I have been trying harder since I've got more energy after my kidney and pancreas transplant 2 years ago. (See, I REALLY recycle!) I think we need more ways to "encourage" recycling, the same way we "discouraged" highway littering by putting bottle deposits on pop and beer bottles. Once it started to make a significant financial impact, people started recycling those fast enough. There's a local area (not mine, unfortunately) that gives you credit for every full recycle bin - and charges by weight for anything that isn't in a recycle bin. Now that's an incentive! You work at it, you could have free trash removal.
I was loading my recycling into my car in front of a non-environmentally aware neighbor, who wondered why I bothered when the recycle center is 45 minutes away and the dumpster is next to the building. I'm thinking of putting my flippant response on a T-shirt.
"I don't recycle to save the planet. I just like feeling morally superior."
Whatever gets the job done!
