. People pay a lot of money to go up to the mountains to ski the snowfields in winter, but it never gets that cold. It is all about fun. I had not thought about the extent it could interfere with everyday life. Stay safe and cosy all northern hemisphere dwellers. Try not to go stir crazy inside. Maybe stay home and declutter that junk drawer :-)
Hansi, our trains stop in the extreme heat when the tracks buckle!
The air had a tinge of spring in it today, despite a light flurry or two of snow.
Last night it started snowing for a bit, DH called me to come look out the window and suddenly there was thunder and lightning almost simultaneously. Very cool. I've seen this here before (snow thunderstorms) but I believe it's quite unusual. I used to have a class of meteorologists and they told me it was a new phenomenon.
Anyone else have experienced this?
It's -6°C right now in south Germany, and everyone is saying it's so warm. We had -26°C last week! In the houses it's ok because they are usually really well isolated, but I couldn't help thinking of the homeless.
@Jackthetiger It can be beautiful, but also hard: like when your fingers start really hurting after 60 seconds without gloves. Last week my nose started hurting, and my toes were freezing even in my shoes. You basically try to run from one building to another, but if you have the bad luck of having to wait on a bus stop, it really sucks.
It's mild and beautifully sunny here on the south coast of Britain, really Spring like, hopefully it'll be coming you way soon, eternalvoyageur!
@ djk, never witnessed (or heard of ) snow thunderstorms, sounds interesting to watch!
Today I took a risk, and put away my winter boots. How's that for the triumph of hope over experience?
I think I'll wait before getting my winter coat dry-cleaned for storage; that might be pushing my karma too far
