I have a flashlight and a first aid kit in a dresser near the entrance door... Every now and then I try to remember to check the batteries in the flashlight. :)

    *laughing myself silly*

Some of you may remember that I've been trying to encourage my DH to start uncluttering in preparation for our move next year; one of the boxes contains his amateur radio gear. We've lived here for nearly 10 years, and for all that time it has sat in its box in the basement.

Yesterday (in his role as webmaster for our community council; I'm the secretary) he received an e-mail from the Mayor's office coordinator for neighborhood councils, asking if he knew anyone in our neighborhood with an amateur radio license who would be willing to serve as an information center in an emergency.

So this weekend, we'll be having a neighbor come over and help us put the antenna on the roof, and making space for the equipment in the computer room. Well, I wanted it out of the basement! :-)

I live in Alaska, so both earthquakes and horrible, nasty, cold, snow and winter darkness. :) We heat with natural gas and wood, and cook with gas plus we have a propane grill. We live about 3 miles from the nearest "city," pop 6,000, but we live on a stretch of road about 10 miles long between two rivers. One direction leads to town, the other to a 7-10 winding road back to the main highway, and bypasses several other bridges. On it we can get to Anchorage, about a further 35 miles. In an earthquake we'd likely be cut off if one or both bridges failed. While we have earthquakes we haven't had a really bad one since 1964. The bridge to the highway was flooded out about 15 years ago, but we could still get to town, though the people on the other side had to go around about 40 miles.

Winter with the snow is the time we lose power most. We can keep warm with our wood stove, and cook on our gas stove. We have lots of candles and flashlights. We keep extra water, and canned goods (much of which we recycle into camping food in the summer). If we were without power for a long time we could simply move the frozen stuff outdoors! We do have a large chest freezer which this time of year is fairly full with home grown veggies and berries, and salmon my husband has caught. Many people here have generators as they are pretty well dependent on electricity. As long as we have propane (for an extra free standing heater), wood, and batteries/candles, we do fine.

I also keep an emergency kit in my car and supplement it with winter survival stuff in the winter.

oh yes, nice thread... i think i would be lost after 2 days of an emergency.

we don´t have any extreme temperatures over here, no cyclones, nothing. and the region that i live in is defined by urban sprawl, i.e. houses and supermarkets everywhere. i have food for maybe 2 or 5 days, depending on my shopping mood... and that´s it.

but i have a great dane as a living alarm system in case that anybody wants to enter my house without my permission!
