Let's give our other ATAD thread a rest and start fresh. Here's a chance to recommit to ATAD through the holidays and on up to starting the new year lighter!

Woo hoo! We have a new thread!
Just a brief explanation in case we have any newbies encountering this thread. ATAD= A Thing A Day. The basic idea is to get rid of one thing every day. People generally post what they got rid of. That's the general idea...but there's lots of "coloring outside the lines" :), i.e., post as frequently and with as many things as you like. What did you get rid of today?

Thanks both :)

TRASH: The huge plastic wrapping that encased my new mattress, which I forgot I'd stuffed under the bed over a year ago, not knowing what else to do with it. I didn't want to just heave it into landfill back then, and I don't want to do that now either, but what else could I do? Loathsome stuff, plastic.

Ooooh - fantastic! I was always intimidated by the length of the other ATAD thread, but I've been uncluttering at that rate (or faster - on the weekends I often get rid of a lot). I'm also getting closer and closer to what I would consider a "minimalist" home and have some anxieties about whether I am going too fast or still not fast enough. Anyway, the idea of taking things slow but steady sounds perfect.
11/16/11 - A black sash that came with a sweater. I'd uncluttered the sweater long ago, but thought the sash could be useful as a belt (I've never used it).

Got through 50% of a file drawer and probably 25% of it went into the recycle bin. I'll tackle the remainder tomorrow.
Thanks for this new thread. It's just what I need!

OUT:
a whole bunch of plastic containers....with proper lids.
my mother is checking them first to see if she wants any of them and the rest are off for donation.STOPPED AT THE DOOR:
ancient linen tablecloths....my great grandmother's, in fact.
in perfect condition, but wrong size for my tables, and we are really more placemat people.Posted 6 months ago # -
sleepykitten, I have so many things like your sash. Purses, bookbags and luggage seems to come with lots of spare straps. Electronics come with wires or plugs that I don't need. Grocery store receipts come with coupons I don't want. And I don't even want to think about all of the junk DNA taking up space in my cells.... :-)

Task uncluttered: Closed the deal on my new car. Am picking it up tomorrow.
Also uncluttered the old car, which is being surrendered to the licensing agency for write-off purposes. I emptied the trunk (through the fold-down back seat, because the trunk lid is crunched in and may never open again), the door pockets and the glove compartment... And now have a formidable collection of light-weight gloves, pens, pencils and other small items that were stowed away in the car by Justin Case.

Yesterday I sold a dulcimer on Craigslist, so that's out. Some cash in!
Unfortunately, I listed maybe 8 other items on Craigslist and haven't gotten any other calls.
Also, we are using up all the food in our freezer because the door was cracked open and things got frosty. Our freezer is really not very big, we have committed ourselves to keeping it "semi-full" so we don't have this problem again.Posted 6 months ago # -
OK, so I uncluttered some anger, and blogged about it. http://www.rutheverhart.com/blog

Deb, those scientist are junk scientists. It will be figured it out someday. :)
I'm getting the urge to purge again.
Got rid of 3 pairs of pants today. Even though they fit now, they are not attractive. I think I heard my closet let out a sigh of relief.

I will be allowing our 5 month old kitten to do all of the un-cluttering this year...so far we have:
1. A lamp that she pulled down while falling out of the living room window...broke it.
2. 6 boxes of tissues that she very carefully distributed throughout the house...will not be needing these!
3. One buckwheat-hull pillow that she sucked a hole in and dragged around the house...buckwheat-hulls EVERYWHERE!
4. All coasters that HAD cork in them...shredded them with her claws and then gave them to the dog to finish off.
5. 3 Cat collars...she snapped them off and hid them...still haven't found them...no more cat collars!
6. An assortment of socks...took them, chewed on them, now they are too hole-y...in the trash they go!
7. One ream of copy paper...punched holes in all sheets and then gnawed the corner off...will recycle what's left
8. A pair of hubby's tennis shoes...she put a dead mouse in one and it sat for a few days until discovered...couldn't get the
smell out (not that they smelled so great to begin with) so out they go!
9. One corded phone...she keeps taking it off the hook so the phone always rings busy...not good for business...it's gone! :)Does this EVER end!? :)

OMG Artgal. We have been threatening to get a kitten to amuse our 3year old cat (she's totally bored and winter has just begun), but you've convinced me of the error of my thinking! I do lovekittens though. She'll be sedate soon enough.

Lol ArtGal, it will end before you know it, shortly after your house is totally destroyed :) You've reminded me why I refuse to get a kitten for at least a few years after our cats die...
3 old jars of jam out from the larder. A bunch of weeds at the allotment yesterday, and half a pack of broad beans planted. More to go in shortly, along with some tulips I bought the other day. White with pink bits, my favourite type!Posted 6 months ago # -
@ArtGal: Haha, going through the same thing here with two cats that used to be homeless. Not great when they break things I actually need/want but they really helped me unpack after my move as everything that was left on the floor got completely shredded. :P
Todays out: A perfume/soap set I will never use. Had it for ages... Traded it with someone from this freecycle group I'm in for cocoa powder. If only I had remembered to buy milk...
Photographed and posted a whole heap of small things on the freecycle group that will hopefully be out tomorrow. I'm highly excited about this very nice, very long and VERY bulky cardigan that I never use. It will free up some very much needed space in my closet. And the girl is gifting it to her mom who is always cold which makes it easier to give up. So sweet. :)

ArtGal: I'm with lottie: this is making me feel easier about our decision not to adopt again after these three go! (But kittens are cute!)
OUT: the rusted-out composter, finally! Someone was collecting several wrecked steel filing cabinets from DS's old school; I asked if he could take the composter as well, and DS and I hauled it out of the back garden and down the alley to him. It's gone! Yay!
