The "where are you from thread" had an awful lot of posts from our European buddies. With the recent winter weather disasters, I thought I'd set up a short thread for you to check in and let the rest of us unclutterers know how you are, and how you're dealing with the snow. Be safe!

Irulan, that is very thoughtful of you. I'm fine, actually we've had really bad weather here the past 2 winters, but this sudden cold was rather unexpected. I live in the center of Stockholm so I'm fine, but I know that people in other places in Sweden suffer more.

South of Sweden everything is just fine, thanks for asking. Snow is a nice thing most Swedes are used to. Walking, driving, working nothing stops for snow (just the trains but they never work during the winter because they are not constructed for out climate).

We' ve got a cold snap in Vienna but the predicted snow hasn't arrived. Heating problems at the Fernwärme in Salzburg though. Very cold--and no heat in many households.

It was so cold the past few days that I didn't even want to go outside and the roads have been variously pleasant to drive. According to the meteorological institute, it's supposedly warming up closer to freezing point, around 7-8 minus degrees, so that's more bearable. Some of you may have read my comment re:getting skin burns on my cheek as a kid, and while walking to parents' place on Saturday evening, I could feel the cheeks react really badly and the one with the scar wasn't happy at all.
So 7-8 minus sounds a lot better; when going to Ikea the car thermometer had shown minus 19. A day later, luckily not during my driving session, it looked like this:

Well, the snow arrived in Vienna... there is a LOT of snow as i write, and it will probably cause havoc tomorrow if it continues, as they promised/threatened it would.
In Slowakia it is even worse...it is so difficult to get anywhere. The wind is terrific and there are huge drifts of snow everywhere.Posted 3 months ago # -
@ninakk I'm so sorry about your cheeks. While home in Ireland two Xmases ago we encountered extreme weather (worst on record since 1950s). Having lived in a warm climate for the last many years and also having rosecea my cheeks freaked out. It took months of care to heal them. stay warm!

brrrr, stay warm all of you!

It's actually comparatively mild here in the south-west of England, no snow that's laid, just some drizzly rain every now and then. Although, it's worse with drifting snow where my mother lives in the south-east.

o my, that ice is unreal!

wow, really surreal pictures. this morning it was minus 16 degree celsius over here, brrrrr. but we don´t have snow or ice, it´s just cold. we had a problem with our central heating system at the weekend, that wasn´t funny, but thankfully the HVAC service provider came within 30 minutes.

Forecast is for -8 here tonight (London), which is exceptional. I'm worried about my poor chickens.

Thank you for asking. While it is very cold here in Switzerland I think we are better prepared for it then some other countries that never have/had this kind of cold and/or snow. It's around -10 to -14C and I'm glad I don't live in any of the areas that got up to -30C i think it was.
I was walking home yesterday in the freezing cold with a friend and she remarked how surreal it is that all the shops already have the spring collections in the windows. Somehow buying a spring dress doesn't feel right when you are adding layer upon layer of clothes not to freeze too much. If always wondered about this early change of season in retail.BTW: i think those pics were taken in Geneva the french part of Switzerland.

@ninakk: i know you like weleda-product- have you tried the "coldcream"? it´s made to protect skin when it is very cold, maybe it could help you.

That ice is frightening!

Mimi, I haven't seen it yet, but I'll look into it, thanks!

Charity, I had chickens that did quite well at below zero F. I used to give them warm water to drink, and of course plenty of bedding and a place out of the wind.

another suggestion for chickens, if you're worried (it's commonly down to -30 C here at night a few times during the winter) - if their roosts are as wide as their feet, they sit on their toes & keep them warmer. But generally they're fine. There were 100% outdoor chickens in our neighborhood for several winters that seemed perfectly healthy.

Only -2C here(Hampshire, but by the coast so warmer than inland) at the moment but I felt a lot colder on the way home from work than I did last week in Austria when it was -18 in the village and -26 up the mountain.
All to do with appropriate clothing, relative wind chill and the amount of moisture in the air.
Charity, will you need to bring in your chickens for a cuddle?Posted 3 months ago #
