I'm wondering how I help to identify my cable clutter - not a need/not need, but so I can properly freecycle it or ebay it - IS ebay even worth the effort?

It probably depends on the type of cable you want to get rid of. Scart? Probably not. HDMI? Probably. I'm not sure whether you're asking for help on solving some problem too?

We're in the process of clearing out cable clutter - I say process because I'm sure I'll find more sooner or later!
Firstly, we plugged everything in that uses detachable cables - 2 PCs, a laptop, TV, DVD, Freeview box and Wii. Then I got all the chargers and put them with their gadgets. Then I collected all the rest of them up and we went through them together, identifying what was what etc.
After getting rid of things that had attached to stuff we don't own anymore, there was very little left. We kept 2 kettle leads (the power leads, not actual leads for our kettle!) and freecycled the other 7.
Ebay isn't really worth it tbh, they're so cheap to start with it's unlikely to be worth your time. Generic leads will go well on freecycle, but 'charger for Nokia 3210' maybe not so much - most recycling centres have bins for electricals though.
Good luck, don't let the leads take over!!

Most of your cables are unlikely to be worth much. Even the $50-a-pop Monster audio cables are just overpriced at retail. If you still have some generic, neatly stored cables like ethernet or possibly coax, you might see if the computer department at a local school can use it. Most likely, I'd just toss em.
I formerly had enough extra cables and PC parts in my house to build 3 or 4 decent gaming PCs at any given time. Now that I've tossed what I wasn't actually using and couldn't recycle or resell, the very few extra cables that aren't in use at any given time fit in a small box.

Sometimes these have a good response on freecycle. In my group, people are always looking for things like cell phone chargers, either to have one to keep in a second location (like work and home) or because they lost one.

Once I had all my stuff hooked up, I put all the cables not in use in a box and donated it to goodwill. They wouldn't have been worth much anyway, and I figure if someone else can use them, that's a very easy way to get rid of my clutter.
I only accidentally got rid of 1 power cord I needed (for the Tivo I can't use anymore, since it's not compatible with Uverse), but luckily found a replacement for only $8 so I can sell the Tivo.
